00:00Hi guys, I don't even know where to start Steph, are you okay?
00:04Yes, I survived Celebrity Bear Hunt and then slipped on the ice outside my house and snapped my arm in
00:08two, so yeah.
00:10She's being very kind of fun.
00:13No injuries in the bear pit?
00:15Yeah, it kind of matches like, you know, it's good luck.
00:19I mean what a show, I was loving all of you every second of it, it was brilliant.
00:24Let's start by what were your highlights in Celebrity Bear Hunt
00:28and what were the moments that you'd rather forget?
00:30I might know yours, Lawrence.
00:32Oh no, I love dying.
00:34It's incredible. In fact, I saw your great-grandmother, she says hi.
00:38She's very proud.
00:40No, the thing was, I came to her on the beach and I said that to someone and they were
00:42like, really?
00:44No, I'm just, literally, I'm just taking...
00:46He makes a joke, yeah.
00:47He makes a joke of everything.
00:49Because I was there when that happened and you were just cracking gags constantly and nobody knew whether to take
00:53it.
00:53It was difficult with an oxygen mask.
00:55I was taking the oxygen mask off and another thing.
00:59Do you remember when I carried on with the challenge and someone was running behind me with an oxygen cylinder?
01:06I don't know, what was your highlight?
01:08Oh, it's just, it's hard to like pinpoint a highlight.
01:11I think the whole thing was just an amazing experience.
01:13Nothing that you could ever...
01:14Exactly, I mean the thing was that, you know, like every night there was this incredible sunset.
01:18You know, every morning there was this amazing dawn.
01:20And watching the sharks and everything in the water.
01:22Yeah, absolutely.
01:23There were just moments where, I mean, even though you'd be right in the middle of the bear pit and
01:26you'd go, oh my God, look at that, look at that.
01:28I didn't do that.
01:29The whole way through, I was like, it's not going to get me, it's not going to get me.
01:32I got out of my watercolour set.
01:33No weight bear.
01:35Yeah.
01:36I think as well, it's just, I realise I'm an adrenaline junkie.
01:39Yeah.
01:40So there's things where I would be scared, but then I'd do it.
01:43And like when we jumped off the cliff in the water, I was like, oh, that was, I can still
01:46remember.
01:47And you know, we were like, we were both, we swam in the water.
01:49Yeah, a lot.
01:50And it was, it was a river that could have had anything and it was very murky, you know, like
01:55crocodiles, everything.
01:56We just did it, you know, focused that you want to just get through it, you know, and because you're
02:01in a team as well, because like we're all living together, which is a little bit like Big Brother.
02:05I have to say, you know, you're mic'd up 24 seven.
02:07I think it's more like a school trip.
02:09But you know, all that living together, like I've never, you can't prepare yourself for that.
02:12But then we're put into like challenges where we're against each other and then you're in the bear pit.
02:17Then when you're, you have to fend for yourself.
02:18So it's all, there's different elements to it.
02:20But I think the whole thing was a massive challenge that we all live to tell the tale, you know.
02:24Well, she was queen.
02:25I mean, she, she's so fit.
02:27Yeah, so fit.
02:28She's just so, and she was just doing everything and looking incredibly glamorous as well.
02:31Yes, I know.
02:31You look glamorous the whole way through.
02:33I know.
02:34Your camouflage was glamorous.
02:35It was just good.
02:36I think Bear actually said that you were formidable, Steph, and to undress, to make you your peril.
02:43Your peril, yeah.
02:43I mean, watching that back, were you just like, hmm, pleased?
02:47Yeah, totally.
02:48Because do you know what?
02:48It's really weird.
02:49Never have I sought the approval of a boy from Eaton.
02:52And this, but in there, you were like, you were, I was like, desperately wanting praise.
02:57Do you remember when this was there?
02:58I didn't know.
02:58He was a bit scared of you though.
03:00I don't know, I don't think he was.
03:01No, he was, he was, he was.
03:02He knew, he knew you could turn.
03:04Yeah, definitely.
03:04Well, I just think, when he used to go around, and at first, we, me and you never got the
03:10big praise where he'd go to the lads.
03:11You were a warrior.
03:12Yeah, I know, I know.
03:13And then he'd come to us and he'd go, you're really kind.
03:15Yeah, I know, exactly.
