00:00Tesla's sleek door handles are at the center of China's biggest automotive recall ever.
00:04Here's what you should know.
00:06So this is about 10 automakers is covering about 4 million vehicles.
00:10These are electrically controlled door handles.
00:13So they sit flush to the door of the car.
00:16And then when the owner approaches, they pop out.
00:19Tesla really pioneered this more than a decade ago.
00:21We've seen a lot of other car companies, especially in China, mimic that design.
00:25In a crash or let's say a car runs off the road into a pond or something and it's submerged,
00:30the car might lose power.
00:31And so if the door handles are electronically controlled, that's an issue because they stop working.
00:36Now Tesla and others have a manual release inside.
00:39The issue, some people have said, is that it's not clear.
00:43It's not intuitive.
00:44The two remedies that Tesla and others are taking, they're going to have a label to better sort of indicate
00:49where to find that in the car.
00:51And also they're pushing out a software update that would allow the windows to go down as soon as there's
00:56a collision.
00:56We don't really know how that would work, but that's what the companies are saying at this point.
01:01These four plus million vehicles would have to go to some sort of Tesla outlet to get a label put
01:07in the car.
01:07The software update can be done remotely.
01:09So the cost to Tesla doesn't seem like it'd be that great because they can just push out an over
01:14-the-air update.
01:15I don't think the labels would cost much, but it sounds like maybe an inconvenience for Tesla owners.
01:20So this recall essentially is only in China, as far as we know.
01:25We have not heard from Tesla as to whether or not they plan a similar move in Europe or the
01:29United States.
01:30China had already banned these type of door handles going forward, starting in 2027.
01:36Regulators in the U.S. and Europe said they're looking at this issue, but they've not gone as far as
01:41China to ban them.
