00:00Right, hello everyone, welcome back to the channel. You join us here at Trump
00:04International Golf Links, the old course, and as you can see I'm joined by Fergus
00:07Bissett. Now, Fergus, we're not talking about official rules in this video, are we?
00:11No. We're talking about the unwritten rules of golf. We're talking about etiquette.
00:15Okay. And yeah, none of these are hard and fast rules. There are a couple of them
00:21there are recommendations within the rules, but really this is kind of best
00:25practice and things that, you know, do unto others as you would have done unto
00:30yourself sort of rules. Respect and kind of making sure that you do the right
00:35things by other people on the golf course. Yeah, and specifically we're going to talk
00:38about some of the mistakes that people make when it comes to golf etiquette and
00:42those sort of unwritten rules that you're not technically breaking the rules but you
00:45could ruffle a few feathers within your group and annoy certain people if you do these.
00:50I think that's it. So you're going to follow us down this hole, we're going to play the
00:53first hole, we're going to have a little one hole match. Yeah. Par five. Okay. And we're
00:56going to cover some of those unwritten rules, those etiquette mistakes that golfers make. So
01:00come along with us and hopefully you'll learn a thing or two about those unwritten rules.
01:04Ralph, Fergus, did we get this underway? Me versus you? Yeah. Yeah, let's go for it.
01:08One hole, par five. It's a bit misty down there. There are some people who've just teed off,
01:13but I'm pretty sure they're out of range. So I think we're, I think we're good to go.
01:17Well, no, no, no, no, no. This is etiquette rule number one that you're about to break.
01:22Those people might still be in range. I would say with your length, you could probably just
01:27about get it to them. And there is nothing that's worse, I think, than having the ball roll past you
01:34on the first hole when the people behind are going to push you all the way around.
01:39Yeah, you might be right there. I think that is poor form. I think you've got to respect
01:43instructions and then the instructions might say, please wait until the fairway is clear before you
01:48tee off. I think you've got to do that. Like they might say, please don't walk on this bit of
01:52ground under repair. Please don't climb this fence, whatever it might be. Respect the rules and the
01:59guidelines that are there on the course. And I think if you just give these guys a few minutes,
02:03then you'll avoid breaking the first etiquette rule that we're looking at here.
02:08I think you're right. I think you're right. I probably should have, could and should have
02:10waited. Although they have definitely, they're definitely out of range now.
02:12They are now. They are now.
02:13We've walked up past that bunker.
02:14So, um, but you are right. I've made the fatal mistake. Um, but thankfully you've helped me
02:21correct it and let's see if we can hit a good shot here.
02:29You can. That's very good indeed.
02:31I'm pretty happy with that one.
02:32That would have, that would have got to them.
02:34If I might, it would have done. Yeah.
02:38Uh oh.
02:40Oh, oh, oh.
02:42Now you've hit that quite a long way offline, Fergus.
02:45I have.
02:46We know there's some paths and another hole that runs to the left down there.
02:49Do you not think you should have shouted four there?
02:51I should have shouted four.
02:52It feels like you've made another etiquette mistake there.
02:54And if you're going to hit it offline, you should always shout four, right?
02:58You should. You definitely should. I've made a, a, a big etiquette blunder there.
03:02Right.
03:02I did the classic that the pros are doing, holding the arm out.
03:06Yeah.
03:06That's not good enough. I mean,
03:07if you think that it could be going anywhere near another player,
03:11then you've got to shout four.
03:13It might not save them from being hit,
03:15but it might give them a chance to protect their head,
03:18perhaps get behind their bag.
03:20That could be the difference between a fractured skull and just a bruise on the back.
03:24So yeah, if, if in doubt, shout four, I should have done so.
03:28Absolutely. We're one mistake each on this one, aren't we?
03:30We're not doing very well.
03:31Not a good start.
03:32Let's get down there and see if we can find it.
03:39Joel, you're not going to help?
03:42What's that? Oh, sorry. You want some help?
03:45I feel like, I thought I might have made an etiquette mistake number three there.
