00:00with LFC Women Manager, Head Coach Gareth Peeler,
00:07head of Sunday's WSL Flash with Cockney Hotspur at St Helens.
00:12We're all on Zoom today, so we'll kick off there.
00:16And as usual, we'll go to Ian Kennedy, Radio Merseyside.
00:19Ian?
00:20Thank you. Hi, Gareth.
00:22Hi, Ian.
00:22Just first of all, did everyone come through OK last week?
00:26How are you looking squad-wise?
00:29Yeah, pretty much everyone came through OK.
00:31A few little niggles here and there.
00:33I think it was the first time we had a few players that had played 90 minutes.
00:37So I think that was good.
00:41I think we always looked previously in the pre-season
00:43to get as many 90 minutes under our belts as possible,
00:46but felt like we got some really good volume in training.
00:50So not necessarily gaining that, but we got good volume in training
00:54and used the games in a way where we could build up to that 90 minutes.
00:58So it was good.
00:59And fortunately, we were in a good position to be able to look after key players
01:04who probably use more energy in 60 minutes than other players would.
01:09So, yeah, all good.
01:12And then on top of that, Maisie Truman will be back closer to the squad this weekend
01:17and also Roman Haag.
01:20And it was obviously an excellent win away from home as well.
01:23And when you think how long it took the club to get their first win last season,
01:27obvious thing, obviously, but how important was it just to get off the mark straight away?
01:32Yeah, of course it is.
01:33I mean, I always look at the performance and, you know,
01:35the great thing about the weekend was we feel we can play better.
01:39We felt we upped it in the second half and put them under a lot of pressure.
01:42But, yeah, I think points on the board are key.
01:45I think nothing's a given in the WSL,
01:48although people probably would have looked at that game
01:51and thought it's three points for Liverpool.
01:54We've still got to go and earn it.
01:55I think signs have been good in pre-season.
01:57I think that it was a professional job from the girls.
02:02And, of course, we've been waiting for this moment
02:05because pre-season has felt long, but also felt good.
02:08And we really got to that Charlton game.
02:11And obviously, maybe the week or week before that,
02:14we felt really ready to start the season.
02:15So I think the girls were really champing it a bit
02:18to go and show what they're capable of doing.
02:20And they did a really good job.
02:21Yeah, and a lot of positives as well, I'm sure.
02:24Not least Vivian Enderman getting a goal on debut as well.
02:26How pleased were you with her performance?
02:29Yeah, Viv's an exciting player.
02:31She gives a lot to the team.
02:32I think that, yeah, she's playing for a team
02:35where she's able to go and express herself
02:37and cause problems for teams.
02:39I think that her scoring will give her a lot of confidence.
02:43I think that, yeah, she makes it really difficult
02:47for defences when she's in that type of moment
02:50because she's not always successful in her actions.
02:55But, you know, she's very, very determined
02:57in trying to turn everything into a positive.
03:02So, yeah, we're really pleased that we've got her on board.
03:05We had a really good pre-season with her.
03:08She gets what we're trying to do.
03:09And we also understand what she will bring to the team.
03:12And I think that was just an early glimpse
03:14of what she can do.
03:16And just finally, from me,
03:17and I know it's obviously only game two,
03:20but your opposition this weekend,
03:22Tottenham also won at the weekend.
03:24Is it too early to assess where other teams are at
03:26or what can you read into that?
03:29I think so.
03:30I was fortunate enough to manage to get to see
03:32most of the teams, some more than others.
03:36Obviously, we were preparing for the games
03:38that are up and coming,
03:39the likes of Tottenham, of Manchester City, of Everton.
03:43So, your eye is a little bit more on those teams.
03:46But, yeah, I think it's really hard to assess.
03:48Sometimes teams take a little bit of a while
03:51to get going.
03:52And then others sometimes can set off really well.
03:58Yeah, I think, yeah, Spurs at home against West Ham.
04:02Again, similar to our game away at Charlton.
04:05People would have thought,
04:05we know where the points are going.
04:06But, again, they would have had to earn that.
04:09And West Ham wouldn't have made it easy for them.
04:11But, yeah, of course, Tottenham are a decent team.
04:14They were evolving a lot over the last season.
04:16Last season, they changed a lot of things at the club.
04:19I like the idea of how they tried to do things.
