00:17The United States is facing a rare and potentially dangerous gap in the Western Pacific, and
00:25China could be ready to exploit it.
00:27The USS George Washington, the U.S. Navy's forward-deployed aircraft carrier based in
00:34Japan, is heading west toward the Middle East.
00:37Its mission is to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has already spent months at
00:43sea supporting U.S. operations linked to the Iran conflict.
00:47That movement creates a temporary problem for Washington.
00:51For a period, there may be no U.S. aircraft carrier operating in the Western Pacific.
00:57And while that does not mean America has abandoned the Pacific, analysts say the absence carries
01:04major strategic and political significance.
01:07China could use the carrier gap to project strength and reinforce a message across the
01:13region, that the United States is stretched thin, and may struggle to maintain its military
01:18presence across multiple theaters at the same time.
01:22And Taiwan is at the center of the concern.
01:25Beijing claims Taiwan as part of China, and has repeatedly refused to rule out the use of
01:32force to bring the island under its control.
01:34But analysts are not predicting an immediate Chinese invasion simply because one American
01:41carrier has moved away.
01:43Instead, the bigger risk could be increased pressure.
01:46China could conduct larger military exercises, increase aircraft and naval activity around Taiwan,
01:54test U.S. and allied responses, or step up so-called gray zone operations designed to pressure
02:01Taiwan without triggering a full-scale war.
02:04And Beijing already has plenty of military power in the region.
02:09China now operates three aircraft carriers, including its newest and most advanced carrier, the Fujian.
02:16At the same time, Chinese forces have continued naval and military activity across the South China Sea,
02:24including around areas involving the Philippines, Japan, and other regional powers.
02:29For Washington, this creates a difficult balancing act.
02:33The U.S. Navy has 11 aircraft carriers, but only a limited number can be deployed at any given time.
02:40With American forces heavily committed to the Middle East, maintaining a strong presence in the Indo-Pacific
02:47becomes increasingly difficult.
02:49Still, this is not a complete U.S. withdrawal from the Pacific.
02:53American submarines, fighter aircraft, long-range missiles, bases, and
02:58thousands of troops remain positioned across the region.
03:02And another carrier could eventually rotate into the Western Pacific.
03:06But aircraft carriers are more than weapons.
03:09They are highly visible symbols of American military power.
03:13So even a temporary absence could give Beijing an opportunity to test Washington's resolve,
03:19and convince regional countries that China is becoming the dominant military power in Asia.
03:25The real question is not whether China will suddenly invade Taiwan.
03:30The question is whether Beijing will use this temporary opening to push harder, test the limits,
03:37and see how far it can go before Washington responds.
03:40For now, the carrier gap may be temporary.
03:44But in the increasingly tense Indo-Pacific, even a temporary gap can send a very powerful message.
