Experts predict the global auto industry is approaching a tipping point, with electric vehicles expected to account for up to 90% of new car sales by 2030 in leading markets. Rapid advances in battery technology, falling EV prices, expanding charging infrastructure, and stricter emissions regulations are accelerating the transition away from gasoline-powered vehicles.

00:00Welcome back to the Electric Viking. My name is Sam. If you think the transition to electric
00:05vehicles is slowing down, I mean, some people really do think that, or that Legacy Auto has
00:10time to figure it out and catch up, you probably need to have a look at what is happening right
00:15now
00:15in the world's largest automotive market. And it's the world's largest by a very wide margin.
00:22About twice as many cars are sold in China as what are sold in the United States every year.
00:25We just had a major moment of consensus from two of the smartest CEOs in the EV industry.
00:32The CEO of Xpeng or Xiaopeng, Mr. Xiaopeng himself, the billionaire founder of the company,
00:40and William Lee, the CEO of NIO. Both of them have come out and independently said that by 2030,
00:50electric vehicle penetration in China will surpass 90%. Think about that. In less than four years,
00:58gasoline cars will be extinct virtually in new car showrooms in China. Let's break down exactly what
01:05this means, why the Legacy Auto Giants are completely doomed. Not all of them, but many of them. And the
01:12new data that proves this trajectory is just unstoppable. Well, first of all, on the Electric
01:17Viking website, I'll put a link in the description below. We have more articles about electric cars
01:23and battery technology than any other website that I'm aware of in the world. So check that out.
01:29Link is in the description. And there you'll find our videos and analysis and articles about
01:35everything going on in the EV world. Look at these numbers, right? Legacy media, they love to talk
01:42about soft global demand. You hear that so many times, soft global demand. But let's look at the
01:48actual retail numbers coming out of China. In March of this year, new energy vehicle penetration was 51.5%.
01:57By April, it was 61.4%. In May, it hit a record 62.9%. June, it hit 63.6%. By
02:08the end of this year,
02:09we're on track to hit 70%. To hit 90% or more than 90% by 2030, that might be
02:16conservative. We might be
02:18at 100% by then. Think back to 2014 or 2015. He, Xiaopang, pointed out that back then, if you
02:27told an
02:27executive at Toyota, Volkswagen or Ford, that EVs would make up over 60% of monthly new car sales within
02:35a decade, they would have laughed you out of the room. Remember back then, Toyota actually owned
02:41part of Tesla. If Toyota still owned what they owned of Tesla today, that would be worth more
02:47than the entire Toyota company itself. Just that part ownership of Tesla that they had, which they
02:52got rid of. So they clearly didn't believe it then. And honestly, judging by their current strategy,
02:57a lot of them still don't want to face reality right now. Judging by their current strategy,
03:02a lot of them. But the numbers don't lie. Consumers are tilting toward pure electric vehicles
03:06at an accelerating pace. Particularly this year, numbers are going up massively. In fact,
03:12electric vehicle sales made up 67% of that new energy vehicle retail chunk in May.
03:17What makes this 90% forecast so profound is that it's coming from two companies attacking the market
03:23from completely different angles. William Lee at NIO runs a premium pure EV brand. He's betting heavily
03:31on battery swapping, high-end luxury EVs, and ecosystem loyalty. And they do do affordable EVs
03:36as well. His target is BMWs and Mercedes, but also Toyota's with their cheap, more affordable brand
03:43called Envo. And he explicitly stated at NIO partner day that by 2030, pure battery electric cars will make
03:51up more than 90% of the entire new energy vehicle market. Meaning more than 80% of the cars
03:58being sold
03:58in China will be fully electric. No hybrids, no plug-in safety blankets, just pure electric
04:04dominance. Meanwhile, He Xiaopeng at Xpeng, who just debuted the Mona L03 SUV, is targeting the massive
04:15cutthroat mass market. He is echoing William Lee's 90% penetration timeline because he sees
04:20just how fast the cost curves are falling for everyday buyers. When the mass market flips,
04:30it flips entirely. If you're a legacy automaker relying on internal combustion engine sales,
04:36think companies like Mazda, Mitsubishi, to fund your business, you are looking at a market that is
04:42fundamentally vanishing before your eyes. You're basically becoming Kodak.
04:47Here's the real kicker, and the part that should terrify traditional car companies the most.
04:51He, Xiaopeng, noted that the theme of the past decade was simply replacing gasoline engines
04:57with electric motors. That part of the battle is already won. The theme of the next decade,
05:04it's the total integration of artificial intelligence and the automobile. Just AI blitz.
05:10He expects every single car in the future to essentially be a robot on four wheels.
05:16Sounds very similar to what Elon Musk thinks, doesn't it? The core of the automotive transformation
05:21is no longer just about the battery pack or the chassis. It's about giving the car a soul.
05:27I don't know if I'd call it that, but it's what others do. A soul through advanced AI,
05:31autonomous driving, and true robotic coupling. Companies like Xpeng, Neo, Tesla, and Xiaomi,
05:38they are becoming more and more software companies that happen to build hardware.
05:43Legacy auto companies are metal benders trying to learn how to write code,
05:47and they are bringing a knife to a laser fight. Not all of them, but many of them.
05:52While Western legacy brands are lobbying governments for tariffs and trying to slow down compliance to
05:57wring out a few more years of profit from diesel and petrol vehicles, think Toyota,
06:03China is moving to a 90% electrified, AI-driven market by 2030.
06:08The gap isn't closing. It's probably widening into a canyon.
