00:06This is what you said about Fidel Castro.
00:08Let's listen.
00:09You may recall way back in, what was it, 1961, they invaded Cuba.
00:13And everybody was totally convinced that Castro was the worst guy in the world.
00:17All the Cuban people were going to rise up in rebellion against Fidel Castro.
00:21They forgot that he educated their kids, gave them health care,
00:23totally transformed a society.
00:27In South Florida, there are still open wounds among some exiles
00:32regarding socialism and communism.
00:34So please explain, what is the difference between the socialism that you profess
00:38and the socialism in Nicaragua, Cuba, and Venezuela?
00:41Well, let me just answer that.
00:43What that was about was saying that the United States was wrong
00:47to try to invade Cuba,
00:50that the United States was wrong trying to support people
00:55to overthrow the Nicaraguan government,
00:58that the United States was wrong trying to overthrow, in 1954,
01:03the democratic elected government of Guatemala.
01:07Throughout the history of our relationship with Latin America,
01:11we've operated under the so-called Monroe Doctrine.
01:14And that said, that the United States had the right to do anything
01:17that they wanted to do in Latin America.
01:20So I actually went to Nicaragua,
01:24and I very strongly opposed the Reagan administration's effort
01:29to overthrow that government.
01:31And I strongly opposed earlier Henry Kissinger
01:36to overthrow the government of Salvador Allende in Trillium.
01:43I think the United States should be working with governments
01:47around the world, not get involved in regime change.
01:51And all of these actions, by the way, in Latin America,
01:55brought forth a lot of very strong anti-American sentiments.
