A documentary about the history of online video games.
Transcript
00:02Hello, did you know online games based back to 1844 where Samuel Morse played chess with
00:09suicide playing long distantly via telegraph? In the 20th century, long distance chess was
00:16played worldwide via letters. You gave your opponent three days to make a move. Now with
00:2481% of Australians playing video games, you can make a chess move instantaneously as well
00:28as so much more. Online gaming is a big part of this society but have you ever
00:34thought about the graphics? The graphics are very different when video games
00:40started in the 1950s. When computerized games started in the graphics was 3D, some early video games were
00:523D, the Brain, 950, OXO, 952, and 10x2. One of the first games to have pixels was
01:02Space Meters with 224 by 256. Online games went from test-based games to complex graphics and virtual worlds.
01:17Not all early video games were test-based. They were releasing visual games. Test-based games were still being released.
01:263D-only memory, ROM cartridges, started in 1986. In the 90s, they stopped using the ROM cartridges.
01:36ROM cartridges were limited by the simple graphics they could use. In the 90s, 3D graphics started to become a
01:44popular, and the characters became more lifelike, and environments became more lifelike too.
01:54The first 3D video game was Maze War 1903. It was a first-person shooter. It changed the gaming world.
02:02Instead of two-dimension objects on screen, it was three-dimension, and it helped shape the way games are now
02:09a game.
02:12Some others were Battlezone 980. It was the first 3D tank game. So if you are a tank gamer, this
02:20is the game that started 3D tanks on screen.
02:26The first online game to be released was 985's Island of Kesme. You could chat with people, and it used
02:32tests to draw maps.
02:35Early games had 8-bit pixels, and newer ones had 3D polygons. The 8-bit pixels meant that the characters
02:44were made out of little squares, and the 3D polygons were triangles for the character. In the early days of
02:51polygons for characters, it was very obvious it was made out of triangles, but later they made it seem less
02:57obvious.
03:00In 1983 the first Nintendo was released, and in 1994 the first PlayStation was released. These two consoles are good
03:08examples of ones that have changed to allow new games and graphics.
03:14Some games like sports and simulators have evolved over time.
03:20Nintendo and PlayStation were some of the first to release 3D video games.
03:29Since the 90s, video game graphics have become much more lifelike. But, can video games be too lifelike? Yeah, especially
03:38with shooting games.
03:41They are becoming extremely violent. People about 6 years old are playing online games. The most popular games in Australia
03:48is publicly.
03:4990% of Aussie players say that they are playing just for fun, and 70% of Aussie players say
03:57that it is to improve their mental health.
03:59So, people do like violent video games, but they should be more restricted for who can play them.
04:10Some modern games that have good graphics started more than a decade ago, like War Thunder Dust 2012 and Hellfire
04:18Racing 2012.
04:24To talk for now, ladies and gentlemen.
04:26Amen.