04:22And, you know, they've been supported really well
04:25with bringing in key signings.
04:27And that hasn't stopped during the summer.
04:30You know, they've looked to strengthen again.
04:32And we'll provide tough opposition for any team.
04:36Thanks, Gareth.
04:37Good luck.
04:38Thanks, Ian.
04:39I think the first hand I saw was Rachel from Girls on the Ball.
04:42Rachel?
04:43Hi.
04:46Table, stock count.
04:47And I was going to ask you, you know,
04:50you've now managed 200 games as a manager.
04:54And I just want to ask you,
04:57you've found, you know, kicked off this season now,
04:59but what are some of your highlights, I suppose,
05:01throughout your career?
05:02And how much are you hoping to carry on achieving,
05:05I guess, at Liverpool?
05:07200 games.
05:08Wow.
05:09Yeah, that's, that's, I didn't know that.
05:11Yeah.
05:11And I suppose in the makeup of the league,
05:14with it being, I think, up until this season,
05:17it was 12 teams, only 22 games in a season.
05:20Yeah, there's a, there's a few seasons in there,
05:22but yeah, in some respects,
05:24it feels like I'm only just starting.
05:26In other respects, it feels like it's been a long run,
05:29but no, I've been plenty of highlights.
05:33I think one of the biggest bits of satisfaction you get in this job
05:37is seeing individuals thrive.
05:39And just that part you would have had in,
05:43in helping those individuals.
05:44And, you know, there's, there's probably too many to mention.
05:47I think that our,
05:50our job as head coaches is to try and provide that.
05:53We heavily, heavily focus on the team
05:56because that's our job to try and produce a team
05:58that is able to deliver results to,
06:01to appease your owners, to appease their supporters.
06:05But I feel that really honing in and helping individuals
06:09be the best versions of themselves
06:11really ultimately helps the team.
06:12I've spent a lot of years in development
06:14and working with young players.
06:17And then I've just really transferred that over to my work
06:20when I've become a head coach.
06:22I didn't really see that changing too much.
06:24How can we help individuals?
06:25How can we like really coach these individuals
06:28to, to be able to produce things for the team
06:31that are really going to be helpful?
06:35And I would suppose more recently,
06:37I'm really enjoying the job here.
06:39I think that we have a fantastic group of people
06:41here at the club.
06:42And then we have really good players
06:43who want to learn and grow.
06:45And you're never really surprised at the magic of coaching,
06:50of coaching individuals.
06:51I think if you're really able to work with people
06:56who have an open mind to doing things potentially
06:59a little bit differently.
07:00And I just feel that an openness to learning
07:03and openness to being coach is massive.
07:05I think that we've seen some really good strides so far
07:09with some of the players that we've had at the club.
07:11And I know I mentioned some of these guys in the pre-season
07:15about in a difficult moment last year,
07:17how they still grew through difficult times.
07:19And, you know, Grace Fisk was one,
07:22Cappy, Kerry Holland, Jenna Clark,
07:26you know, Beata has obviously not been at the club that long,
07:29but has really grown into a big leader for the team.
07:33And yeah, that's probably the most important part for me
07:38is seeing how those individuals can grow and develop
07:42and really help the team.
07:44You know, we talk a lot about how the game has grown
07:47on the pitch and the stars that are coming into the league,
07:49but tactically, technically, the game has grown a huge amount
07:53in terms of the coaching and the way teams are playing
07:56and what they're able to do on the pitch.
07:59How much have you enjoyed that challenge as the game has grown,
08:02you know, coming up against the managers who've also improved?
08:06Yeah, you've really got to up your game now
08:08because there's just so much coverage of football.
08:11There's so much coverage of the women's game.
08:14And yeah, there's a lot of critiquing from various angles
08:22all across the world, all across the network, all across online.
08:25I think that, yeah, people are like raising their game
08:30and like rightly so.
08:32I think that physically the game's really grown as well.
08:36I think that, you know, certainly in that period of,
08:39from my first game to the 200th game,
08:41there's been some big changes.
08:42A lot of it, like you say, will be like tactically.
08:44Tactical innovation has really improved.
08:46The physicality of players.
08:48I think that the aggressiveness of teams now
08:52when they don't have the ball
08:53is something that you've got to really be ready for.
