00:00And my next question to him was, are you Titu? Are you, are you my mom's son?
00:05This is Niki Damu, and the man on the other end of that call was Afdar Singh, the older brother
00:12she had never met.
00:13I did lots of Facebook searches, I googled, I went on LinkedIn, but I found knowing Titu, his nickname just
00:23was not going to help me find him.
00:26The two half-siblings grew up in different countries and were both looking for lost family, Niki for her brother
00:33and Afdar for his mother.
00:35In May 2026, after decades of searching, Afdar entered the few clues he had about his mother into ChatGPT.
00:45The chatbot surfaced an article Niki had written about her mother, who had died in 2024.
00:51Unlike a conventional search engine, ChatGPT was able to interpret Afdar's vague clues in context and connect them to information
01:01in Niki's article.
01:02I had written that article, you know, whilst grieving for mom.
01:06I didn't want to forget all the creative influence that she had on me as a designer.
01:12I wanted people to know who she was, you know.
01:15I wrote that article as a way to create a digital legacy for her.
01:20I never thought that this was the piece of the puzzle that would reunite Afdar with his maternal family.
01:29But it was.
01:30The article included a sewing certificate from Dariwal, the Indian town where Afdar was born.
01:37He contacted Niki, and less than two hours after entering the prompt, they were speaking on the phone.
01:43And he said, Niki, do you know much about your mom's life in India?
01:50Was she married?
01:51And I said, yes, she was, and divorced.
01:54And he asked me, did she have a son?
01:56I said, yes, she did.
01:59And my next question to him was, are you Titu?
02:03Are you my mom's son?
02:05And he said, yes, I'm Titu.
02:07And he started crying.
02:08I started crying.
02:10Speaking to each other, they were finally able to put the pieces together.
02:15Afdar was born during his mother Savinder's first marriage in India.
02:19When that marriage ended, Afdar and his mother were separated.
02:23Savinder remarried and had new children, but never forgot her son.
02:27For Niki, what happened also changed the way she looks at AI.
02:32Obviously, there is a lot of negativity around AI.
02:37AI is changing our lives in many ways.
02:41We're becoming more efficient, losing jobs.
