00:02Spain has delayed the planned shutdown of the Almaraz nuclear power plant,
00:07keeping its two reactors running until 2030.
00:10The decision announced by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's government on Friday
00:14secures for two years the jobs of around 4,000 workers at the plant in the Extremadura region.
00:21The news has been welcomed by the citizens' platform Yes to Almaraz, Yes to the Future.
00:26We finally breathe and we see the light at the end of the tunnel.
00:32Almaraz is prepared to work for many years more,
00:36like her daughter in Northana, Virginia,
00:38which has already given the license to operate until 80 years old.
00:44Almaraz currently provides around 7% of Spain's electricity production.
00:50Unit 1 was scheduled to close in November 2027,
00:53according to an agreement reached in the context of a coalition government
00:57with left-wing political parties Podemos and Suma.
01:00But after the blackout that hit the Iberian Peninsula in April 2025,
01:05the role of nuclear power returned to the heart of the debate.
01:08Spain's Nuclear Safety Council confirmed last month
01:11the plant needs all safety conditions to operate until 2030.
01:14The extension of Almaraz operating life reignites the debate
01:19on the future of nuclear energy in Spain
01:21at a time when the wars in Ukraine and Iran are prompting a rethink
01:25in order to guarantee energy independence in the EU.
01:28All right.