08:57Whereas when I first started, I'll be honest,
08:59I think it was, if you were really good with the ball,
09:02technically, most of the time you could play through teams
09:04because they really struggled to repeatedly press
09:06or may be able to press for a certain period of the game.
09:09But, yeah, I think it's really good
09:13because it makes you feel that
09:15when you have won a game at the weekend,
09:17you've really earned it.
09:20Just a quick word on Grace Fisk,
09:22obviously getting Grace almost a hat-trick at one point.
09:25Even she looked a bit surprised at almost getting a third.
09:28But just a word on her and how she started the season.
09:32Yeah, she's been great.
09:34She's been great.
09:34I've spoken highly of her for a long time,
09:36not just as a player, but also as a person
09:39and the way she carries herself.
09:41I think she's like an exceptional captain.
09:44She's really well respected by everybody at the club,
09:47all of the girls.
09:48She's really well supported by the leadership group
09:50of Marie, Sam Kerr and Jenna Clark.
09:54Yeah, and I think she does a lot for this team.
10:00She's very good as a player.
10:02I think her performance last weekend
10:06was a performance where she could show
10:08what she can do with the ball.
10:11She'll have games potentially more so this weekend
10:14where it's going to be a little bit more
10:15out of possession as well,
10:16where I think she's really good.
10:18So yeah, I just, again,
10:19probably going back to my previous comments
10:21around players with an openness to learn
10:24and an openness to be brave to try things
10:26and an openness to express yourself
10:28and make mistakes and not worry about it
10:30and concentrate on the next action.
10:32I think Grace epitomises that.
10:34She's been really, really, really, really good.
10:41Thanks, Rach.
10:42I'm going to Emma Sanders, BBC Sport.
10:45Yeah, hi, Gareth.
10:46Nice to speak to you.
10:47Hi, Emma.
10:48Yeah, just to kind of carry on
10:50on what you were saying about Vivian Enderman
10:52and the fact that she showed glimpses
10:53of what she can do in that first game.
10:56How much more is there to come from her?
10:58And I suppose what are you working with her specifically
11:00that you kind of want to see her develop
11:01over the next few months?
11:04Look, I think there's loads more to come from Viv.
11:07I think physically she's very good.
11:10We still feel, of course,
11:12in any area of a player's makeup,
11:16whether it be physically,
11:17whether it be technically,
11:18tactical understanding is really key.
11:20I think working on the mentality.
11:23I think, you know, Viv is a young player,
11:26but actually belies her age in many things.
11:28When you have a conversation with her,
11:30she's already had good experiences.
11:32She's played in Champions League.
11:33She's playing on the world stage with her country.
11:38And she's found a place here at Liverpool now,
11:40and she's found a place that's probably ideal for her
11:42in this moment of her career and her development
11:44because she gets a platform to perform.
11:47She'll be well coached by the technical team
11:51and she'll be able to express herself.
11:54But yeah, I believe there's much, much more
11:57to come from all of these players.
11:58I think they've taken their games to impressive levels.
12:03Training intensity has really gone up.
12:05You know, that's taken us a while to get there,
12:07but we feel we've got that now.
12:09And it's just allowing us to probably be more
12:13of what we wanted to be last season.
12:15I think we showed glimpses last season
12:16of the team we wanted to be.
12:18And unfortunately, we collapsed
12:21in probably a lot of those certain areas
12:23that I mentioned before,
12:24whether it'd be like physically,
12:25it was a big one for us.
12:27I feel the team's really fit now.
12:28And I think, yeah, Viv's really important to us.
12:33I think that top end of the pitch,
12:34she's an exciting player.
12:36It allows having a player like that in your team
12:38to be able to break really quickly.
12:41I think I've spoken previously about
12:43at times we're going to be more direct to goal
12:46in a sense of forward passes.
12:49So the likes of Foucault, Ini, Natalya, Marie,
12:53playing forward quickly, Cappy being really important,
12:55Maui tomorrow when she's going to be with us.
12:58They're going to be more like the assisters
13:00and feeding the ball to Viv and Kerry
13:04and Mia and Anna Ozendaar when she's fit
13:08and obviously the front players that we have as well.
13:13Yeah.
