00:00Hi everyone, we are here today with Kimberley Walsh, singer, dancer, actress and now children's clothing range designer.
00:08Tell us about this latest project you've been working on.
00:11Yes, so Kimber Kids is a kids wear brand that I've created with my brother.
00:16My brother already designs, manufactures clothing and so I managed to twist his arm into doing a little project with
00:23me.
00:24And yeah, we've developed a whole range of girls wear boys wear from 3 to 12 years, so quite a
00:30broad range.
00:31And it's available at Next Online or through our own website which is kimberkidsclothing.com.
00:38And yeah, we're launched and it's all happening, it's really exciting.
00:42And we've got some of the items from the range behind us.
00:45Now, I think the colours are really nice to talk about first.
00:48Yeah, so the colour palette was a big part of it.
00:50You know, you go through about a million Pantone colours to decide on that colour palette.
00:55And it's really important for me that there was a thread running through girls and boys wear.
01:01And that we've got, you know, some of the nude pinky tones in the boys wear as well as in
01:05the girls wear.
01:06So yeah, we've just pushed it out, pushed the boat out a little bit on the colour palette.
01:10And also just trying to come up with some really vibrant prints that we know will make a little bit
01:15of a statement.
01:15So we've obviously got like the colour camo, this like autumnal little print with all the little details which I
01:24love.
01:25And then our signature kind of thing is the K, the K jumpers.
01:30Just to make sure everybody knows what they're wearing.
01:35And you've designed the dresses with big pockets in.
01:40There's a whole campaign about why girls need pockets.
01:43Did you notice that or do you have any other pet peeves with kids' clothing that inform the range at
01:47all?
01:49In creating the range, because obviously I did this with my brother who's very experienced in most of this, you
01:56know, this area already.
01:58But my big issue was whether things were going to be comfortable, easy to wear, which was a whole new
02:04thing for him.
02:05Like I was like, I would not put my child in it if it's got 10 buttons to fasten up,
02:09forget it.
02:09It'll just stay in the bottom of the drawer and I'll never ever use it.
02:11So you will notice that every item is really easy to pull on.
02:16Kids can dress themselves, comfortable.
02:19My kids love pockets.
02:21My boys love pockets mainly to put weapons in.
02:23But I'm a few of the girls about things they want to put in there as well.
02:27So we do have the lovely pockets on the jumper dresses.
02:30So yeah, it's all really comfortable and easy to wear.
02:33Jersey, like kids want to play, don't they?
02:35And they want to be comfy.
02:36So you've got like a mum's eye view.
02:38I've got a very mum view on the comfort stakes.
02:41So I'm looking out for the mums out there as well.
02:43Now, so obviously you do have the two boys, Bobby and...
02:46Cole.
02:47Bobby and Cole.
02:48Bobby is three.
02:49He's just turned four.
02:51Well, I'm sure he would have corrected me as well.
02:53Four, exactly.
02:54He's very sure that he's four now.
02:56And Cole's one and a half.
02:58He'll be two in December actually.
02:59So yeah, I've got my hands full.
03:01And I imagine it must be fun dressing them up.
03:05But also they must test you a little bit in the fashion.
03:08Because can they keep anything clean?
03:10They don't keep anything clean, which is a nightmare.
03:12Because I feel like I spend more on like vanish and stain removal products than I do on their actual
03:18clothes these days.
03:19Well, because I've got my own range, it's a bit easier.
03:22But you do literally constantly trying to get stains out of their clothes.
03:26But then the kids have to be kids, don't they?
03:29And they're like, you know, collecting sticks and doing what boys do.
03:33So I've got to let them live a little.
03:35That's why the camo print though is really good.
03:38Because nothing shows.
03:39Very clever.
03:40It's really, really good.
03:41Like there's a couple of, like a couple of his camo tops have got little stains on.
03:44But I'm like, we're actually getting away with it because it just blends in.
03:47It's fine.
03:48And so you took a little bit of inspiration from the things that they liked wearing.
03:52Did you let them try out the range when you were like shortlisting?
03:57Yeah, no, me and my brother had them in with us for some of the sort of sampling process.
04:03Just to see what kind of things they liked, what they went towards.
04:07And actually, like he does go and choose the items to wear himself.
04:12Which is a really good sign because he does not wear what I tell him.