03:16I don't want to be kind.
03:17I want to be kind.
03:18You've got kind eyes.
03:19Yeah.
03:20No, I want to be a weaponized shopping trolley like everybody else.
03:23But we did, we really took, me and you were like both like, we're gonna get top praise
03:27off him.
03:27Yeah, no, we did, when he sat us down then, it was really nice then.
03:30Yeah.
03:30He gave us like really good advice and stuff as well.
03:32Yes.
03:33You totally listened to him.
03:34Yeah.
03:34In a way I never have to anyone.
03:36But it was hilarious because the thing is that, you know, he could have said anything
03:38and we would have done it.
03:39Yes.
03:40There was one point we said and you weren't even camouflaged.
03:41So we went, aha!
03:43And then, you know, straight into the camouflage.
03:45Yeah.
03:45And he turned up and he said, whoa, why do you look come as?
03:49Well, I mean, you got, I mean, sorry, Lawrence, but you two really proved your salt though
03:53because you got to the final.
03:54I mean, have you managed to keep that a secret?
03:56Or do you have a few people?
03:57Oh, I don't know, like, are we, oh, this isn't going out to love.
04:00No, no, no.
04:00Oh, so it's already out.
04:01Yeah.
04:02We don't want to create any spoilers either.
04:04Well, they're all out together, aren't they, tomorrow?
04:05They're all out home.
04:05Yeah, they're all out together, yeah.
04:07Yeah.
04:07I never even, never thought for a second did I think I'd ever get that far.
04:10I just was like, please don't.
04:11I did.
04:11I said you'd win.
04:13If you remember.
04:14Yeah, you did see that.
04:15I said, I put you down as a winner.
04:16Oh, did you?
04:17Really?
04:17Yeah.
04:18Yeah, but that said you.
04:20He said, what, me?
04:21No.
04:22No, it must be another Una.
04:23No, no, no, there is only one Una.
04:24And that's you.
04:24I just didn't want to go in round one.
04:26That was like, I always just said to myself, don't, please don't go in round one.
04:29It could have happened to any of us.
04:30Like, unfortunately, it was Leomi, and she's like a really fierce girl, but it just could
04:33have happened to any of us.
04:34Yeah.
04:34And that, that I genuinely thought I was going home in that first bit.
04:37Yeah.
04:38When we went into the lodge, I didn't even take any of it on, because I thought I'm not
04:41going to be staying, so I'm not going to look at anything properly.
04:42She didn't unpack.
04:43Oh, no.
04:44I was just like, I'm blatantly going home, because I was so rubbish in the first
04:47challenge.
04:47No, something happened to you when you went into that bear pit the first time, because
04:49when you were going into it, you were like, you gave me a hug and you were like, I'm
04:52going home.
04:53I'm going home.
04:53Well, you did.
04:54Something switched.
04:55You were like, I'm not going home.
04:56Yeah.
04:56She's really kind of, yeah.
04:58They emerged.
04:59They emerged from the first bear pit like different people.
05:02Yeah.
05:02Like whatever happened in there, I don't know what it was.
05:04They just, they got so like, just.
05:07Yeah.
05:07Pumped.
05:08Pumped, yeah.
05:09And petrified the rest of us.
05:10Well, I still, I still feel like I owe you an apology, because of course the bear pit challenge
05:15that you ended up doing was in my wee puddle.
05:17So.
05:17I dug a hole.
05:20I could have found something else.
05:21Do you remember when I bumped into you and you said, I can't find the wall?
05:23I said, follow your nose.
05:25You can smell the wee.
05:26That's when you know you're in the right place.
05:28It might help soften the ground a bit.
05:29Yeah.
05:30That's a good point.
05:31I think so.
05:32Yeah, exactly.
05:34What I love about the show is it's very family friendly.
05:37I know you mentioned your grandkids are really excited to watch it, Lauren.
05:40Yes.
05:40Are you looking forward to watching it with your kids?
05:42Yeah.
05:42I mean, your kids definitely, they were buzzing about you.
05:45Oh, they're so excited.
05:45Like they encouraged me to do it.
05:47They were like, you have to do it.
05:48They were like, it's so cool.
05:48It's Netflix and Bear Grylls, you know?
05:51That's because they were having a party when you were gone.
