Iran executed at least 900 people since January, rights group says

The Abdorrahman Boroumand Center documented 901 executions in the first seven months of 2026, including 56 on political or national security charges and 98 members of ethnic minorities — a further rise in death penalties in the Islamic Republic in recent years.

00:01Iran has executed over 900 people since the beginning of 2026, according to a report by
00:08human rights group the Abdurrahman Burraman Center. The Washington-based group documented
00:13901 executions between January and July and 28 executions in August alone. The rights group
00:20noticed a sharp increase in the use of capital punishment across cases involving national
00:25security, drug-related offenses and members of ethnic minorities. At least 56 people were executed
00:33during the seven-month period on political or national security charges. 13 were accused of
00:39espionage and 14 were sentenced on other security-related charges. Drug-related offenses
00:45accounted for at least 268 executions. The figures also show a disproportionate impact on ethnic
00:52minorities and other vulnerable groups. The report documented the execution of 16 women
00:57and two people under the age of 18 at the time of their alleged offenses. The latest figures add
01:04to growing international concern over the scale of executions in Iran.
