00:00Tell everybody about the film and it's called Rare Beasts. What's it all about?
00:05So Rare Beasts is about a woman, a mid-30s, single mom, professional woman,
00:15I guess trying to navigate modern love and modern feminism and this sort of,
00:25I don't know, habit or culture which I think we need to be a bit more honest about in terms
00:35of
00:35how people are faring. So since you mentioned honesty it's something then that very much comes
00:42from your heart, it's something that's very personal to you. I mean it was born out of
00:52a period of time where I was observing a lot of friends having this sort of experience in this
01:04crisis and yet the messaging was you can do it all, you can be super successful, have really
01:12meaningful relationships with your kids, very you know passionate love bears with your partner
01:18and actually all I could see was people sort of unraveling. I didn't see this sort of
01:26the success story of all of that and it felt like I wanted, well I just knew I wanted to
01:31talk
01:32well honestly about what that actually looks like. So yeah it comes from leaving my late 20s into my
01:41early 30s when I really did start to see that sort of fallout. It's fascinating talking about doing it all
01:49because on this film you are writer and director and leading actor and you know I know filmmakers,
01:57I know actors who when they're on the movie they are so in the zone, they are so focused and
02:02even as
02:03a friend I know to stay away because I know that for those few weeks, months they need to be
02:08focused.
02:09So tell me how it was with those three roles, writer, director, producer, dealing with your family,
02:16dealing with your friends, how did they cope when presumably you were totally focused on this project?
02:21Yeah, you know it's always the same, whenever I'm working my sort of personal life falls apart and that is,
02:32so I didn't see my kids a great deal although they'd often come to set and hang out a bit
02:39there but it
02:39was like snatched moments. I was also pregnant so about to have my third child so yeah I would say
02:50it was
02:51it was a pretty full-on experience and one that meant I didn't have a life beyond set really. I
03:03mean
03:03that's very true of acting but this was the whole new level and actually being in it I think on
03:08reflection was a real oversight because it um I more than anything I just wanted to sit back and be
03:18with the actors as opposed to being in like three different head spaces um at any one given moment
03:25um and I just yeah I did I didn't feel like I could enjoy it as much as I would
03:31have liked to
03:32um in terms of the direct directing.