03:50I'm not looking for your ball.
03:55Yeah, I think it's fair to say that that is a clear etiquette mistake that you've made there.
04:01I think it's polite to look for other players' balls.
04:06Especially from a pace of play point of view.
04:08I think that's the key thing, isn't it?
04:10Everybody's round is going to be improved if we can find my golf ball and we can get going,
04:15and you'll be able to play your lovely tee shot.
04:18Shall we have a look then?
04:20Let's have another look, come on.
04:23Oh, look, here it is.
04:24Look, just down here.
04:25Yeah, thanks very much.
04:27All right?
04:27Yeah, okay.
04:28Everyone feels better now, don't they?
04:29That could have been a lot quicker.
04:30It could have been.
04:31I apologise.
04:32Come on, let's see what you've got.
04:36What's out?
04:37You're back in play.
04:38Back in play.
04:45God!
04:49Wait a minute, wait a minute.
04:51Come back here.
04:52This is golf etiquette at its worst.
04:56Classic golf etiquette mistake.
04:58But look, I just duffed it.
04:59Yeah, you've made a hole in the ground.
05:02You've been swearing like a trooper.
05:04You've chucked the club.
05:06Nobody likes to see someone get overly angry.
05:08Everyone gets a bit angry at golf, of course,
05:11but it's an etiquette mistake to get too angry, to go too far,
05:16to push it to the point where other people start to be impacted by it.
05:19I always think that that's the case.
05:21Don't you reckon?
05:21I agree.
05:22I think I've clearly taken it too far here.
05:24I've made some damage to the course, which I will repair for the record.
05:27But yeah, I think if you get to the point where other people don't want to talk to you
05:31because they don't know how you're going to react to it,
05:33they might make the whole situation worse.
05:35And if they're feeling so much trepidation that it affects their shots,
05:39then obviously it's clear that it's gone too far.
05:42Yeah, I think that's it.
05:43It's when people go sort of into themselves and sort of actively spoil the game for other
05:49people with their anger.
05:50That's where it's at.
05:50And also throwing clubs, I mean, I didn't throw it very far,
05:53but you know, throwing clubs is particularly dangerous if you don't necessarily have control
05:57over where it's going.
05:58Yeah, don't throw clubs.
06:00I think that is a pretty good, and that one very nearly snapped, I think,
06:03because it was doing quite expensive for you.
06:06Cool.
06:07Right, well, I'll repair my damage and we'll move on.
06:09And you can play your shot.
06:10I'll play mine.
06:11I'll help you out.
06:17Oh, nice shot.
06:19Okay, let's keep going.
06:22Um, Fergus, Fergus, where are you going?
06:24What?
06:25Look, you've left your divot here.
06:27Oh yeah.
06:27Come on, you're making another classic, etiquette mistake.
06:31You've got to replace your divots.
06:32Yeah, you're right.
06:33Because the last thing someone wants to do on the tee back there is hit a storming dry,
06:38straight down the middle, it rolls into your divot that you've left.
06:42You know, that's going to put them in a horrible mood, isn't it?
06:46It's not good etiquette.
06:48It's not.
06:48No.
06:49Another mistake.
06:49We're not doing too well in this hole.
06:51We're doing terrible, aren't we?
06:52But you've corrected it, which is all you can do.
06:54I'm right.
06:55Let's move on.
06:55Now we'll move on.
06:56Come on.
06:56Come on.
07:08Joel, why haven't you played?
07:10Well, I'm waiting for you.
07:10You're furthest away from the hole.
07:12There's a group behind there already waiting.
07:14I mean, we should be playing ready golf at this point.
07:16Oh, okay.
07:17Yeah, that's etiquette.
07:19Have I made another mistake?
07:21Rule 5.6, actually.
07:23It's not in the rules, but it does encourage, where possible, ready golf.
07:27Okay.
07:28Get on with it.
07:29Yeah.
07:29If you've got an option to play the shot, and I'm busy time with shoelaces or whatever.
07:34Yeah, yeah.
07:35Just play.
