00:05I'm here at a village called Nere Kapuro in the north of India.
00:09And this is a village that has yet to have the influence of any of the work that WaterAid can
00:14offer.
00:15There's an awful lot of stagnant water.
00:18Mothers are having to carry their children as well as their pails of water
00:23through manure-entrenched swamps almost.
00:28The water coming out of this pump looks pretty clean,
00:30but actually because of where it's sitting, i.e. in a load of effluent,
00:36it's not actually coming out clean.
00:38There is faecal contamination in the water before it comes to the surface.

00:44Both the ladies I spoke to were aware of the issues to do with sanitation and hygiene and water supply.
01:09Some of this is from mosquito bites and some is just a reaction to something in the water here.
01:20Pradeep was one of the lads at the school and showed me where he goes to the loo,
01:25which is about a 50-60 meter walk out into the fields.
01:28And that means the level of sanitation is pretty poor.
01:31So I felt for him.
01:33And he's a keen young student and he says that sometimes he's off sick with tummy bugs.
01:38One of the sources of his problem is the water.
01:41It makes me realise how water is so fundamental to everything we do.
01:47Next up is Mahadevpura, a community where water aid has worked in the past.
01:59This school has 100% attendance because you're not having kids who are missing school through illness.
02:05You've got kids who are able to teach their own families about the importance of hygiene
02:09through the chance that they learn.
02:12They understand that there is a cycle, that there is a link between hygiene and sanitation
02:19and provision of clean water.
02:25The difference between Narikapura and this village is quite startling and quite plain to see.
02:30In this village you've got very few cases of illness here.
02:34There's a sense of discipline about the way they're doing things.
02:37There's no open defecation.
02:41The water pumps are extremely active and so they're able to irrigate some of the crops nearby.
02:47Water Aid left in about 2008 and since then the village has sort of gone from strength to strength.
02:52I think that's Water Aid's legacy.
02:53It hands over to the community that it's trying to serve.
02:57My family, the mailing, the street development and walks away.
