How baseball helped restore normalcy and unite the country after the September 11 attacks.
Transcript
00:07Today, we remember the bravery of 343 members of this great department who make a supreme
00:16sacrifice that others could be saved.
00:21Every year 9-11 we get together and we remember.
00:28We honor and we never forget, parade rest at ease.
00:3925 years later, it's still in the forefront of my mind, 25 years but it always feels like
00:48it just happened.
00:50It feels like yesterday right now.
00:53The worst thing that happened to this country then brought out the best in the country and
00:57I think you saw that in ballparks.
01:00I don't know about you, but as for me, the question has already been answered.
01:07Should we be here?
01:10Yes.
01:13I remember like, we're going to play baseball.
01:17And now when I look back and here we are 25 years later, it's like, yeah.
01:23Shea Stadium has something to smile about.
01:27Baseball brought comfort and it was a vehicle to get back to life as we knew it, as heavy
01:34as our hearts were.
01:36The chills that I had, just seeing people out there enjoying the game made a difference
01:42for the guys on the field.
01:43And you needed something to feel good again and baseball was the first thing.
01:48We needed the escape, we needed the diversion, we needed the games.
01:52We're going to get back, we're going to dust ourselves off and in September we played baseball
01:57and that's what we did.
01:58I will never be part of a more patriotic experience in my life.
02:04We needed our leader to be there, he was there.
02:07He gives me goosebumps right now, sitting there watching it.
02:10All for one, one for all.
02:12This is our sport, this is our pastime.
02:14I think what baseball did at the time, we put a small band-aid on a big wolf.
