00:05instrumental part in introducing the protect college sports act a bipartisan piece of legislation
00:11along with democratic senator maria cantwell senator cruz is going to be a news conference
00:16on monday we hope perhaps there will be a vote to decide this in the coming days
00:20from your perspective why is it important for the overall health and the future of college sports
00:25for this legislation to pass well look as you know well college sports is an amazing institution
00:32it has been an avenue for opportunities for literally millions of young men and young women
00:38to be able to get an education be able to get a future and and right now college sports is
00:45in
00:45chaos the current situation is nuts you you look at between lane kiffin down in louisiana trying to
00:52bring nfl players back into college sports or between up and loving brendan soresby and litigation
00:59over whether someone who is gambling on his own game should be allowed to play what we have right
01:05now is chaos there are no rules and the situation with the transfer portal where kids go and transfer
01:14two three four five times it's terrible for the game it's terrible for the players it's terrible for
01:20the schools and it's terrible for the fans and so the reason congress is acting is because congress
01:26created this problem it was the federal antitrust laws that were used to bring the lawsuits that struck
01:33down all the rules and so the protect college sports act is bipartisan legislation that's very simple
01:40it brings order to chaos it protects the students protects the students ability to be compensated
01:47to receive name image and likeness compensation i think that's only fair it's only right they're producing
01:52enormous value and enormous skill but it also puts reasonable rules in place so for example every
02:01player gets one free trade not three five one trip it puts eligibility rule that every player has five
02:10years of eligibility not six seven eight five but it puts a hard end on that at age 24. it

02:18the schools compete and it also slows down what we got right now at least is a spiral of cost
02:26that is bankrupting almost every college program in the country most college athletic programs i mean
02:33they're losing tens of millions of dollars and as a result they're canceling women's programs they're
02:40canceling non-revenue sports they're canceling olympic sports if we don't act within three to five years
02:48we're going to see 40 to 50 schools that have competitive football programs and everyone else goes
02:55on that would be a tragedy and so i think the reason i congress is willing to act is because

03:01sports is too precious we've got to make sure this remains an avenue for opportunity for millions of
03:09kids and we got to make sure it it remains not just football but also all of women's sports all
03:15all of all of the non-revenue sports all of the olympic sports this bill's designed to do all
