Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is pushing back against calls to slow down AI development, arguing that the industry does not need new laws or additional AI-specific regulations to address safety concerns. Speaking at Salesforce’s Dreamforce conference, Huang said AI safety is primarily an engineering challenge and that existing laws, human oversight and market forces can help prevent unsafe products from being released.

Huang also rejected the idea that companies must choose between rapid AI development and safety. His message was clear: “Run as fast as you can” — while taking a step back whenever a product or company appears to be getting out of control. His comments come as major AI developers and industry leaders debate how quickly artificial intelligence should advance and how safety should be managed.

00:00To say it, I was the first CEO to come out, not in the software industry, to say the end
00:06of software is nonsense.
00:08This is going to be a layer on top of software.
00:11This was a layer on top of software.
00:14This new layer on top of software is going to be agentic.
00:16It's going to make you use the software so much better.
00:20And so that's the first idea.
00:22The second idea is AI is going to destroy jobs.
00:27That's also completely nonsense.
00:28These models, you've had some time to think about what everybody is saying and kind of bring it all down
00:34to us and explain, you know, how do you see that?
00:37Well, safety is paramount.
00:39In a lot of ways, it's job one.
00:42However, safety is an engineering problem.
00:45We're developing software after all.
00:47We're developing computing systems after all.
00:48It's a complicated computing system, but it's ultimately a computing system.
00:52And so the first thing is to make sure that we create the test environments for testing these complex systems.
01:00And those test environments have to be built in a good way, built in a safe way.
01:04And then the second thing is we have to test these products.
01:07If we're not confident about the safety of the products, like all companies, like you and I, any, any, all
01:15the companies here, if you build a product or a service and you're not confident in its functionality, capability or
01:22safety, then don't release it.
01:24And so that's a very obvious thing to do.
01:27You pace yourself until you are confident you're releasing something that the market would appreciate.
01:33The market forces are already there.
01:35We don't need any new laws.
01:36We don't need new regulations.
01:38We just need companies to decide that when it's, you know, run as fast as they can.
01:45I think innovation speed and safe products are not, it's a false choice.
01:51You could definitely have both at the same time.
01:53So run as fast as you can.
01:55But if you feel at any given point in time the company's out of control or the product's not going
02:00to be safe, you know, take a pause and make sure you get it right.
02:03Give us your state of the AI industry and pacing and where your mind is right now.
02:09Yeah, I think it's maybe easiest to explain it by an analogy.
02:13So let's say you're running a car company and another car company, not yours, they have some kind of safety
02:19incident, right?
02:20Something goes wrong with the brakes, you know, something with the manufacturing.
02:24Now, you believe you have the best safety record in the industry.
02:28What do you do?
02:28How do you approach it?
02:29Obviously, it's very tempting to attack your competitor and say, these guys are unsafe, we're safe.
02:34But I think the more responsible way to respond to it is to say, hey, first of all, let's look
02:41at our own record, right?
02:42We may not have had this big high profile incident, but I'm sure we're not perfect.
02:46Let's look at everything and we can always be better.
02:48Let's make our practices better.
02:51Let's recommit to transparency.
02:53Let's invest more in safety.
02:55Then let's organize the rest of the industry and say, what can we do to set standards for everyone?
03:00What can we do to make everyone's standards better?
03:03And then finally, there should be an international component to it.
03:06And that's essentially the three-step plan that I laid out in the essay, the first of which we committed
03:13to and the others of which we're going to have a dialogue with the rest of the industry about.
03:18And I think that's the way to lead the industry forward, to set an example, to say that everyone can
03:25always be better.
