00:08yeah I think the world of ballet really does it is sort of the perfect setting for this kind of
00:16film because it's it is very insular and it is something that's very light and beautiful and
00:26delicate on top and very gruesome and grueling and and painful underneath so it has this sort of
00:34duality and and it also is very much a world and where women are the stars but they're also
00:42sort of subjugated I mean most of the structures are created by men and men try and keep the women
00:50as little girls and it's it's it's got this sort of doll-like aspect to it yeah I've heard a
01:04lot of
01:04people say that you know they're not ballet fans but in this film they love ballet and if ballet
01:09were like this they would go all the time and I think that's partly you know Benjamin Millepea's
01:15choreography that's so vibrant and unique and also partly the story of the movie which is just very
01:23exciting that adds a lot of you know sort of thrills to to an art that can sometimes be very
01:31sort of
01:33placid and and and it's funny because we we spoke about the film ten years ago and the storyline is
01:49almost exactly what he described to me even though there was no script at the time he just sort of
01:53describes the story to me but the the tone of the movie was very unexpected I thought it was much
02:01more
02:01documentary style because of the handheld cameras and it's obviously very stylized and and genre
02:18yeah you definitely see stage mothers I think you know it's very rare that children actually say I
02:27want to do I want to go work which is something that I personally did so I understand not every
02:34child who's working is pushed by a stage mother but I think a lot of kids are into ballet into
02:40you know
02:41acting into other areas and you know you many people wind up being very grateful for it because you know
02:49ballet if you don't start when you're three or four years old you'll never be a star so you would
02:55never
02:56have that opportunity even if your parents didn't put you into it yeah well I I danced ballet until I
03:10was 12 or 13 when I was little and then I started training for this film when I was 27
03:16so I like a 15
03:17year gap so it was almost like starting from scratch I think I had I had relatively good coordination and
03:25understanding of music like I could really hear the music and beats and stuff that wasn't an issue for
03:32me but everything else was so it was it was really intense you know we did five to eight hours
03:38a day for
03:39a year before a year before the film and it was it was very extreme yeah I think it really
03:53actually
03:54did it was one of the first jobs where I actually did remember things that I learned in school because
03:59you really see the sort of obsessive compulsive nature of dancers and the almost religious rituals
04:05they go through with breaking in their new shoes and doing the same bar every day and and also the
04:11the sort of dissociation she experiences where she sees herself outside of her body you know that's very
04:20common of sort of abused women to sort of step outside of themselves anyway it was it was definitely helpful
04:29you
