The MV Wilhelm Gustloff, a German passenger liner, was torpedoed by a Soviet submarine in 1945, resulting in one of the deadliest maritime disasters in history. With over 9,000 people on board, including 7,000 civilians, mostly women and children, fleeing the war-torn east, the crew's desperate attempts to save as many lives as possible became a matter of minutes, not hours.