13:13And just finally for me,
13:14kind of on Tottenham really
13:16and the growth that you mentioned before,
13:18not just off the pitch
13:19in terms of the investment from the club,
13:21but more specifically on the pitch,
13:23where do you think they really have developed
13:25the most over the last 12 months
13:27in particular under Martin Ho?
13:28So thank you.
13:31I think it'll always be about the idea.
13:34You can see that they've invested.
13:36You can see the players
13:37that they brought to the club,
13:39the intent.
13:41But I think it's nothing without the idea
13:43and the way you want to do things.
13:45And of course,
13:46you can see exactly what they're trying to do,
13:49exactly what they're trying to achieve
13:50in each game.
13:53And of course,
13:54having good players to execute that
13:56is going to allow you and help you
13:58in more ways than most
14:00to be able to do that.
14:02Thanks, Gareth.
14:03All the best.
14:05Thanks, Emma.
14:06And we'll go to Amy Rouchard
14:08from football.
14:09Amy.
14:10Hi, Gareth.
14:11Hope you're well.
14:13Just kind of following on from that,
14:14obviously you're trying to implement
14:16your own ideas at Liverpool.
14:18And I feel like the goalkeeper
14:20is obviously such a big part
14:22of what you want to do.
14:23And bringing in Kiara this summer,
14:25we saw in the first game,
14:26the impact that she has in possession
14:29and the way that she spares the ball around.
14:30I just wonder how important you think
14:32adding what she does in that sense
14:34is to, yeah,
14:35I guess your vision of what you want
14:36this team to be this season.
14:38Yeah, I think it's really key.
14:40I think when you talk about
14:41that spine of the team,
14:42you're obviously your goalkeeper,
14:43two centre-backs,
14:44you know,
14:44your midfield
14:46and your strikers
14:47and wingers are obviously
14:49really important,
14:49our game model.
14:50I think that goalkeeper
14:51is really key.
14:52I think that we've been
14:55really fortunate
14:55in convincing Kiara to come.
14:59We didn't have to convince her
15:01too much because obviously
15:02we had history
15:02and she knows the size
15:04of Liverpool
15:06and her sister's
15:06in the academy as well.
15:07So that was nice for her.
15:09That was a nice draw also.
15:10But yeah,
15:12I think Kiara's not daft.
15:14She saw that there was
15:15a platform here
15:16to be able to go
15:16and showcase
15:17what she can do.
15:18All of these girls
15:19and you can't blame them.
15:21They really want to achieve
15:22international honours
15:23and Kiara's no different.
15:24She's done it before.
15:25She will continue
15:27to compete
15:28at that level.
15:30But yeah,
15:31I think for us
15:31it's just really important
15:33to have firstly
15:34a goalkeeper
15:35who's able to execute,
15:36firstly a goalkeeper
15:36who understands the idea
15:37and yeah,
15:39I think Kiara's going to be
15:41important for us.
15:43Do you sense that,
15:44you know,
15:45I spoke to her last season
15:46and she expressed
15:46like the frustration
15:47obviously,
15:48you know,
15:48she wanted to play
15:49more often
15:49and things like that.
15:50Do you sense that
15:51she is sort of
15:52chomping at the bit
15:52and we've got this
15:53World Cup in the background
15:55as well looming
15:55at the end of the season?
15:56Can you sense that hunger
15:57in her coming
15:58for this opportunity?
16:00Yeah,
16:01you do.
16:01But also there's a calmness
16:03with her as well
16:03in the sense that,
16:05you know,
16:05she understands
16:06that that's her dream
16:07and that can be like
16:09quite far away.
16:10She's got a lot of
16:11things to contend with
16:12in the meantime
16:13and she understands
16:15how that process works
16:16of trying to achieve
16:17your dream
16:17of next game,
16:19next training session,
16:20controlling the controllables,
16:22that selection
16:23for the World Cup
16:24she can't control.
16:25What she can't control
16:26is the next training session
16:27and next opportunity
16:28to impress.
16:30But yeah,
16:31again,
16:31it's just bigger picture
16:32for me.
16:33She,
16:34I feel,
16:35has probably benefited
16:36from having difficulties
16:37over the last year,
16:3918 months,
16:41especially when she probably
16:43realises it wasn't just
16:44at times me
16:45not picking her.
