00:00Claire here!
00:02Welcome to Miss Mojo, and today, we're looking at young performers who sadly left us all
00:09too soon.
00:10Truth, justice, the American way rhymes, thanks to you two.
00:16Hayden Panettiere Starting on a soap opera at just four years
00:20old, Panettiere rose from an adorable child actor to a breakout star across film and television.
00:39Her unforgettable roles in Heroes, Nashville, and the Scream franchise, playing fierce,
00:45resilient characters, mark some of the highlights of her career.
00:48I guess I just always thought that if I was good enough, that she would be alright.
00:57Heartbreakingly, the star passed away in August of 2026, shocking the entertainment world and
01:03lifetime fans of her work.
01:05Her friends, family, and peers have shared memories of Panettiere online.
01:10While we lost her too soon, she will always be remembered as a source of light, wisdom,
01:16and positivity in the entertainment world.
01:18I did it on purpose to save me.
01:25Christopher Pettit Sadly, the struggle to cope with the pressures
01:29of fame is a recurring theme in this list.
01:32You wasn't planning on bunking down here, was you?
01:36Of course not, I've got a place to stay.
01:38Christopher Pettit seemed on course for a bright future with a role in the Western series,
01:43The Young Riders, and the cult favorite, Don't Tell Mom, The Babysitter's Dead.
01:49Well, it was petty cash money.
01:50You were spending petty cash money.
01:52Zach, I bought a pair of boots and a magazine.
01:55You bought a home entertainment center?
01:57It's Walter's idea.
01:59However, an underlying substance use disorder was something he constantly grappled with.
02:04By the late 90s, Pettit's career had dwindled to guest spots and bit parts.
02:09Who are you?
02:10I'm Tommy.
02:11I'm just doing a favor for a friend.
02:12The actor never got to add further credits to his name.
02:16On April 12, 2000, Pettit passed away from the combined effects of multiple substances,
02:23leaving his career an unfortunate case of unrealized potential.
02:27J. Madison Wright Morris.
02:30Though her onscreen career was brief, this young actress's story remains deeply moving.
02:36I'm getting a cat, right?
02:38I dream I got my cat.
02:40Best known for her role in the short-lived sci-fi series Earth 2, Morris walked away from
02:45show business as a teenager.
02:47While still in high school, she was diagnosed with restrictive cardiomyopathy, a disease of
02:53the heart muscle.
02:59Despite the challenges ahead of her, Morris pursued her education, earning a teacher's
03:04degree and finding love along the way.
03:07But two weeks after her wedding, her brave journey came to an end.
03:11She passed away from a heart attack just a week shy of her 22nd birthday.
03:17Bridget Anderson.
03:18Hollywood really can be brutal, even to young performers.
03:30Bridget Anderson tasted fame and success at just seven years old with the cult hit Savannah
03:36Smiles, successfully auditioning over 60 other child stars, including a young Drew Barrymore.
03:47But sustaining that early success is never easy.
03:51And before the end of the decade, Anderson's career had completely faded.
03:55The former actress ultimately dealt with substance use disorder, living with it beyond her teenage years.
04:02Tragically, Anderson never got the opportunity to reclaim her career, passing away from an overdose
04:08at only 21 years of age.
04:11Hey, did you like a piggyback ride?
04:15Yeah.
04:16Sammy Cain Craft.
04:18Sammy Cain Craft lit up the screen as part of the 2005 remake of The Bad News Bears, building upon
04:24her athletic
04:25skills to compete in the Junior Olympics.
04:35She would also explore other ventures in show business, fronting her own band to carve another
04:42path in the entertainment industry.
04:44I'm stuck in the overcast of Summerhill, and I have gone.
04:51However, this multi-talented star's potential was cut short by fate.
04:56In the early hours of October 9, 2012, tragedy struck when Craft lost her life in a car crash.
05:04She was just 20 years old.
