I had written and recorded the song "Come & Go" in 1999 as a 4-track acoustic demo on tape. I always heard it in my head as a piano song but never had access to a piano and so had to wait several years before making that a reality. In between those years I decided to make this song the feature of the 'Head Above Water' EP.

It was one of the first songs I recorded for the EP and so I had it finished early on in 2003. I began sending copies of it away both on CD via the mail and to various places online in MP3 format.

Looking at some old notes recently, I found some of the details...

This version of "Come & Go" made the playlist of Popscene on Stadsomroep Arnhem in Netherlands on the 18th Feb 2003.

A few days later on the 21st Feb 2003, it received airplay on Bernie Quayle's Late Night Show on Manx Radio. Manx Radio is a national commercial radio station for the Isle Of Man. I remember this feeling like a big deal at the time as it was played either before or after a Queen song. Bernie told me later that he had several calls from listeners asking where they could buy it. Unfortunately at that time it was not so easy to get independent music available in mainstream places and since the only place I had it for sale was some small-scale MP3 site he told me he couldn't continue playing it. It was much harder to have your music for sale on Amazon, iTunes, etc and there was no Spotify. You literally had to somehow get CD's produced and stocked by one of the physical retailers.

Also, on this day I received interest from the Music Director of Radio Nationaal, Ron Sterrenburg. I had submitted the song to his radio station and although he wasn't able to play it on there he soon contacted me to tell me how wonderful he thought the song was. He called on 27th Feb 2003 to discuss in more detail his plans for the song, with talk of me going down to London to record it in a proper studio. This resulted in him eventually meeting me in person during the spring of 2003 in Glasgow. After this meeting with his partner/girlfriend his enthusiasm suddenly disappeared and he went cold on me. It wasn't the first nor the last time I'd experienced this.

Later on as winter 2003 approached, I was contacted out of the blue again, this time by a pop artist from Bosnia & Herzegovina. Somehow he had found my website and heard some of the tracks from 'Head Above Water' and showed interest in recording them for an album he was working on. I was bemused by this request because on listening to his work it was much more pop-oriented than my stuff and I couldn't see how my songs would fit his style. However, I agreed but soon he too disappeared without a trace! He did make an appearance on the Eurovision Song Contest in 2004 representing his country and I think it's safe to say it was a lucky miss!

This same year of 2003 I was also contacted by a young Chinese independent journalist by the name of Sun Chen, who told me he
