00:16These historic gardens and landscapes
00:17provide the setting to these wonderful
00:20historic buildings
00:21and they must be protected and preserved
00:24but they've also got to be
00:26adaptable and they've also got to
00:28change over the next few years otherwise
00:30we're going to lose them. It's difficult right
00:32now, I get the feeling we're in uncharted
00:34territory.
00:35I've never felt so uncertain
00:38about the future in
00:39historic gardens and landscapes as I have now.
00:45Honestly the trees that
00:47seem to be having the
00:50most difficult time during the extreme
00:51heat and drought are the trees that
00:53we really associate with an
00:55English garden or an English landscape
00:57more trees will have their lives
01:00shortened
01:02and over time
01:04more trees will die which sounds like
01:06a terribly depressing thing to say
01:07but I think there's only
01:09so much stress they can withstand.
01:14We interviewed
01:15quite a few gardeners and owners
01:18of sites and we also did an online
01:20survey and one of the things that
01:21revealed was that everybody
01:23was conclusive that climate change
01:25is having an impact on the sites that
01:26they manage
01:28that the impacts of climate change
01:30are being seen whether it's drought
01:31as we've got now in the UK
01:32or whether it's heavy storms and
01:35rain, milder winters
01:37all the gardeners reported that
01:39they're seeing these impacts in their
01:40gardens
01:42but they're really struggling to then
01:43cope with the changes that are
01:45happening because the changes are
01:47happening actually quite quickly now.