05:06It was a heartbreaking loss of a performer who seemed destined for so much more.
05:12She was just incredible, my best friend, my everything.
05:16John Paul Stoyer
05:18Grace Under Fire was among ABC's highest-rated successes.
05:22However, lead star Brett Butler's erratic behavior led to the show's downfall.
05:28John Paul Stoyer, Butler's on-screen son, was pulled from the series after alleged
05:33inappropriate conduct from Butler.
05:36While protecting a young performer was the right thing to do,
05:39Stoyer never found his way back to the screen again.
05:43After multiple attempts to break into the music industry,
05:45he shifted gears and became a restaurant owner in 2015.
05:49But this venture would be Stoyer's last.
05:52On New Year's Day 2018, the former child star passed away from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
05:59Stoyer's former bandmates paid tribute shortly after, thanking him for a lifetime of great memories.
06:06Michelle Trachtenberg
06:08Among the more prominent child actors of her generation,
06:11Michelle Trachtenberg rose to fame with lead roles in The Adventures of Pete and Pete,
06:17Harriet the Spy, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
06:20Hey, kid.
06:22I'm not a kid.
06:23The actress graduated to adult-oriented roles with Gossip Girl,
06:27cementing her name in the pop culture landscape of the era.
06:30You can tell Jesus that the bitch is back.
06:33However, Trachtenberg's on-screen appearances became increasingly rare over the last decade.
06:40By 2024, concerns grew over her health, even while she maintained she was happy and healthy.
06:46On February 26, 2025, the actress's death sent shockwaves through the industry.
06:53Fans and former co-stars paid tribute to Trachtenberg, mourning the loss of a talent gone too soon.
07:01The world lost a deeply sensitive and good person in Michelle.
07:04Skye McCole-Bartusiak
07:06Bartusiak seemed to be a rising child star in the early to mid-aughts.
07:11Bob, I'm gonna say anything!
07:18After a memorable appearance alongside Mel Gibson in The Patriot,
07:22she secured more high-profile roles in 24 and Boogeyman.
07:26What's your name?
07:29Franny.
07:30However, that would be the height of her commercial success,
07:33as Bartusiak's later career largely comprised independent films and small roles.
07:40Her name resurfaced again in 2014, but under tragic circumstances.
07:46Bartusiak was found unresponsive by her boyfriend, later ruled as an overdose.
07:51She was 21.
07:52Her time may have been fleeting, but Bartusiak's legacy will live on through the warmth
07:57and spirit she brought to the screen.
08:00You know you make me very happy.
08:02Bobby Driscoll
08:03Though his voice has brought Peter Pan to life for children across generations,
08:08Driscoll never got his own fairytale ending.
08:11There it is, Wendy.
08:12Second star to the right and straight on till morning.
08:15Hailed as a wonder child after multiple leading roles in his youth,
08:19Driscoll struggled to transition into adult roles.
08:22Thinks I'll attack again?
08:25I don't know, Jim.
08:27It's hard to foresee the end of this.
08:28Amid scandals, a history of bad behavior, and a stint in rehab, the actor became a pariah
08:35in the industry. Ultimately, it was his substance use disorder that solidified his exile.
08:41Looking back on his career with bitterness, Driscoll remarked,
08:44I was carried on a silver platter, and then dumped into the garbage.
08:49When his Disney contract was cut short, he was thrust back into the civilian world.
08:55Peter Pan may have immortalized his voice, but the actor passed away in obscurity at the age of 31.
09:02Gary Coleman
09:03Best known as Arnold Jackson in Different Strokes,
09:06Coleman's iconic catchphrase remains a lasting piece of pop culture history.
09:11What you talking about, Ruth?
09:13At the peak of his career, he was the highest paid child star on TV.
09:17However, the actor was mainly in the news for the wrong reasons later in life,
09:23from legal troubles to financial woes and a tumultuous personal life.
09:27So f*** all of you!