04:16Like he's got a very strong opinion on what he's going to wear.
04:19What style his jeans should be.
04:21Everything.
04:21So I'm taking that as the biggest compliment that we could have to be honest.
04:25The fact that Bobby's actually choosing to wear it.
04:27Yeah, he's got his own eye for it.
04:28Yeah.
04:29Well, on that note, I mean, I got to pick some of my own outfits.
04:32And some of them were very questionable.
04:34You know, travelling cross-Atlantic flights with a tiara on the whole time.
04:37So what's the most outlandish thing Bobby, I suppose, is that older one he's chosen to go out in?
04:44Do you know what?
04:45It's more what he takes out with him in his pockets.
04:47It's like he fills his pockets full of like Lego weapons, transformers.
04:53I'm like, no, you can't walk down the street like that.
04:56You look like you're about to fall down with everything that you've got in there.
04:59And so constantly we leave somebody's house and he's like stolen something.
05:03I'm like, what is that?
05:05And he just like collects people's toys in all the different houses that we go to.
05:10And he always manages to wangle something in his pocket.
05:13So the supermarket aisles must be tricky.
05:15Yeah, I have to really watch him.
05:18I'm very, very aware of that.
05:20I watch him in public.
05:21And what about any, you know, celebrity friends?
05:24Did you get any feedback from them at all?
05:25Yeah, no, I've sent a few pieces to lots of friends.
05:30Denise loves the bits that I sent for Betsy.
05:32Denise Van Outen.
05:33So that was good because she's like age seven.
05:36So that's quite a good marker for me because my kids are not that old yet.
05:41So I'm trying to get some bits made up for Bear and Cole to wear because they're too little.
05:46Which is really annoying because Cole keeps picking them up and trying to put them on.
05:50And Cheryl's like, can you send me some bits?
05:52I'm like, oh, it's too small.
05:54Although Bear's bigger than Cole, so he'll be getting into them before, which is good.
05:58So yeah, people's response has been really good, actually.
06:01They seem to really like it.
06:02It's just fun and colourful.
06:06Now, that's lucky and lovely that you were able to send Denise some girls' clothes because you're a house full
06:11of boys.
06:11Do you ever pine to dress up a little girl?
06:13Do you know what?
06:14I've never had that thing.
06:16Like, I know loads of people that do have that real, like, burning desire to dress a girl.
06:22Yeah, sequins and pink.
06:23I'm not really that girl.
06:25It's handy, really, because I've got two boys.
06:27Because I have always wanted, like, a cool little boy that I could dress, like, always.
06:32So now I'm getting my dream, really, to be able to dress a boy how I want.
06:36Like, I'm wanting it to be cold enough to put Bobby in this.
06:40So this, like, cute little camo detail.
06:44But when you team it with, like, the full-on camo top, it just looks so cool.
06:48It's too hot.
06:49Yeah, bring on autumn, winter.
06:50I'm ready.
06:51I can actually get him in them and see it, finally.
06:54Yeah, and us, too, you know, boots, weather, I'm over all the maintenance.
06:59It's lovely, but, you know, yeah, we need autumn, winter.
07:01Yeah.
07:02Now, do you hang on to clothes?
07:04Bobby is four, as I've learned.
07:07And so is there anything that you're hanging on to from him as a hand-me-down to Cole at
07:13all?
07:13Yeah, Cole's literally in hand-me-downs all the time.
07:16Oh, I don't.
07:16Is that really bad?
07:17No.
07:17But when you've got two boys and they're that close together,
07:19it just seems silly to buy more.
07:24And actually, Bobby's already grown out of his three to four Kimber kids.
07:28And I'm already thinking it won't be long before he can kind of take over and start wearing those.
07:34But, yeah, he does get a lot of hand-me-downs.
07:37I think it's good.
07:40Well, I mean, Cole's going to benefit from this in two to three years.
07:42Yeah, exactly.
07:43He's definitely going to benefit massively.
07:45Yeah.
07:45And they both suit, like, the same colours as well.
07:48Like, I think sometimes they don't suit the same things.
07:51But because their skin tones and stuff, they can literally wear any colour.
07:54So it's good.
07:56I mean, obviously, things that get ruined, like, I don't put him in, like, threadbare clothing.
