00:03It's an interesting story to be told in interesting times because in seven years time when a certain
00:09president is no longer president, how will people in America feel about how did they
00:13stand up or did they not stand up? Very similar.
00:16Or Syria, I said.
00:18Or Syria, yeah, exactly.
00:19You know.
00:20It's interesting.
00:20It really resonates, doesn't it?
00:22Yeah, it really does right now.
00:23And community resonates and courage and hope and love and they're all things, they're
00:27human nature subjects that just resonate right now.
00:31Yeah.
00:32And it's a very, it's obviously a very heavy film.
00:35Is there a scene in particular that stayed with you?
00:38I know you said that you were angry about the train scene.
00:41You felt very angry after that filming.
00:42Yeah, it was.
00:43Yeah, I went home feeling very strange.
00:45I don't have a lot of experience, you know, being on set.
00:48You know, I've met a few, a couple of films.
00:51So, you know, it blew my mind, though, when I came off set from that particular.
00:56There was two scenes in particular that really messed with my head, actually, because you
01:00immerse yourself in that situation and you believe that you're there.
01:03You have to.
01:04So, I came away feeling very sad and very negative and very dark from, especially that
01:09scene where, which actually happened.
01:11It's hard to believe that in a French train station or an area in France that the two trains
01:17met.
01:18Well, I was on, I was, we told it slightly different in the film in the sense I was actually
01:23on a train.
01:24My character, Harold, was on a train and Lou was on a train.
01:26But not only did they meet.
01:27The doors opened.
01:28The doors opened.
01:29And there they were opposite.
01:29You couldn't write that as fiction and yet it happened.
01:33It was quite extraordinary.
01:34Extraordinary.
01:35Yeah.
01:35Unbelievable.
01:36I was incredibly moving.
01:38And that, for me, that was very, I went home and Stormwell, my wife was like,
01:42are you all right?
01:43And I wasn't.
01:44It took me a day, maybe more, to get over that, that feeling.
01:48You know?
01:49Yeah.
01:49Did she ever visit you on set?
01:51I feel like it's, it would be.
01:53Oh, yeah.
01:53We had, we had our, you know, family and friends came to visit us.
01:57Actually, some of the, um, La Drulenec, the Gould family, they actually, was it grandchildren?
02:02The grandchildren came down.
02:03It was Lucy Louisa's great granddaughter.
02:06Was it her great granddaughter?
02:07Great granddaughter, that's right.
02:08And she then brought her own children and son.
02:10Yeah.
02:11Yeah.
02:11So, yeah, it was very much a family environment in that regard.
02:14Yeah.

02:15And, obviously, because it is so, it's very intense.
02:18How did you, sort of, relieve the tension offset?
02:21Well, we had John Hanna and Amanda Abbott.
02:23Oh, my God.
02:23Those two.
02:25They're so brilliant.
02:26Yeah.
02:26I had to duck out sometimes, because there are some times when I can't flip from facile
02:31to deep grief, so I had to just go and sit quietly and feel like a party pooper.
02:35But John is an incredibly funny man, and Amanda's a very funny woman.
02:39They really are.
02:40Yeah.
02:40And Joanna David as well.
02:42Yeah.
02:43We had some funny characters.
02:44Yeah.
02:45And how was Julian as well?
02:47Oh, Julian's wonderful.
02:48He's a natural screen actor.
02:50He's a very serious actor.
02:51He's a beautiful, beautiful human being.
02:54And he's a very generous actor.
02:56And, you know, acting is all about reacting.
02:57It's about listening.
02:59And he does that.
03:00And magic happens.
03:01Yeah.
03:02And Ronan, you had singing lessons with him?
03:04Was that right?
03:05Or...?
03:05Well, no, I didn't.
03:07Or you gave him singing lessons.
03:07Well, yeah.
03:08We were playing around.
03:09We both had to do this Russian song.
03:12Not me.
03:13That's Julian.

03:15I had to sing it as well.
03:16Julian had a secret yen to be on stage with Ronan as a pop star.
03:20Oh, yeah.
03:20He definitely wanted to be you.

03:23No, he's, like Jenny said, he's an incredible actor.
03:26And, you know, he immersed himself in that.
03:29We had to sit with a Russian musician and learn this song because that's all in the pronunciation,
03:36you know, which is not easy.
03:37And so we worked together on that, Julian and I.
03:39And it was great.
03:41It was a real eye-opener for me, actually.
03:42I enjoyed it.
03:43Yeah.
03:44Was it difficult learning?
03:45It is.
03:46Yeah.
03:46Because you can say something very, well, with just the slightest tone in the language
03:53that you've got to be careful with.
03:54So it was...
03:55You could have said something really good.
03:56I could have insulted somebody.
03:58Exactly.
03:58So I had to be really careful.

04:01Sounds like a bit like Mandarin, how they've got four tones and you've...
04:03There are parts like that, yeah.
04:05I can mean different things.
04:06And were you nervous at all?
04:07I know you've done Goddess already, so it wasn't quite your film debut, but...
04:12Yeah.
04:12Well, it was here.
04:14So it is...
04:14Yeah, I was very nervous.
04:16But, you know, the cast, the whole team, production, the crew made me feel very comfortable.
04:20And...
04:21But you're a veteran of musicals anyway, of videos and stuff.
04:24Yeah.
04:25So you've been in front of the camera.
04:26I've been on sets, but yeah, I mean...
04:27He's a natural.
04:28Trust me, he's a natural.
04:29The guys were great.
04:30I loved it.
04:31You know, the thing is though, I didn't arrive with any sort of ego or anyone.
04:34I just, you know, I'm one of the cast, I'm one of the team and that's the way everyone
04:37treated me and that's the way it should be and that made it easier.
04:40I think sometimes people bring baggage and bring, you know, egos and that can complicate
04:44situations like that.
04:45And also motherhood and family are definitely key elements in the film.
04:50A question about Storm, is she looking forward to being a first time mum?
04:54Absolutely.
04:55And what kind of mum do you think she'll be?
04:56She's going to be an incredible mother.
04:57She's a real earth mother, you know.
04:59She's a very grounded woman, loves, loves, you know, she's excited about being a mother,
05:05you know, and she has that natural ability and connection.
05:09I'm very excited to see her, you know, in that situation.
05:13We're over the moon.
05:14We cannot wait.

05:15And the kids must be happy as well.