09:29Sadly, Coleman was in the press for the final time in 2010. A tragic fall down the stairs
09:35resulted in his untimely demise at the age of 42. His death remains a somber reminder of
09:42Hollywood's failure to properly support one of its most influential young performers of all time.
09:48Who walked away with Gary Coleman's millions?
09:52You know, even after the lawsuit was concluded, I still don't know.
09:57Kevin Clark
09:59This young actor was excellent as rebellious drummer Freddie Jones and Richard Linklater's
10:03School of Rock.
10:18But regardless of how great he was, Clark ultimately decided against a career in acting,
10:23and the 2003 film remained his only credit. Fittingly, he became a professional musician
10:29instead. Unfortunately, Clark was killed in an accident in May 2021 at the age of 32. He was
10:36riding his bike in the dark morning hours when a car hit him. He was taken to the hospital afterward,
10:41but there was nothing they could do to save his life.
10:44He was living his best life, you know, as cliche as that was. He was super happy,
10:50you know, he was doing everything that he wanted to be doing. Musically, he was fulfilled.
10:54And I mean, he was just this ray of sunshine whenever he walked into a room.
10:58Matthew Garber
11:00Basically, anyone who was around in the 60s knew the name Matthew Garber.
11:04Perhaps it's a witch. Of course not. Witches had brooms.
11:07He starred as Michael Banks in Disney's Mary Poppins, which was not only hugely successful
11:14financially, but also touched countless audiences emotionally.
11:19We better keep an eye on this one. She's tricky. She's wonderful.
11:24But this came nearly 30 years after his death. During a visit to India in 1976,
11:30the actor contracted hepatitis. Though he made it back home to England,
11:34the condition had worsened, and he couldn't recover. In June 1977, at 21 years old,
11:40he passed away due to pancreatitis. Cameron Boyce
11:44Speaking of Disney, Cameron Boyce was a very popular star of theirs. Throughout the 2010s,
11:50he starred in the Disney Channel sitcom, Jesse, and the Disney Junior's,
11:54Jake and the Neverland Pirates. Perhaps most famously,
11:57he played Carlos in the Descendants movies. The third film from the latter franchise was a
12:14posthumous release, however, as it aired in August 2019, about one month after Boyce's tragic death
12:20of 20. He suffered from epilepsy and passed away in his sleep from a seizure. Often described as an old
12:26soul, Cameron believed deeply in helping others, combining acting with activism. His family now
12:32carrying on the work he began with the Cameron Boyce Foundation. The autopsy ruled it a sudden,
12:38unexpected death in epilepsy. Dana Hill
12:42A successful voice actress, Dana Hill played Max Goof in the 90s sitcom Goof Troop.
12:55The show didn't last long, airing between September and December of 1992,
13:00but she was already an established child actor, having received a Young Artist Award for the
13:05CBS movie Fallen Angel. Hill lived with type 1 diabetes, and it caused debilitating health
13:21issues throughout much of her life. In May of 1996, around the time of her 32nd birthday, she fell into
13:27a
13:27diabetic coma. She soon had a huge stroke and never recovered, passing away in July of that same year.
13:333. Anissa Jones
13:35This young girl from Indiana became a household name in the mid-60s for playing Buffy Davis on Family Affair.
13:42But I like it here with you and everybody.
13:47Buffy, do you honestly think I'd let a little girl like you go traveling around the world without me?
13:52Jones was 8 years old when audiences first saw her in the role, and she remained with the series until
13:57its conclusion in 1971. She subsequently disappeared from the spotlight and wasn't seen on television
14:03again. So she was, you know, at that natural teen age where she's railing against everything. And so
14:09when the show was over, she says, I'm not doing this anymore. And that was very tragic.
14:14In August 1976, Jones suffered a fatal overdose. She was just 18. A toxological study later found large
14:22amounts of illicit substances in her system, including a sedative known as cecobarbital.
