We at The Straits Times put four popular models to the test in the real-world. We evaluate the self-parking systems of the Avatr 07, GAC E9, Xpeng G6, and the Toyota BZ4X.

We take these cars through two essential parking scenarios: Reverse parking and Parallel parking. Does the technology live up to the hype or should you just park it yourself.

00:00Today we're going to test the self-parking capabilities of four cars.
00:07We are going to see how well they do on two parking tests,
00:10reverse parking and parallel parking.
00:12I'm here with an expert on all things automotive, Mr Christopher Tan.
00:16So Chris, what is your experience with self-parking cars?
00:19First one I tried was more than 20 years ago.
00:22It was a Toyota.
00:23But ever since then, I've not really put them to the test.
00:28Okay, so what do you look out for when it comes to self-parking cars?
00:30As for most things, ease of use.
00:32Whether it's complicated, whether I have to touch a lot of buttons and widgets.
00:36When a car is maneuvering, whether I feel comfortable and confident.
00:39So before it gets too hot, let's go up to the rooftop and we'll test these cars out.
00:45Chris, can you walk us through the process for Avatar 7?
00:47It's quite simple. You just press the parking icon here.
00:50It sees the space here.
00:52You can choose whether you want to go head in or tail first.
00:55We're also going to test how long it will take.
01:06Press this space.
01:07We press start parking.
01:20Select the space.
01:22And then, start auto-park.
01:33As usual, we press the parking icon, then select the space, and we press start.
01:49So all four cars did well in reverse parking, with no adjustments needed after the cars
01:53completed their moves.
01:54While it's not a race, the Toyota BZ4X was the fastest, taking just 27 seconds to park.
02:01And now the parallel parking.
02:02We gave about 6 metres of space between the front and the back of two cars.
02:07Now this is an unusual but possible parking scenario, there are no lot markings on the
02:11ground and we do not have a kerb, so we gave the cars a few tries to park.
02:16So we set up the cars to mimic a parallel parking situation in Singapore, but I've heard that
02:19parallel parking is the hardest, so you'll see how the cars fare.
02:24As before, we press the parking icon, we will recognise this part.
02:32Is it the custom parking space?
02:35Perhaps.
02:36Ah, then you need to draw it, right?
02:40Start parking.
02:52We have to do some customisation.
02:56Because the car did not recognise the space, once we've done that, we auto-park.
03:23While the cars generally aced the first test, it was a different story for parallel parking.
03:28No lot markings on the floor meant the cars found it challenging.
03:33Two of the cars needed Chris to input where he wanted the car to be parked.
03:37Nevertheless, three of the cars were still able to park inside the given space.
03:42Unfortunately, the GAC E9 suffered a glitch and could not complete the task on the day.
03:49Okay, so Chris, we have tried all the cars.
03:51So what's your verdict?
03:52Which one is your favourite?
03:53For perpendicular parking, all of them parked fairly well.
03:57For parallel parking, that was a bit more of a challenge.
04:00I think out of four, I think the Avatar probably felt the best.
04:03But even then, it had some hesitation.
04:07Falling closely behind is the Toyota BZ4 rack.
04:11I was able to recognise the space even though there were no markings.
04:15I like the fact that it's self-signaled so that drivers behind know what you're doing.
04:20And there you have it.
04:21Our pick for the car with the best self-parking capability out of four cars is the Avatar 07.