16:47So,
16:47you know,
16:48I think once players
16:49experience that,
16:50they start to really
16:52grow
16:52and we have to remember
16:54Kiara's like really young
16:55still,
16:56has had a lot of experience,
16:58has done
16:58like magical things
17:00already in her career,
17:01won things.
17:03You know,
17:03to win the Golden Glove
17:04in her first season
17:05was like super impressive
17:07and showed her maturity
17:08beyond her years.
17:09What we love about Kiara
17:10is she's just
17:12a bundle of energy
17:13and she's
17:15great personality
17:16to have in the dressing room
17:17for the girls
17:17and for us
17:18and
17:19she wants to do well
17:21and she understands
17:22the team environment,
17:23she understands
17:23working with
17:24people that
17:26she can do it
17:27on her own,
17:28she knows that
17:29and I think,
17:30you know,
17:30all of our players
17:31have that really good
17:32understanding of
17:32how they fit
17:33within the team,
17:34how important the team
17:35is for them.
17:36Cool.
17:37Precious on her sister,
17:38eh?
17:39Yeah.
17:41Thanks, Gary.
17:41Thanks, Gary.
17:43We'll go to
17:44Charlotte Henry,
17:45the addition.
17:45Charlotte?
17:46Hey, Gary.
17:47Good to see you.
17:48Hi.
17:49That's what I wanted
17:50to pick up on the team
17:50from last weekend.
17:52Obviously,
17:53you won quite comfortably
17:54but what did that game
17:56tell you about
17:56how the WSL
17:57is expanding?
17:59Presumably you could
18:00see some qualities
18:00in Charlton
18:01in which they could
18:01compete in this league.
18:04Yeah.
18:04Yeah, I mean,
18:06when you play
18:07against that type
18:08of opposition
18:09or, you know,
18:09when you look at
18:10Charlton from last season
18:11and we played them
18:11in the quarterfinal
18:12of the FA Cup
18:13and, of course,
18:14we made quite a few
18:15changes in that game
18:16and it's really hard
18:17to compare
18:18what this game
18:19was going to be like
18:21because they've improved,
18:22we've improved.
18:24they gave away
18:25very little last season
18:26in a sense of goals.
18:27They would be disappointed,
18:29obviously,
18:29with the weekend
18:30but I do believe
18:31scoring early
18:32like Fiske did
18:33was key for us
18:35because the longer
18:36those games can go,
18:37they can feel
18:38more difficult
18:40and the confidence
18:41of the home team
18:42then especially
18:43is they've got
18:44more energy
18:45in their tank
18:45because they're
18:46holding on to something
18:46and the game
18:48quickly went away
18:48from them
18:49in the second half
18:49and we just wanted
18:51to raise our intensity
18:52of the way we're playing.
18:53We wanted to add
18:54more personality.
18:56We wanted to add
18:57more crosses and shots
18:59to really put them
19:00under pressure
19:00because sometimes
19:02those games
19:03you can just end up
19:04winning the game
19:04tight with a 1-0
19:06by forcing the goal,
19:07the ball into the goal,
19:09maybe an own goal
19:09or something like that
19:10so, yeah,
19:12it was pleasing
19:13but, again,
19:13we're not getting
19:14carried away
19:14with ourselves.
19:15We know that
19:16each team
19:17will pose
19:18different propositions
19:21in a sense
19:21of what they try
19:22to achieve
19:22and what spaces
19:23they give up.
19:25We weren't
19:27surprised by
19:28the game
19:29that we had.
19:30We expected it
19:30to be that type
19:31of game
19:32but, of course,
19:32you just hope
19:33that we're
19:35good enough
19:36to get that early goal
19:37and then to be able
19:37to kick on from there.
19:39But after that
19:40first weekend,
19:41do you see that
19:42the league
19:42is both expanding
19:43and strengthening?
19:45Presumably,
19:45you think you're in
19:45for quite a competitive
19:46season,
19:47even after
19:47the scoreline
19:48being quite
19:49comfortable
19:49with.
19:51Oh, yeah,
19:52we're not getting
19:52carried away.
19:53I don't think
19:54it's going to be
19:54like this
19:54every weekend.
19:55We know that
19:57challenges,
19:58you know,
19:58there'll be some
19:59tough challenges
19:59in front of us
20:00for sure
20:00but we're always
20:02about what our
20:03intent and ambition
20:04is and our intent
20:05and ambition
20:06is to win
20:06every game we play.