14:28Jones' family sued the doctor who prescribed the drug and were awarded close to $80,000.
14:34Michelle Thomas. A popular sitcom actress, Michelle Thomas notably found success on both
14:40The Cosby Show and Family Matters. She was most recognized for her work in the latter,
14:46playing Myra Monkhouse in 55 episodes of the show.
14:49Steven, you saved the restaurant. You're a hero.
14:53Well, hero is such an appropriate word.
14:57Well, you may have extinguished those flames, but you've only ignited mine.
15:01Shortly after the iconic series concluded, Thomas was diagnosed with the type of abdominal cancer
15:07that remains very hard to treat. The news came in August of 1997, just one month shy of her 29th
15:13birthday. Though she continued to work and had multiple surgeries, Thomas only made it another
15:1816 months before passing away on December 23, 1998, at 30 years old.
15:23Anytime I mention Michelle Thomas, there's a certain amount of innocence I'm just taken back to.
15:29Rob Knox.
15:31Most people will know Rob Knox from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,
15:35in which he played Marcus Belby.
15:37For those of you who don't know, Marcus's uncle invented the Wolfsbane potion.
15:40Is he working on anything new?
15:42I don't know.
15:44And my dad don't get on.
15:45Probably because my dad says potions are rubbish.
15:48His only potion worth having is a stiff one at the end of the day.
15:51However, he had been working in the industry since he was 11,
15:54and served as an uncredited extra on the 2004 version of King Arthur.
15:58Knox was also reportedly supposed to appear in the Deathly Hallows,
16:02but he was killed before getting the chance to do so.
16:04He and his brother Jamie were by a London bar when an armed man began intimidating Jamie.
16:09Knox, then only 18, came to his siblings defense and was stabbed to death.
16:13For Rob to do what he did on the night of the 24th of May is, you know,
16:20I can't imagine many people doing that, but he put himself in harm's way to save his friends and
16:25his brother. And that's that's heroic.
16:27The attacker named Carl Bishop was sentenced to life in prison.
16:31Nikita Pearl Waligwa
16:33In 2016, Nikita Pearl Waligwa starred in Queen of Kotwe,
16:38a biographical sports movie about Ugandan chess player Fiona Mutesi.
16:42She played Fiona's friend, Gloria, who helped her learn and master the game.
16:58That same year, Waligwa learned that she had a brain tumor. The film's director,
17:02Mira Nair, is said to have helped move the actress from Uganda to India so that she could
17:07seek better treatment. In chess, the small one can become the big one. That's why I like it.
17:15She fought the cancer for nearly five years, but eventually succumbed to the disease in February 2020
17:21at the age of 15. Dana Plato
17:25An enormous teen star, Dana Plato was most well-known for playing Kimberly Drummond on
17:30different strokes. She appeared in 140 episodes, and her work on that sitcom notably got her a
17:48Young Artist Award nomination. Plato also appeared in the enormously controversial Night Trap video
17:53game, which was uncommon for celebrities at the time. On May 7, 1999, the 34-year-old actor was a
18:12guest in The Howard Stern Show, where she discussed her problems with substance use. She died of an
18:17overdose the following night while in Oklahoma with her boyfriend. She was eventually said to have taken
18:22her own life, Sawyer Sweeten. Between 1996 and 2005, Sawyer Sweeten starred as Jeffrey Barone on
18:31Everybody Loves Raymond. When the show began in September 1996, he was just one year old. When it
18:48ended in May of 2005, Sweeten was 10. In other words, fans watched him grow up in real time, right
18:55in
18:55front of their eyes. But nearly 10 years later, in April 2015, Sweeten took his own life. He was less
19:02than a month away from turning 20. Many of his peers released touching statements in which they praised
19:06his kindness and talent. His TV dad, Ray Romano said, quote, I'm shocked. He was a wonderful and
19:13sweet kid to be around.
