00:01Christopher Nolan's new World War II drama Dunkirk stars several rising young stars such as Fionn Whitehead, Barry Keegan, Jack
00:09Lowden and Tom Glyn Carney.
00:11But there's also an actor making his feature film debut despite already being one of the most famous faces on
00:16the planet, former One Directioner Harry Styles.
00:19In this exclusive interview, Nolan tells us why he selected the singer for the movie.
00:23You know, my job as a filmmaker is to sort of see potential in people, the people who audition.
00:29And Harry auditioned like everybody else and, you know, really earned his seat at the table.
00:34And what I saw in him is a great potential movie to him.
00:41He's capable of projecting tremendous truth and really that's what you look for in an actor.
00:46I think his performance in the film is genuinely remarkable and I'm excited for people to see it.
00:51You might expect that having a rock star in the movie would make filming that much harder.
00:55But Nolan says it's not the case.
00:57You know, it's funny, a lot of people ask me about this stuff as if the people in my other
01:01films weren't famous and didn't have to deal with that.
01:03But, you know, the truth is we're very used to dealing with very famous people and, you know, huge stars.
01:09And so the mechanism of filming here accommodates that quite, quite well.
01:14The acclaimed director also opened up about what drew him to make the epic tale in the first place.
01:19Well, you're looking for something that hasn't been done before by you or anybody else.
01:25Something you can bring to the cultural conversation.
01:28You know, as a storyteller you're really looking for a gap.
01:31You're looking for a film that should have been made that never was.
01:34And Dunkirk is one of the great stories of human history.
01:37It's never been told in modern movies.
01:40So for me as a filmmaker it seemed like a great opportunity to bring a story to an audience who
01:46perhaps aren't that familiar with it.
01:48For British people they're very familiar with it but perhaps don't know the detail of it and haven't had a
01:53rich sort of full colour IMAX version of this story.
01:57And also for me as a filmmaker it's something I've never done before.
02:00I've never worked on a historical event.
02:03I never worked, you know, in this period with these kind of planes and boats and, you know, on this
02:12sort of suspense thriller approach to telling this war story.
02:16I mean, I found it a very exciting challenge.
02:17Nolan fans are always anxiously awaiting his next film.
02:21But he actually isn't even thinking about that yet.
02:24You know, to be honest I'm not.
02:25I do one thing at a time and I commit to one film and I bury myself in it.
02:29And for me it's not really finished.
02:31The process isn't finished until it goes to the audience.
02:33And that's what's happening over the next couple of weeks.
02:36And then it'll be done and I'll go on holiday and think about what's next.
02:39Dunkirk will be landing in cinemas on the 21st of July.
02:43You can practically see it from here.
02:45What?
02:45Whom?
