The UK, Canada, France and nine other countries have announced measures targeting trade linked to Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said Britain would “stand up for what is right,” as international pressure grows over settler violence against Palestinians. Israel strongly opposes the measures and has rejected mounting foreign criticism. The action comes ahead of Israel’s October 27 election, adding a major political dimension to the dispute. The sanctions mark a significant escalation in Western pressure over settlement activity and violence.

00:00The situation in Palestine is a moral emergency.
00:03What the Netanyahu government is doing in Gaza is a stain on the conscience of the world,
00:07and there is increasing evidence war crimes appear to have been committed.
00:10And we are witnessing unprecedented settler terrorism in the West Bank.
00:15The British government has come to the same conclusion as the former Prime Minister of Israel and others
00:19that there is ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in areas of the West Bank,
00:23perpetrated by settler terrorists.
00:25And too often the Israeli government has turned a blind eye to this.
00:28And worse, members of it have made statements and taken actions to support the forced displacement of Palestinians.
00:35We will not stand by.
00:37We are going to be stronger in standing up for what is right, and bolder in the action we take.
00:42Our North Star is our belief in the two-state solution,
00:45that both the Israeli and Palestinian people have a right to self-determination, freedom and security.
00:52Today we are calling out the occupation of Palestine as unlawful.
00:55We are banning the import of goods from illegal settlements.
00:59We are taking action on services to target those who finance, facilitate or construct new settlements.
01:06And we are banning advertising of settlement properties and land.
01:11We are taking action too on settler terrorism.
01:14The action we are taking today is against the government of Israel, not its people.
01:19I know the trauma that Hamas' terrorist atrocity of October 7th has caused for the people of Israel and Jews
01:27across the world.
01:28It was a murderous act by a murderous terrorist organization.
01:33Israel faces existential threats to its security, most severely from Iran.
01:38That's why we are today also announcing the re-imposition of major economic sanctions on Iran,
01:44as well as bearing down on its network of proxy groups like Hezbollah.
01:49I also know that so many members of the Jewish community live in fear in the face of rising anti
01:54-Semitism here in the UK.
01:57Anti-Semitism is a scourge and an evil, and we will do more to tackle it as a government.
02:04And I also say this, holding British Jews responsible for the actions of the government of Israel is anti-Semitism,
02:13pure and simple.
02:16I'm proud of my Jewishness, and I'm wavering in my support for the security of the State of Israel.
02:22And I see absolutely no contradiction between this and my support for the State of Palestine.
02:28Indeed, quite the opposite.
02:31The only route to security for both peoples is living side by side in peaceful coexistence in a two-state
02:37solution.
02:39That's why we're taking action today.
02:41My parents came here as Jewish refugees.
02:43They saw a country that stood up for values of freedom, democracy, and the rule of law.
02:50That's what we're doing today.
02:52Standing up for our values.
02:54Standing up against oppression and injustice.
02:57Standing up for what is right.
