00:00Alex, we are by your favorite hotel, the Carlisle, which is also actually the Royals' favorite hotel.
00:05What a coincidence.
00:06I know, what a coincidence.
00:08It's a New York landmark.
00:09It's synonymous with class and elegance, so it's easy to see why Diana was fond of it.
00:19You've been.
00:20You've stayed.
00:21No, I haven't stayed.
00:22My parents stayed.
00:23I'm not, I don't fall within that tax bracket.
00:25Your parents stayed.
00:26That's still amazing.
00:28Yeah.
00:28I want to hear more about the visit.
00:29But let's talk about Diana's love, because there are some iconic images which we've seen, her coming out of the
00:35store.
00:36And lately, we have celebrities, you know, the Met Gala, and we always see incredible, you know, departures from here.
00:43We also had William.
00:44We've had Catherine also at this hotel.
00:46Tell me a bit about this.
00:48Yeah, well, like I said, this is a landmark here in New York.
00:51They're known for their discretion, so it's no surprise that they attract A-listers and royalty.
00:55Diana actually visited, like, it was her iconic solo trip to New York, right?
01:00Yes, it was her first solo trip to New York City in 1989.
01:04And then she returned multiple times throughout the 90s, and actually two months before her death in 1997.
01:09I'm not surprised.
01:10This city, I mean, these last three days have been incredible.
01:13I want to know more, though, about what's inside.
01:17What did your parents tell you?
01:19Well, I actually crashed and visited their room.
01:21But, I mean, it's just, the room is luxurious.
01:24Obviously, they did not stay in Diana's suite.
01:27They had their own little suite.
01:28But it was beautiful.
01:30My favorite spot here is Bemelman's Bar, which we're actually right outside of.
01:33The walls are decorated with Ludwig Bemelman's artwork, illustration, sorry.
01:38And I don't know if you're familiar with him, but, you know, he's the illustrator behind Madeline Book.
01:42Oh, wow.
01:43Yeah.
01:43So, it's very whimsical and cute in there.
01:46And then there's also the famous Cafe Carlisle, which hosts different, you know, performers.
01:51They have their residencies there.
01:52I've caught Steve's personal favorite, if you like, Father of the Bride.
01:56Oh, yes.
01:56I love his rendition of The Way You Look Tonight, so I had to see him there.
01:59But it's just, it's old school New York.
02:01It's just magical.
02:02Yes, it's a magical hotel.
02:03I love it.
02:03I can't wait till the day I am able to afford to stay here.
02:05Oh, one day.
02:06You say the Diana suite.
02:07That's what it's called now.
02:08We're just calling it that.
02:09I think they just call it that.
02:10But in that same suite, Michael Jackson stayed there.
02:13Yeah, he was a notable guest.
02:14Well, you were saying before how Diana met Michael Jackson, Steve Jobs, in an elevator at this hotel.
02:21Yes.
02:22I don't know if you've seen Always at the Carlisle.
02:24It's one of my personal...
02:25I was supposed to binge it on my way here, but I got caught up with the royal wedding.
02:30But I will on my way back.
02:31Can you get a pass?
02:31Yeah.
02:32Yeah, that is one of my favorite documentaries.
02:34And in it, Piers Morgan shares how he was told that that was one of the, yeah, a famous elevator
02:38ride here.
02:39It was Diana, Steve, and Michael.
02:41And Diana broke the silence by singing Michael's Beat It.
02:44Oh, my God.
02:45Can you imagine?
02:45I actually can imagine, because I think Diana had a really good sense of humor.
02:50So I can imagine her being cheeky in that way.
02:52You also spoke about JFK.
02:54Yes.
02:55Junior.
02:56Junior, yes.
02:57JFK Jr.
02:57The Carlisle is where he met with Diana in her suite.
03:00Very secret meeting.
03:01It was one summer.
03:02Yes.
03:03He wanted, JFK Jr. had his magazine, George, and he wanted to have her pose for the cover.
03:08So they had a meeting here.
03:09And actually, we're going to have a special guest at our live event here in New York City.
03:14She was JFK Jr.'s chief of staff.
03:16And she's going to tell us how that meeting came about.
03:19Yep.
03:19What he said about her after the fact.
03:21I can't wait.
03:22I know.
03:23I know.
03:23And this is like JFK Jr. summer year.
03:26Yes.
03:27Incredible.
03:27I feel like I want to have a cheeky little look inside.
03:31Do you?
03:32I do.
03:32Let's walk to the front.
03:33Shall we?
03:33Let's walk to the front of that hotel, at least.
03:35And let's see.
03:36Do you love it?
03:37Sunny.
03:37It's beautiful.
03:38Tell me more about the suite.
03:39How is a Diana suite?
03:41So it's a two-bedroom suite.
03:43I believe it spans 1,800 square feet.
03:46So it's not small.
03:47It's not small.
03:47By any means, there's a grand piano in there.
03:50And I mean, incredible views of the city.
03:52One bedroom?
03:53Two bedrooms.
03:54Two bedrooms.
03:55How many baths?
03:55Because I feel in America, there's like two bedrooms, seven bathrooms.
03:59Too fair.
03:59I don't know the answer to that question.
04:01We might have to book it.
04:03We might have to book it and find out.
04:04Of course.
04:05Tell me about William and Catherine's visit to New York.
04:08Yes.
04:09So during then, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's first joint visit to New York in 2014, they
04:14followed in Diana's footsteps and stayed here at the Carlisle.
04:16And I don't know if you remember, they actually posed for photos before entering on that chilly
04:20December night.
04:20I was going to say, it was December because she was definitely wearing a coat.
04:23Yes.
04:24Was she pregnant?
04:24She was pregnant.
04:26Yes.
04:26Yes.
04:27I remember.
04:28But they stayed here.
04:29And in the documentary I previously mentioned, apparently William was overheard saying that
04:32he had heard so much about the hotel over the years.
04:35Makes sense.
04:36Yeah.
04:36I'm sure he wanted to stay where his mother stayed.
04:38Well, so do I.
04:39Yeah.
04:39We must inquire about availability.
04:42Let's do it.
04:57We must inquire about availability.
05:06We must inquire about availability.
05:08We must inquire about availability.
05:11We must inquire about availability.
