00:06When we first started, there were a lot of questions about the title.
00:10Kenya had an epiphany.
00:12He said he feels as if he went from raising a black family to a black-ish family.
00:16And a couple weeks later, Kenya said that's the title of our show, Black-ish.
00:21When we launched our pilot, we created a genuine ripple in the water.
00:25But I didn't know that our show was going to have the power and impact that it had.
00:31We hope that our show would be the phenomenon that it is today.
00:33And I believe we are.
00:36So the thing that makes Black-ish so universal is its family.
00:40And it's always a little messy.
00:46And it's in those messes that we get our message out.
00:50I ain't saying she a gold digger, but she ain't messing with the broke s***.
00:54Where did Jack get an idea to say a word like that in the first place?

01:02So we use comedy to explore subjects that are uncomfortable, sticky, and sharp.
01:08All black hair is beautiful.
01:10And in doing so, that allows dialogue to happen.
01:13And through dialogue, change is made.
01:17One of the things that we set out to do was to talk about some of the stuff that's hard
01:21to talk about.
01:22Particularly when it comes to race in America.
01:24You do know why America is so rich, right?
01:26Because we built this land for free.
01:29The Juneteenth episode was so important because it really did educate a lot of people about dark history that we
01:35have here in the United States.
01:38As a result of the episode, Apple put Juneteenth on their calendar.
01:43Juneteenth episode will forever be really special.
01:46It's great to be a part of something that's moving the needle in the culture.
