00:00Hundreds of thousands without power as Storm Erwin batters UK.
00:04Hundreds of thousands of homes are without power,
00:07and one in five flights have been cancelled as Storm Erwin batters the UK.
00:12A red weather warning is in force in parts of Scotland,
00:16with millions of people urged to stay at home as wind gusts of 100 miles per hour,
00:22160 kilometres per hour, were recorded.
00:25All trains were cancelled in Scotland on Friday,
00:28while every school in Northern Ireland is closed as the storm damaged buildings,
00:34brought down trees and caused power cuts.
00:37The Republic of Ireland saw its strongest winds ever recorded,
00:41and 715,000 properties there are without power.
00:46There are also amber and yellow warnings for wind, rain, snow and ice across the UK over the next few
00:53days.
00:54Red is the most serious weather warning the Met Office can issue,
00:57meaning dangerous weather is expected,
01:00and people are urged to take action to keep themselves and others safe.
01:04A red warning covering Scotland's central belt,
01:08including Edinburgh and Glasgow,
01:10and southwest Scotland, is in place until 1700 hours.
01:15Northern Ireland is in the eye of the storm,
01:17with a real threat to life and property,
01:20First Minister Michelle O'Neill said.
01:22There are 240,000 properties without power in Northern Ireland,
01:27and the number is expected to rise, NIE Network said.
01:32More than 25,500 homes and businesses are without power across central and southern Scotland,
01:39and a further 5,000 in Wales, according to SP Energy Networks.
01:44Thousands of homes were also without power in England across Northumberland,
01:48County Durham, Tyne and Ware and Cumbria.
01:52Electricity Northwest said it could take until Saturday evening to get power back in Cumbria.
01:58There has been severe disruption at airports,
02:00with some 1,124 flights, one out of five, cancelled,
02:06affecting around 150,000 passengers,
02:09according to aviation analytics firm Sirium said.
02:12Dublin, Edinburgh, Heathrow and Glasgow were the worst affected airports, it added.
02:19A Ryanair flight that left Stansted Airport in Essex for Edinburgh
02:23reached the skies above the Scottish capital,
02:26but was unable to land and flew back to Stansted.
02:30Bus and train services have been suspended in NI,
02:34while supermarket chain Tesco said all its stores are closed,
02:37and home deliveries were also cancelled.
02:39Glasgow and Edinburgh have closed all of their schools.
02:43There are around 30 schools shut across Northumberland,
02:47seven in Cumberland, and just over 30 across north-west Wales.
02:51Ferry operators, including Irish Ferries, Steneline and Calmac,
02:56have had to cancel numerous crossings.