20:08We don't approach
20:08it in a way of
20:10we'll get bodies
20:11behind the ball,
20:12we'll try and
20:12suppress the team
20:13and nick a point.
20:15You know,
20:16that's not the way
20:17I want my teams
20:17to play.
20:18We're also not
20:18going to be
20:19incredibly gung-ho
20:20and leave ourselves
20:21super open at the
20:22back.
20:23But what we do
20:24is each game
20:25that we encounter
20:25and we come up
20:26against,
20:27we recognise
20:28where the spaces
20:29might be,
20:29where the
20:30opposition weaknesses
20:31potentially are,
20:32no different
20:32probably to any
20:33other team
20:33and we really
20:34train that
20:35to try and
20:36let it happen
20:37in the game.
20:38And turning to this
20:39weekend,
20:40Ian and Emma
20:41have asked you
20:41a bit already
20:41about Spurs.
20:42You said you
20:43could see what
20:44they're trying
20:44to achieve.
20:45Could you
20:46shed any light
20:46on that?
20:47What are you
20:47expecting from
20:48Tottenham this
20:48weekend?
20:51We know the
20:52way that they're
20:52going to try and
20:53animate in
20:54possession.
20:54We know what
20:55they try and do
20:55defensively.
20:56I think they
20:57have good
20:58individual quality
20:59in their team.
21:01Yeah,
21:01so there's
21:02no secrets
21:04and it would be
21:05the same for
21:06them in terms
21:06of what they
21:07know about us.
21:08I think it'll
21:09always be about
21:11what happens on
21:12the day and
21:12who's able to
21:13execute better
21:13with and without
21:14the ball.
21:15I think that's
21:15always, most of
21:17the time, gives
21:18you a large
21:18reflection on
21:19where the
21:19scoreline's
21:20going to lie
21:20and fall one
21:21way or the
21:21other.
21:22But yeah, look,
21:24I expect it to
21:25be tight one
21:26way or the
21:27other.
21:28I've never been
21:28one to super,
21:30super focus on
21:31the result.
21:31I always focus
21:32on the performance
21:33because then
21:33hopefully the
21:34performance takes
21:35care of the
21:36result.
21:36That's not
21:37always the
21:37case.
21:38There's times
21:38when you can
21:39play really
21:39well and not
21:39get anything
21:40and there's
21:40times when you
21:41don't play so
21:41well and you
21:42come away with
21:42the three
21:42points.
21:43Always about
21:44the performance
21:45for us.
21:45We train with
21:47a good intensity
21:48here at
21:48Melwood and we
21:49make sure that
21:49the players are
21:50prepared for
21:50games and we
21:52see the game
21:53almost as an
21:54extension of our
21:55training.
21:55We understand
21:56the importance
21:56of it is more
21:57different than
21:58training, of
21:58course it is.
22:00But yeah, I
22:01think I expect
22:04the game to be
22:05fairly tight.
22:07And finally,
22:08any special
22:08plans to try
22:09and stop
22:09Kirstie Hanson
22:10who got off to
22:11a flyer and
22:11a spurs shirt
22:12over the
22:12weekend?
22:13How can you
22:13stop someone
22:14like that?
22:16We make
22:17awareness of
22:18individuals.
22:19I think
22:20these players
22:21are, we're
22:23not talking
22:23about someone
22:23in Kirstie
22:24Hanson who's
22:25come from
22:25abroad and
22:26there's a
22:26little bit of
22:26an unknown
22:27quantity, a
22:28little bit
22:28like Viv.
22:30But even
22:31Tottenham will
22:32have plenty
22:33of preparation
22:34and video
22:35footage of
22:36Viv, even
22:36from a time
22:37at Wolfsburg.
22:38So yeah, there
22:39were no kind
22:39of shocks or
22:41surprises really.
22:42I think that's
22:43recognising
22:44again, like you
22:45mentioned, where
22:45strengths and
22:46weaknesses are
22:46are going to
22:47be key.
22:49But we try
22:50not to focus
22:51too heavily on
22:52individuals.
22:52We'll have a
22:53really good
22:53awareness of
22:54what they try
22:55to do as a
22:55team and where
22:56these individuals
22:57sit within that.