05:53Oh, yeah.
05:53They got on great because they were just really like supportive.
05:56And, you know, being away was tough.
05:58Being away from the kids was tough, you know?
06:00But having their support and encouragement really helped.
06:02Yeah.
06:03And I think with my little girl, so she was four when I was doing it.
06:07And she didn't quite understand, like, she doesn't know what I do.
06:11She doesn't really know what my job is.
06:12Yeah, sure.
06:13And so she understood the concept of a jungle.
06:16So I would constantly, before I went in, talk to her about Costa Rica
06:19and what a jungle looks like and the animals.
06:21So then that's what she is now really excited to see is,
06:25oh, what was the jungle like?
06:27So it's funny, isn't it, that how they kind of have grown with us
06:31and what you've told them, the stories you've told them about it.
06:33And so they must be looking forward to it.
06:35Yeah.
06:35They'll probably watch it and then go, oh, yes, we're a bit rubbish, like.
06:39Absolutely not.
06:39I mean, from the beginning to the end of it,
06:41when you're all in, like, full camouflage gear.
06:44Well, I think this is what, and actually for this kind of thing,
06:47for everyone to be so committed to, you know, actually doing it.
06:51Yeah.
06:51It was amazing.
06:51And we were talking about this earlier, about the fact that, you know,
06:54there was no one that said, no, I'm not going to do something.
06:56And, you know, even when people had problems and issues,
07:00actually everybody rallied around and helped them through that.
07:03And I think that's a real testimony to the way that this show works.
07:06It's about actually, it is about enriching people.
07:10It is about giving you a new sense of yourself.
07:13It's not about tearing you down.
07:15It's not about putting you in these terrible situations
07:17just to see how you'll crumble at all.
07:19Yeah.
07:20There's a real kind of sense, a commitment,
07:22particularly from Bear and his team, that it's all about, you know,
07:25giving us, and our very pampered lives, you know,
07:29giving us a view of how we can actually do a lot more.
07:33Yeah.
07:33I mean, it's what we've all said,
07:34that we thought we wouldn't be able to survive without our telephones
07:36and all this and all that, hair straighteners and whatever,
07:38and that was me.
07:39But actually, you can use rocks to straighten your hair,
07:42and it's fine.
07:43Take them in the sun.
07:43Exactly.
07:44And that's how the Flintstones did it after all, you know.
07:47What bits would you rather have forgotten about as well?
07:50Oh, I had a really bad Tommy bug.
07:52I had a really bad Tommy.
07:53Oh, yeah.
07:53I remember that bug that went around for about 24 hours,
07:55and it drained me so much because the biggest fear
07:58that the health and safety people had was to become dehydrated
08:01or sunstroke and all of that, like that can kill you.
08:03Like, oh, but potentially loads of things in there could kill you.
08:06That's one on the list.
08:07I was taking my Gatorade and my electrolytes and water and all of that,
08:11but it just, I couldn't keep anything in, and I got really weak.
08:14You guys look terrible.
08:14I was so weak, and I went into one of the bear pits,
08:17just had no energy at all, and I just, it was, I found that,
08:20I'd rather forget about that.
08:21Oh, no, that's bad.
08:23But you still got, the thing about you then is,
08:25she honestly was really ill.
08:26You looked so white.
08:27Oh, I was so sick.
08:28And you still went, the bear pit is so intense.
08:31Yeah.
08:31And you still went in it.
08:32Well, that was it.
08:33Yeah, I mean, you could have said no, and you didn't.
08:36And you wouldn't have been allowed to carry on if you'd said no,
08:37But actually, that's sort of, I think that happened with absolutely everybody.
08:41I think, you know, the one I feel sorry for is Boris,
08:43because, you know, he ended up not really being able to do anything at all,
08:46you know?
08:46And I think he really hated that.
08:48Yeah.
08:49We all pushed ourselves.
08:50He was like the godfather, you know?
08:52He was the magus.
08:53You'd go and seek his company.
08:54Yeah.
08:55He was like Rafiki.
08:56Tell me, what shall I do?
08:57And he'll, the man in the mirror.
08:58He'd consult the stones.
08:59Yeah.
09:00He's a great motivational speaker.
09:02Yeah, he is.
09:02Yeah.
