Meet the African Crested Rat β a rare East African mammal with a defense mechanism unlike almost anything you've seen.
It chews poisonous plant material and applies the toxin to specially adapted hairs along its flanks.
Then, when threatened, it raises those hairs and basically tells the predator:
βGo aheadβ¦ bite me.β π³
The toxin comes from the poison-arrow tree, Acokanthera schimperi.
