00:00One of the first jobs in our new house was to sort out the wardrobes in our bedroom.
00:04The existing wardrobes were so shallow you couldn't get a hanger in properly and they were starting to fall apart.
00:10I started off by dismantling the current wardrobe, which revealed some interesting wallpaper that dates back to 1974.
00:16Once both wardrobes were removed, I then stripped off all the wallpaper, which revealed the original fireplace.
00:22Definitely something I'd love to reinstate in the future.
00:25Finally, I had the chance to get the tools out.
00:27The wardrobes needed to sit on a flat surface, so I made two shallow plinths, the same depth and widths
00:32of the wardrobes, using plywood.
00:34Once the wardrobe shells were in, I could not believe how almost perfectly they fit the alcoves.
00:39I packed any gaps between the wardrobe and the alcove with offcuts of plywood, filled it and sanded it to
00:45a smooth finish.
00:46In order for the top coat of paint to sit on the surfaces, I primed everything with a shellac primer.
00:52This dried really quickly and reduced the risk of the top coat from scratching or flaking off.
00:56Once the primer dried, I got the top coat of paint on with a little help from my apprentice.
01:01The shelves went in, which I was able to customise.
01:04I went for three drawers, a shoe rack, which comes out, and hanging space.
01:08Finally, I put on the metal hardware and they were done.
01:11I'm so happy with the way that they turned out.
01:14I really, really, really love the wardrobes.