22:59Thanks so much.
23:00Have a good
23:01weekend.
23:03Thanks, Charlotte.
23:04I'll just
23:04check.
23:06Belle, anything
23:06from you?
23:07Belle from
23:09Hurdiam,
23:09Huawei?
23:10Yes, hi.
23:12Nice to see
23:13you.
23:13I'm kind of
23:14wondering about
23:15kind of the
23:15emotional mentality
23:17aspect, because
23:18obviously you've
23:18gone through a
23:19season where there
23:20were some really
23:21difficult games,
23:22some really
23:22difficult periods,
23:24and that mentality,
23:25it's not just
23:26about results,
23:27like you said,
23:28it's I think
23:28something a lot
23:30bigger in the
23:31environment within
23:31the squad.
23:32How have you,
23:33how has that come
23:34along over the
23:35summer and in
23:35pre-season, and
23:37how have you
23:37supported that?
23:41Well, yeah, I
23:42think it's
23:45kind of hard
23:46maybe to put
23:47into words of
23:48how you
23:49approach and
23:49deal with
23:50these things.
23:50I think, again,
23:52I know I've
23:53spoken about
23:53this quite a
23:54bit, and
23:55it can be
23:56difficult to
23:57talk about
23:58because the
24:00anniversary of
24:00Matt is
24:01coming up
24:01soon, the
24:02anniversary of
24:03John Humble,
24:03our kit man
24:04who passed,
24:05is coming up
24:05in October.
24:07No one can
24:08prepare you for
24:09those types of
24:10situations, and
24:12everybody deals
24:13with grief in
24:14different ways.
24:15On top of
24:16that, we were
24:17suffering on the
24:18pitch a little
24:19bit with
24:19injuries, with
24:21availability of
24:22players, with
24:23losing players out
24:24of the door, of
24:24coming late into
24:25the club.
24:25There was a lot
24:27to contend with,
24:27and every one
24:29of us, players
24:30and staff and
24:31representatives of
24:32the club, would
24:33have gone through
24:33that period
24:37differently, and
24:38experienced it
24:39maybe differently,
24:39and that's
24:42really tough, and
24:42we front things
24:45up, we promote
24:46the club, we
24:47promote unity, we
24:48promote a
24:49togetherness, and
24:52my biggest
24:54kind of
24:56accolade I
24:56could give to
24:57the people of
24:58Liverpool and
24:58this club was
24:59the way we
25:00behaved in the
25:01difficult moments.
25:01We celebrate
25:03together in the
25:04good moments, we
25:05suffer together, and
25:06I think that as
25:10difficult a season
25:10as it was, it
25:11really provided
25:14us with situations
25:15where you go,
25:17we've been through
25:18a lot, and now
25:22I'm pretty certain
25:23there's also
25:24additional stuff
25:25that can be
25:26thrown at you,
25:26because we were
25:27kind of in a
25:28situation going,
25:28well, what else
25:29is going to
25:29happen next?
25:30It was a lot
25:31to contend
25:31with, and my
25:33admiration for
25:34this club and
25:35the way that
25:36they handle
25:37those moments is
25:38huge and huge, and
25:39I know that goes
25:40for everyone who
25:41works at Liverpool
25:41Football Club, this
25:42is a really
25:42special place to
25:43be, and I
25:45feel going through
25:45those experiences,
25:46as much as they
25:47weren't nice and
25:48as much as they
25:48don't go away,
25:49they don't, because
25:51we're at that time
25:52again of the year
25:52where these things
25:54happen to us, you
25:55know, over a
25:55space of a month,
25:56and, like I
25:58say, people
26:01really recognize
26:02the teammate they
26:03have in front of
26:03them, the teammate
26:04they have to the
26:04side of them and
26:05behind them, and
26:06yeah, we really
26:07stood together in
26:07that period and
26:10went on that
26:11journey together
26:12and came out of
26:13it the other
26:13side, and that's
26:14the beauty of
26:15life and also
26:16of football, that
26:17you know, there's
26:18always light at the
26:19end of the tunnel,
26:19and sometimes it
26:20can look like a
26:21million miles away,
26:22but what you
26:24need to do in
26:24those moments is
26:25stick together, and
26:27we were really
26:28together in that
26:29time, and we
26:30come out of the
26:30other side, and I
26:31feel that we're
26:33better for it, never
26:35nice, never want to
26:36experience that
26:37again, but I feel
26:39like we are much
26:40better for it, and
26:41we are closer.
