Brazilian factory keeps harmonica craft alive for over a century

From all the things made by hand in Latin America—hammocks, huipiles, alebrijes, chocolate, and so much more—Brazil is home to what describes itself as the only harmonica factory in the region. Located in the southern state of Santa Catarina, SHG Hering has been crafting the wind instrument for over a century, combining machinery with manual work while preserving the instrument's craftsmanship and reedy sound. The harmonica's breathy sound can be heard in Brazilian styles including bossa nova, jazz and choro.
