00:00Ancient Coronation Traditions and Rituals
00:02The coronation ceremony sees the crowning of a new monarch
00:05and the traditions and rituals have remained the same in the UK for thousands of years.
00:10For the last nine centuries the coronation of a king or queen has taken place at Westminster Abbey,
00:15conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury.
00:18There are six basic phases to the coronation.
00:22Recognition
00:23The Archbishop of Canterbury will proclaim the monarch the undoubted king or queen
00:27and in the case of the next coronation ask the congregation and choir to say,
00:33God save King Charles.
00:35Coronation Oath
00:36The monarch will promise to reign according to law, exercise justice with mercy and maintain the Church of England.
00:42With the sword of state carried before them they will kiss the Bible and sign the oath.
00:47The things which I have here before promised I will perform and keep, so help me God.
00:51The Anointing
00:53The sovereign is then anointed, blessed and consecrated by the Archbishop of Canterbury.
00:58The king will remove his crimson robe and sit in King Edward's chair
01:02and the Archbishop will use an eagle shaped ampulla to anoint him in the form of a cross.
01:08Crowning
01:09After a blessing the monarch will be dressed in a spectacular gold robe
01:13and then be presented with the Sword of Offering and the Armils before finally receiving the sovereign's orb
01:19and having St. Edward's crown placed on their head.
01:22The Queen's Coronation
01:24The Queen Consort will then be crowned in a similar but simpler ceremony.
01:29For this ceremony Camilla will be anointed with Holy Oil just like Charles
01:33and have the Queen's ring placed on her hand and the crown on her head.
01:36The Homage
01:39This is the final part of the ceremony where King or Queen moves to the throne chair.
01:43Senior officials will then swear allegiance to the new crown by placing their hands on the monarch's knees and kissing
01:49their right hand.
01:50In 1953 Queen Elizabeth's husband Prince Philip was the first to pay homage to his wife.
01:56In a reported shake-up of the schedule for King Charles' coronation
01:59only William will be the one to take part in the tradition.
02:03After the service there is then a procession through the streets of London
02:06allowing as many people to see their newly crowned King or Queen.