26:44I think in your
26:44football career, it's
26:45really, really
26:47difficult when you
26:48come to the end of
26:48your football career
26:49that you effectively
26:51look at,
26:52relationships that
26:53you had, you
26:54stay at a club for
26:54two years, you
26:55move, you go
26:55somewhere else for
26:56a year, you might
26:57not be there too
26:57long, you go
26:58somewhere else for
26:58four years, your
26:59circle of friends
27:01and compatriots that
27:03you work with is
27:04kind of like really
27:05small, and I think
27:08I've just gone
27:08through my year
27:09anniversary of being
27:10at the club and
27:11you know, the
27:12bonds that I feel
27:14we've made in this
27:14period of time
27:16through really
27:17horrible circumstances
27:18is like, they
27:19will last the
27:20test of time, and
27:21my respect for
27:23having people
27:24around you that
27:25are really
27:26caring is
27:27massive, I
27:28think it's
27:28really important
27:29so, yeah, I
27:30don't know, I
27:31know it's a
27:31long-winded
27:33answer, but
27:35the way I
27:36certainly feel, and
27:37I'm pretty certain a
27:37lot of people here do
27:38at the club is like,
27:40yeah, that was
27:40really tough, but we
27:41went through it
27:42together, we stood
27:43together, and we
27:44will come out of it
27:45the other side.
27:47Thank you very
27:47much, that was a
27:48really lovely
27:48answer, and I
27:49think the
27:50resilience can
27:51really be seen, and
27:52there's a lot to be
27:53said for the fact
27:53you have come out
27:54the other side, and
27:55I'm really happy to
27:56see that.
27:57Just kind of moving
27:58on to your summer
27:59transfer, we know
28:00you've had a lot of
28:00changes, how are you
28:02feeling about the
28:03synergy on the pitch?
28:04Do you feel like
28:05there's any areas or
28:06positions that are
28:07coming really strong
28:08and you're feeling
28:09like will carry you
28:10through some
28:10difficult games?
28:12Yeah, of course, you
28:14never know, you want
28:15as much competition
28:16for places as you
28:16possibly can, I think
28:18we've grown in that
28:19space for sure, I
28:21think head coaches
28:22will always say that
28:22they would have liked
28:23to have nicked
28:24another player or two
28:25in those last couple
28:26of days, particularly
28:28when you're getting
28:29some niggly injuries,
28:30we've got Mary Ward
28:31who hopefully will be
28:33back on the training
28:33pitch soon, has had a
28:35couple of niggling
28:35ones that are not
28:36super serious but have
28:38just restricted her and
28:39her involvement in the
28:40team, and the same
28:40with Lucy Parry, so I
28:42think it will be
28:44better when we get
28:44those guys back, I
28:46think the options
28:47then in that area of
28:49the pitch will help
28:51us a lot more, but
28:52you have to pay big
28:54credit to Sam Kerr,
28:56who's played it right
28:57back at the weekend
28:57and done a super job,
28:59he's played there in
28:59the pre-season, what I
29:01love is her openness
29:03to adapt and help
29:05the team, so yeah, I
29:08think there's good
29:09competition for places
29:10particularly in the
29:11midfield areas, when
29:12we get Maui tomorrow
29:13back, when Zara
29:14returns from the
29:15World Cup also, that's
29:16going to strengthen us
29:17a little bit more, but
29:18you understand in the
29:19course of the season
29:20that, you know, at the
29:21moment, Mary and Lucy
29:23Parry are not
29:24available, in a month's
29:26time they'll be back
29:26and it'll be someone
29:27else, so you just have
29:29to try and adapt and
29:31evolve as much as you
29:32possibly can in a squad
29:33because you're never
29:34going to cover
29:35everything that you
29:36really want.
29:40That's great, thank
29:40you, best of luck.
29:43Thanks, Belle, that
29:44concludes us for today,
29:45thank you everyone for
29:46coming on and see you
29:49soon and enjoy your
29:50football over the
29:50weekend.
29:51Thank you everyone.
29:51Thanks guys.
