00:00Dina Asher-Smith helped Great Britain claim gold in the inaugural mixed 4x100m relay at the European Athletics Championships in
00:10Birmingham.
00:10Running the second leg, Asher-Smith joined Amy Hunt, Zarnel Hughes and Jeremiah Azu as GB set a European record
00:20of 39.97 seconds.
00:23The victory also secured Asher-Smith's 11th European Championships medal, making her one of the most decorated athletes in the
00:33event's history.
00:34Here's what she had to say after the race with her teammates.
00:37But what can you say? How can you communicate those achievements over this time?
00:43I think I struggle to because when you kind of start track and field, I think you just want to
00:47be fast.
00:47You want to be faster and just see how fast you can go.
00:50And I just never really thought that I would get to this point or even, I don't want to, I
00:55hate saying my own numbers, but I think that's like international medal number like 27.
01:00I didn't think that would be me just mainly because I never had that in my vision board.
01:05So to be in this position is great and it's very humbling as well because when you think about all
01:09the incredible athletes that I look up to and I'm fortunate enough to run with,
01:13it's incredible to be performing with people from different generations on different teams with so many different people.
01:18And now we've got my idols like Christina Horigou, you've got Richard Kilty on our team staff.
01:23So I'm incredibly humbled and grateful to be in a position to be meddling 12 years after my European debut,
01:2913 years after my senior debut as a 17 year old.
01:33So, yeah.
01:34I don't think so. It's so, it's so beyond the bounds of my dreams.
01:39I'm just so kind of euphoric right now.
01:42And I just can't believe it's happening.
01:45I think it will all sink in at kind of a later time, maybe on the podium, I don't know.
01:48But, yeah, I think I'm just so proud of myself and the way that I've handled this week.
01:52The emotions of it, the recovery, kind of being strict and staying disciplined after all the highs
01:57and just staying true to myself and true to the job that I went out there and did.
02:02What's been the mood around Great Britain and Northern Ireland this week?
02:05Because your success has been huge.
02:07Dina, as we've talked about history making as well.
02:09But the team in general, so many medals, so many golds.
02:12I think we cleared up nearly all the sprint medals.
02:14So I think we can definitely say we are a sprint nation in Europe for sure.
02:19And it's just euphoric.
02:20Like, we all kind of push each other on.
02:22When you see others winning medals, you want to get out there and get a bit of that for yourself.
02:25So, obviously, we opened the show and then Georgia just came through and did something incredible as well.
02:29So I think it just shows the strength that British Athletics have right now.
02:33And we're entering this era of just dominance.
02:36Final question for you, Zarnel.
02:37Is this event here to stay then?
02:40Yeah, it's definitely one that's going to be spectacular in the future.
02:44I'm looking forward to being a part of it again.
02:47It's new tonight.
02:48And I can only imagine how much better we can actually become because, as we said, we just practiced tonight.
02:54Well done, guys.
02:56Thank you so much. Have a great week.
02:57Thank you. Well done.
02:58Thank you so much.
