00:05When you're a big movie star, pop sensation or supermodel, life can be very stressful.
00:11So it's no surprise many A-listers like Miley Cyrus, Kristen Bell, Giselle Bundchen and power couple Sofia Vergara and
00:19Joe Manganiello, to name just a few, turn to meditation to get away from it all for a bit.
00:24Meditation has been around for thousands of years in Eastern philosophy, but it's been really, really absorbed into mainstream Western
00:32society now.
00:34And nowhere is that more prevalent than in Hollywood and in California.
00:39Meditation basically is the mental exercise of regulating attention.
00:44Although it's often done in groups, it's an individual practice.
00:49And it's quite simple to do.
00:51You sit comfortably and quietly with your eyes closed and focus your attention on a single object, internal or external.
00:59Even though it originates from India, meditation is now very much integrated into Western culture.
01:04Ironically, in Eastern culture, meditation is less prevalent now.
01:10We've gone a complete switch.
01:11If you go to India now, you see the middle classes are not meditating.
01:15They're working in tech and they're coming, adopting fast food and Western lifestyles.
01:21And here in the West, we've adopted meditation.
01:25I think the pace of life that so many people are leading are so hectic, so incessant.
01:30We're on technology constantly.
01:32We're running, running, running and we never stop.
01:33And meditation is one way of finding a peace and a mindfulness in the moment that you can stop for
01:41five minutes, meditate, bring yourself back into the moment, into awareness and continue your day.
01:49While there are many different forms and techniques of meditation, one of the most popular among celebrities is the transcendental
01:56technique, which involves the use of a mantra, a word or short phrase that you repeat silently, and is practiced
02:02for 15 to 20 minutes twice per day.
02:06The mantra is said to be a vehicle that allows the individual's attention to travel to a less active, quieter
02:12style of mental functioning.
02:13It was actually celebrities like Shirley MacLaine and Richard Gere who were the original big fans of meditation in Hollywood.
02:22But it really crossed over and became a lot more widespread.
02:25And today you've got people like Oprah Winfrey, Katy Perry, and they're huge fans of meditation.
02:31In fact, Katy Perry says that she starts her day with 20 minutes of transcendental meditation every day.
02:38Meditation has become an essential tool in the need to unplug from our busy lives and maintain a healthy mindset.
02:45A-listers swear by it.
02:47And if you want to give it a go, it's really easy.
02:50All you need is a quiet place where you won't be disturbed.
02:53Oh, and don't forget to turn off your phone.
02:55Oh, and don't forget to turn off your phone.
02:56Oh, and don't forget to turn off your phone.