19:15Brittany Murphy. When she was young, Brittany Murphy convinced her single mother to take the
19:20family from New Jersey to California so she could break into the entertainment industry. They went to
19:24LA in 1991, and Murphy immediately found work on the short-lived Fox sitcom Drexel's Class.
19:30She later achieved enormous fame playing Ty Frazier in Clueless. Sadly, Murphy passed away in 2009 at the
19:53age of 32. The official cause of death given was pneumonia, anemia, and prescription substance use,
19:59and the circumstances of her passing are still shrouded in mystery. Many believe there's more
20:04to the story, including some who say mold may have played a part in her death.
20:09There's a certain memory that you go to when you think of her and your time spent on Clueless.
20:14Her laugh. Yeah. Contagious. So sweet.
20:17He was so, so, so genuinely sweet.
20:22Lee Thompson Young. This actor initially found success on the famous Jett Jackson.
20:41The show debuted in October 1998, when Young was 14 years old. Unlike some child stars, he continued
20:49booking gigs as he got older and found a steady job on Rizzoli and Isles. But he was also struggling
20:55with
20:55mental health issues, including depression. When he didn't come to work one day, authorities made
21:00their way to his residence, where they discovered he was deceased. Young had taken his own life at
21:04the age of 29. And his Rizzoli and Isles character, Barry Frost, was subsequently killed off.
21:10Everyone at Rizzoli and Isles is devastated by the news of the passing of Lee Thompson Young.
21:15We are beyond heartbroken at the loss of the sweet, gentle, good hearted,
21:21intelligent man. He was truly a member of our family. Brad Renfro. When Brad Renfro was 11 years
21:28old, he starred as young Mark Sway in the Joel Schumacher legal thriller, The Client.
21:33God, I'm sorry I worried you. I'm glad you came. I'm not sure that I had that much choice.
21:40Mom, if you don't want me to tell him where the body is, I won't. The movie grossed over
21:44a hundred million and launched his career. He would later appear in notable motion pictures
21:48like Apt Pupil and Ghost World. But Renfro also dealt with substance use disorder and was first
22:08arrested at just 15 for possession of illicit substances. He would face numerous legal
22:13troubles throughout the 2000s, including multiple arrests for driving under the influence. He passed
22:18away from accidental drug intoxication in January 2008 at the age of 25.
22:24Heather O'Rourke. Six-time Young Award Artist nominee and one-time winner Heather O'Rourke is
22:30best known as the little girl who wonderfully played Carol Ann Freeling in the Poltergeist movies.
22:35The series' third entry, Poltergeist III, was released a little over four months after her
22:40untimely death in 1988. The young actress had been feeling sick and was taken to the
22:56hospital in the morning of February 1st as her condition worsened. She was then diagnosed with
23:00intestinal stenosis. Basically, her digestive organ had narrowed and therefore couldn't function
23:06properly. Doctors performed surgery, but O'Rourke was already in septic shock and went into cardiopulmonary
23:12arrest. She passed away at just 12 years old. She said she loved me and then she suffered cardiac
23:18arrest in the ambulance and then they operated on her after they had her stable and they told me she
23:26had a congenital blocked intestine and died of septic shock. Anton Yelchin. This future star was just a
23:34baby when he moved from the Soviet Union to America in September of 1989. About 12 years later, Anton Yelchin
23:40portrayed Bobby Garfield opposite Anthony Hopkins in Hearts in Atlantis. He went on to have a very
23:53successful career in film and TV. In June 2016, the 27-year-old actor wasn't at a rehearsal as planned,
24:00so his friends decided to look for him at his home. It was there that they found Yelchin deceased,
24:05having been crushed to death by his car pinned between a brick pillar and fence. The driverless
24:10vehicle had rolled down the steep driveway causing the tragic accident. He was the youngest one of
24:16the crew and I almost feel like he was the wisest one, so it was a terrible loss. We're mourning.
24:23He's
24:24he's an irreplaceable person and the kindest person and he loved he loved what he did. Josh Ryan Evans.
