00:00Myanmar has for the first time recognized more than 300,000 Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh
00:05as former residents of Rakhine State.
00:09The foreign ministry says they could return when security improves.
00:13But with no timetable and fighting still underway, a safe return remains uncertain.
00:21Previous attempts by Bangladesh and Myanmar to begin repatriation have failed
00:25because of concerns over security, citizenship and basic rights.
00:29The process has become more difficult as Myanmar's military continues fighting the Arkan Army,
00:34which has taken control of large parts of Rakhine State.
00:38Bangladesh maintained any repatriation must be voluntary, safe and sustainable,
00:43while Rohingya refugees want guarantees of citizenship, security and fundamental rights before returning.
00:49Any eventual return could also affect Rohingya living elsewhere in the region.
00:53Malaysia currently hosts more than 126,000 Rohingya registered with the UN Refugee Agency.