09:03And from what you were saying earlier about it,
09:05not just being about the challenges, though, I think that's so true,
09:07because you guys got into some real deep and meaningful conversations.
09:10Yes.
09:11And on behalf of journalists everywhere, Steph, thank you.
09:13Because you loved asking those questions.
09:16I know, I know.
09:16I did what everyone said.
09:17Is that something that you really enjoyed, though?
09:19Yeah.
09:19Yes, because I am really nosy.
09:21Fundamentally, yes, it's my job, and I'm very lucky that I get paid to ask questions.
09:25But I just wanted desperately to know what everyone's life had been like, but not the
09:30kind of veneered version I'd read.
09:32I wanted to know, like, what had actually happened.
09:33And so, yeah, so I was just dead nosy.
09:36And I mean, there was a point where people might have been avoiding me because I was
09:39like, don't tell me what the...
09:41Yeah.
09:42Oh, my God, it's Rita Skeeter again.
09:43Yeah.
09:44But we all then had really nice chats.
09:47Yeah, we did.
09:47It was really nice.
09:47And I found it really interesting because I sat back and listened and I was really getting
09:51to know everyone.
09:52It was brilliant.
09:53Yeah.
09:53I mean, it was astonishing how little kind of celebiness went on.
09:57Yeah.
09:57I've said this before that, you know, actually, you know, a lot of the time in this kind
10:01of context, the first, you know, people will lose an entire day talking about agents.
10:05Yeah.
10:05And there was none of that.
10:06You know, it was none of the kind of, who are you with?
10:08And what are they like?
10:09Yeah.
10:09It was straight into, you know...
10:11Your grandkids and things like that.
10:13Yeah.
10:13And kind of like, you know, I really want to get on with the cooking.
10:15And, you know, Shelley was, you know, thinking about how she could, how she could wash up
10:19again.
10:20Shall I go and wash up the washing up?
10:22But even like, you know, you were telling us about the dynamics of your family and the
10:26fact you all live together, like grandkids, in-laws and everyone.
10:30And that was really, I was like, wow.
10:32So we were all just chatting about real life rather than telling you.
10:35Yeah.
10:36And how do you think this experience has changed you?
10:39I think that we all just pushed ourselves so much that we realised that, you know, we can
10:43we can do more than we think.
10:44Yes.
10:45Yeah.
10:45I mean, on a fundamental level, of course it is.
10:47And I think, again, that's, that's a big chunk of what it's about is, and that is what,
10:53that is Bear's mission, isn't it?
10:54Yeah.
10:54That is Bear's sort of evangelical mission, is to get kind of spoiled, sedentary, 21st century
11:00beings to understand that actually, it doesn't take much to re-engage with the reality
11:06of life on the ground.
11:07And it's fun.
11:08Yeah, all of that.
11:08I mean, I'll never forget just how incredibly useful khaki is.
11:12You know, it suits everyone.
11:13Everyone looks great in it.
11:14I mean, you know, I'm taking that with me.
11:17And you're all adrenaline junkies now as well.
11:19Yes.
11:20Completely.
11:21Yeah.
11:21That was the thing.
11:22I definitely took a ways.
11:23I loved the physical stuff more than I thought I would.
11:26Especially when I-
11:27It was so much fun, really.
11:28There were so many, like, really fun challenges.
11:29Like, they were, like, potentially, like, life-threatening, but, you know, at the same
11:33time-
11:33Yeah, but I mean, again, that's, you know, that's the point of it.
11:34That's actually also what makes it exciting, too.
11:37You could go to the, you know, go to an adventure playground and stand on top of a pole.
11:40But, you know, actually, this is not just even that.
11:42Because, yes, you could fall off, but then you could be stung by a scorpion.
11:45You could be eaten by a jaguar.
11:47Yeah.
11:47You could be, you know, gobbled up by a crocodile.
11:49You could be jumped on by a bear.
11:51A human bear.
11:52Yeah, no, exactly.
11:53He's quite hard as well.
11:55It's not an easy jump, is it?
11:56She's still relatively bruised.
11:57She had a real bear paw print on her thigh.
12:01Yeah, from the first time he caught me, his hand became a bruise on my leg, which I was
12:05dead proud of.
12:06I was like, look at this, I've got a bear, bear grills paw print.
12:08Yeah, exactly.