24:32The recipient of two Soap Opera Digest Awards and a Daytime Emmy nomination, Josh Ryan Evans found a
24:38claim as Timmy Lennox on Passions, a popular soap opera. Evans was born with a type of dwarfism and
24:53suffered from a congenital cardiac condition. He was in the hospital getting treatment for the latter in
24:58early August 2002, but he tragically died during a procedure at the age of 20. In a bizarrely tragic
25:04coincidence, the episode of Passions in which his character Timmy dies aired on the exact same day
25:09that Evans actually passed away. On the day of his passing, Josh Ryan Evans' character Timmy also
25:16died on the soap opera Passions in an episode shot over a month ago. Jonathan Brandes.
25:22Jonathan Brandes notably brought young Bill Denbro from It to life, and he was also very successful
25:29outside of the miniseries. In fact, he was nominated for six Young Artist Awards throughout his career,
25:34and won one for his performance in the NBC sci-fi program Sequest DSV.
25:54But his career began to slow by the late 90s, and he reportedly fell into a deep depression. He
26:00turned to alcohol as a result, becoming a heavy drinker. On November 11, 2003, at the age of 27,
26:07Brandes attempted to take his own life. He initially survived and was rushed to the hospital,
26:12but succumbed to his injuries the next day.
26:15When I hear Jonathan's recordings over and over, and the amount of love that was there,
26:22and that he must have been going through so much pain.
26:25Judith Barsi
26:27The following is a very disturbing story, so take heed. Judith Barsi was an enormously successful
26:34actress who appeared in dozens of movies and TV shows throughout the 80s. She was perhaps most
26:39famous for her role as Ducky in the animated classic, The Land Before Time.
26:43All right. I'm not a long neck. I'm a big mouth. But I am all alone. I am.
26:53But her father, Joseph Barsi, had an alcohol use disorder and severely mistreated his wife and
26:58daughter. It grew so bad that young Judith broke down and protective services were called. Her mother
27:04Maria promised them that she was going to end things with Joseph and leave with Judith. Sadly,
27:09that never happened, as Joseph killed both Maria and Judith before taking his own life.
27:15Corey Haim
27:16One of the biggest stars of the 1980s, Corey Haim was a teen idol who often starred in movies
27:22alongside Corey Feldman. Unfortunately, Haim had a difficult life,
27:42being mistreated and beginning substance use at an early age. By 2001, he had reportedly been in and
27:48out of rehab 15 times. He was also broke and developed a prescription substance use disorder.
27:54In March of 2010, Haim began suffering flu-like symptoms and collapsed in the early morning hours
28:00of March 10th. He later died at the hospital. It was ruled as a natural death from pneumonia,
28:06exacerbated by other factors. He was 38 years old.
28:10He was doing amazing. He was nearly sick that day. He died in my arms. I knew he was nothing
28:18else,
28:19but I didn't know exactly what it was. I had to wait for the coroner's report and the autopsy.
28:25River Phoenix
28:27The eldest of the famous Phoenix family, River began acting at 10 years old. He became a household
28:33name with Stand By Me, released the same month that he turned 16.
28:45He won further acclaim with roles in Running on Empty and My Own Private Idaho. In the final days
28:51of his life, he embarked on a substance binge with John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
28:57On the night of October 30th, 1993, Phoenix was in L.A.'s famous Viper Room when he began feeling
29:03sick. He made his way outside and collapsed on the sidewalk. Although he was rushed to the hospital,
29:08attempts to save him were unsuccessful.
29:11River Phoenix stumbled out of this trendy sunset nightclub known as the Viper Room and died of a
29:18massive drug overdose. Paramedics found him on the sidewalk. He didn't have a heartbeat,
29:24didn't have a pulse. Is there a name we forgot about? Let us know in the comments.
29:33We'll see you later.
29:34We'll see you in the next one.
29:34Bye!
