00:00In 1972, the Soviets revealed a radical new submarine that could easily outrun enemy torpedoes.
00:05You see, when the Soviets realized their submarines became obsolete against American stealth subs,
00:09they began development of a new type of submarine.
00:11At its heart was a powerful liquid metal cooled reactor that delivered up to three times more power.
00:16To slice through water efficiently, engineers built the sub with titanium using a teardrop shape with all edges smoothed over.
00:22This meant that the sub could accelerate from a dead stop to over 40 knots in less than a minute.
00:26A burst of velocity so extreme it would overwhelm tracking systems,
00:30allowing Soviet crews to close in at blistering speeds, strike and escape before enemy could react.
00:35However, due to inefficiency with its reactor, the sub was retired few years after deployment.