08:01But a lot of it is definitely hand-me-downs.
08:03Yeah.
08:04And I know that, as you said, Bobby's quite driven with his sense of style already.
08:08But do you like to – will you miss the matchy-matchy days when you can kind of put them
08:13in something really similar?
08:15They like twinning.
08:16They do.
08:16They actually like it.
08:17And so I kind of embrace it while I can.
08:20And, like, I'll often say to him, just because I like twinning them, but I think, oh, is that a
08:25bit annoying?
08:26Because I know when I was growing up, my sister used to get so annoyed when I wore exactly the
08:30same as her.
08:31Yeah.
08:31She'd get, like, in a mood with my mum for buying us the same.
08:33So I'm aware of that.
08:35Yeah.
08:35Because she made it quite clear that she wasn't happy about it.
08:38Really cramping her style.
08:39Yeah.
08:39I keep saying to Bobby, do you want to wear the same?
08:42Yeah.
08:43Like, you've got it.
08:43But he actually quite likes it.
08:45Yeah.
08:45Which is cute at the moment.
08:46That is cute.
08:47Is he quite protective of his little brother?
08:49He's so protective.
08:51Like, they fight a lot at home.
08:55Like, they're either all over each other, kissing each other, or fighting.
08:58Yeah.
08:58But if anyone, even so much as says a word or touches him, he's straight over.
09:05That's my little brother.
09:06Yeah.
09:06What are you doing?
09:07And I'm like, whoa, you've definitely got a protector there.
09:11Oh, Cole's in good hands for the future.
09:14And when it comes to your own wardrobe, I mean, I would like access to it.
09:20Come on, across Girls Aloud and Strictly and everything.
09:22Like, you've worn so many fabulous, fabulous outfits.
09:26Where are you at in your kind of fashion sense now?
09:29So I think I've always had quite a classic style.
09:32I think I've gone, the only development that's sort of happened over the last sort of few
09:37years after having children is that I kind of lean slightly away from the bodycon stuff
09:42that I used to wear loads of for a period of time, just because I'm a little bit more
09:46self-conscious of the old mum tum and stuff.
09:49So I tend to go for more like a wrap thing or a jumpsuit that's not quite so tight.
09:55But I'm getting so into that whole thing now that I feel like that's kind of my next natural
10:00venture is to start trying to do some women's wear as well.
10:03Because I feel like I kind of know exactly what I want to do.
10:06Well, I would fully subscribe to that because I have to say when I was watching you in this
10:10sort of Girls Aloud years, for me, you were like a huge role model because up there with
10:15a traditional or amazing hourglass figure, you know, next level hourglass figure.
10:22So how was that for you in a sort of sphere or a world where obviously a lot of people
10:27are put
10:28into, you know, certain categories? Was that something that you were aware of or had any
10:33positive, negative things to it?
10:35I was always labelled as the curvy one, which is fine because I am curvy.
10:40And I just embraced it really. And I just tried to always find an outfit that would work for me
10:45alongside the other girls where I would feel like I was in keeping with them.
10:49But certain times, if I didn't feel like what they were going to wear would suit my figure,
10:54I would just find a way around it. And I think that's what comes with age and getting older.
10:58You start to work out what suits your body shape and actually that everybody's got a good point.
11:04And it's just finding that that shape. And so now I think I just know what shapes to wear.
11:10So I could look forward in your future range to lots of nipped in ways.
11:14And where are the jeans, please, that fit people that have a size, like a small waist,
11:19a big bum, big thighs?
11:20I know, the jury's still out on that because I'm constantly searching and then I find one pair
11:24and they always get discontinued.
11:27So I literally wear them into the ground. I'm like, no, it's so hard.
11:31Yeah. OK, well, I will be watching this space and we will be.
11:34It will. It will work for you.
11:36So let's end with maybe your sort of highlight from this sort of season of the range.
11:41You know, what's your favourite piece?
11:44I think our coloured camo is my favourite piece just because it's so eye-catching
11:48and it's such a cool look for boys.
11:50And also the K sweats, obviously, because I want one myself.
11:55You should get one.
11:56I need a few.
11:58And so many mums keep saying to me, can you not do them in adult size?
12:01So we might get to that at some point.
12:03But yeah, this is a really, really strong print for us.