07:35No, that's right, because I was ready to play my shot.
07:37I knew the distance.
07:38I had the right club, and you're right.
07:40There are some people behind, and the last thing you want is people coming up behind you,
07:44hitting into you, and having to speed you up.
07:46So, yeah.
07:47No, you're right.
07:47I made a mistake there.
07:48Keep moving.
07:48All right, well, I'm ready, so I'll go.
07:50Oh, you're good now.
07:53Oh, go hard.
07:58That's the wrong club.
08:02I'm going to get my divot.
08:03I'm going to get my divot, Fergus.
08:04Good.
08:05Good etiquette.
08:07Look at that.
08:08It's a lovely divot.
08:12Oh, it looks tasty.
08:16Very good.
08:17Very good.
08:21So, you've played four, and you're on the green, and I've played three, but I'm in a bit of trouble.
08:29So, it's quite close.
08:30Bivot replacement.
08:42It's a little heavy, but it's not too far away.
08:50I'm just going to stop you there.
08:51I think you've forgotten something.
08:53What?
08:54Well, always repair your pitch marks.
08:57Oh, yeah.
08:57Look, just here.
08:59That's because I forgot, because it's rolled back down.
09:01Yeah, but general care of the course, you know, helping.
09:05Obviously, that's going to affect other people's putts.
09:08If you haven't repaired that, it's going to potentially cause their putts to bobble off line.
09:12It's a massive blunder, isn't it?
09:13I mean, I've already failed to replace a divot.
09:17Now I've failed to repair a pit.
09:18I think you might need to go and see a doctor for your memory.
09:22But, yeah, I agree.
09:23You know, you need to repair your pitch marks, don't you?
09:25You certainly do.
09:26And do it correctly as well.
09:27Yeah.
09:27Because the stats are not good in terms of the time that pitch marks take to repair.
09:32If you leave them for not very long, they can take weeks to repair versus days.
09:37Yeah, you're right.
09:37I just feel terrible.
09:38So, right.
09:40I've now got this for a five.
09:42Yeah, you've done it now.
09:42So, you're all good.
09:43Let's see if you can knock this in.
09:49Oh, goodness.
09:51Another etiquette mistake.
09:52Not hitting your putts hard enough.
09:54No.
09:54All right.
09:55This is for a par then.
09:57Would you like the flag out?
09:59No, leave it in for me, actually.
10:15Well done.
10:18Lovely.
10:22Okay.
10:23So, that was a half?
10:25A half?
10:26Wasn't it?
10:27See, now this is another etiquette mistake that actually annoys me quite a lot.
10:31Golfers not paying attention to what others in their group are doing.
10:35Yeah.
10:36The fact that you think we've got a half in this game means that you've not been paying attention
10:40to all the shots that I've been hitting down this hole.
10:43Wow.
10:43And over the course of a few holes, it's just going to get irritating, I think.
10:47So, have I won the hole?
10:48So, no.
10:48I got a five.
10:49You got a six.
10:50So, I won the hole.
10:51All right.
10:52Would you agree?
10:53Yeah, no.
10:54I should have been paying attention.
10:55I was so caught up in my own game.
10:57I think it was to do with not replacing the divots and not repairing my pitch.
11:00That's thrown you, is it?
11:01Is this throwing me?
11:02There's a lot to remember.
11:03So, you had a five and I had a six.
11:04Oh, well done.
11:06I won't show such bad etiquette as to not congratulate you on...
11:10Good game.
11:11Good game.
11:11Only one hole.
11:12But I think hopefully this video has highlighted some of the simple mistakes that golfers can make,
11:18especially if you're a beginner new to the game.
11:20Maybe you're not familiar with all the intricacies of golf and how you need to conduct yourself
11:24around the course.
11:25So, hopefully you've learned something.
11:26Would you agree that was useful?
11:27I hope so.
11:28I've learned something.
11:30Pay attention to your shots.
11:32And if you hit your ball in the rough again, I promise I'll look for it next time.
11:35Okay.
11:36So, there you go.
