00:06Gracias.
00:07¡Ayudio, Meagan Markle!
00:08Congratulations to you both.
00:10Thank you.
00:11Can we start with the proposal and the actual moment of your engagement.
00:14When did it happen and how did it happen?
00:17It happened a few weeks ago, early this month, here at our cottage.
00:23It's a standard, typical night for us.
00:26It's a cosy night.
00:26¿Qué es lo que hicimos? ¿Qué es lo que hicimos?
00:28¿Roasting chicken?
00:29¿Roasting chicken?
00:30¿Trying to roast a chicken?
00:31¿Trying to roast a chicken.
00:32Y es un increíble sorpresa.
00:35Es tan dulce y natural y muy romántico.
00:40Él se quedó en una pieza.
00:41¿Es un instante sí?
00:43Sí.
00:44En realidad, no podía dejar de terminar proposing.
00:47¿Puedo decirle sí?
00:48No, no, no, no.
00:48No, no, no, no, no, no.
00:49No, no, no, no, no, no.
00:50No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:51No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:51I had the ring in my finger and I was like,
00:53can I give you the ring?
00:54She goes, oh, yes, the ring.
00:55So no, it was a really nice moment.
00:58It was just the two of us
00:58and I think I managed to catch it by surprise as well.
01:02Yeah.
01:02And this is how long after you first met?
01:05It would be a year and a half to a little bit more than that.
01:08No, just about a year and a half, yeah.
01:10Which for most people would be quite a whirlwind.
01:13Is that how it's felt to you?
01:15I don't think that I would call it a whirlwind
01:18in terms of our relationship.
01:20Obviously, there have been layers attached to how public it has become after we had a good five, six months
01:27almost with just privacy, which was amazing.
01:31But no, I think we were able to really have so much time just to connect.
01:37And we never went longer than two weeks without seeing each other, even though we were obviously doing a long
01:42distance relationship.
01:43So we made it work.
01:45How did you first meet?
01:48Yes, we first met.
01:49We were introduced, actually, by a mutual friend who we will...
01:53We should protect her privacy and not reveal too much of that.
01:57But it was literally through her.
02:01And then we met once and then twice, back to back, two dates in London last July, beginning of July.
02:09And then it was, I think, about three, maybe four weeks later that I managed to persuade her to come
02:17and join me in Botswana.
02:19And we camped out with each other under the stars.
02:23And we spent coming to join me for five days out there, which was absolutely fantastic.
02:26So then we were really by ourselves, which was crucial to me to make sure that we had a chance
02:32to get to know each other.
02:33But the friend who introduced you, was she trying to set you up?
02:36Yes, it was definitely a set-up.
02:38It was a blind date.
02:39It was a blind date, for sure.
02:40And it's so interesting because we talk about it now.
02:43And even then, you know, because I'm from the States, you don't grow up with the same understanding of the
02:50royal family.
02:51And so while I now understand very clearly there's a global interest there, I didn't know much about him.
02:58And so the only thing that I had asked her when she said she wanted to set us up was,
03:02I had one question.
03:03I said, well, is he nice?
03:04Because if he wasn't kind, it just didn't seem like it would make sense.
03:08And so we went and had a, met for a drink.
03:12And then I think very quickly into that we said, well, what are we doing tomorrow?
03:16We should, we should meet again.
03:17What are we doing tomorrow?
03:18Let's meet again.
03:18And then it was like, right, diaries.
03:20We need to get the diaries out and find out how we're going to make this work.
03:22Because I was off to Africa for a month.
03:25She was working.
03:26And we just said, right, where's, where's the gap?
03:28And the gap happened to be in the perfect place.
03:32So how much did you, Prince Harry, know about Meghan?
03:35Had you seen her on TV?
03:36No, I'd never, never even heard about her until this friend said, Meghan Markle.
03:41I was like, right, okay, give me, give me a bit of background.
03:45Like, what's going on here?
03:46So no, I'd never, I'd never watched Suits.
03:49I'd never heard of Meghan before.
03:50And I was beautifully surprised when I, when I walked into that room and saw her.
03:56And there she was sitting there.
03:57I was like, okay, well, I'm going to really have to up my game here.
04:01I'm going to sit down and have a, and make sure I've got a good chat.
04:04So I think for both of us, though, it was, it was really refreshing because given that
04:09I didn't know a lot about him, everything that I've learned about him, I learned through
04:13him, as opposed to having grown up around different news stories or tabloids or whatever
04:18else.
04:18Anything I learned about him and his family was what he would share with me and vice versa.
04:22So for both of us, it was just a really authentic and organic way to get to know each other.
04:28And was that quite refreshing for you in the way that you've been brought up, you know,
04:32with a lot of people knowing a lot about you?
04:34Was it refreshing?
04:35Or thinking they know.
04:36Or thinking they know.
04:37Exactly.
04:37Yeah.
04:38No, it was hugely refreshing to be able to get to, to know someone who isn't necessarily
04:42within your circle, doesn't know much about me.
04:45I don't know about much about her.
04:46So to be able to start almost afresh, right from the beginning and getting to know each
04:50other step by step, and then taking that huge leap of only two dates and then going
04:57effectively on holiday together in the middle of nowhere and, you know, showing a tent together
05:02and all that kind of stuff.
05:02It was, you know, it was fantastic.
05:04It was absolutely amazing to get to know her as quickly as I did.
05:09And starting a long distance relationship, you were working on Suits.
05:12You had, I imagine, a packed filming schedule.
05:14You've got lots of commitments of your own.
05:17How hard was it to keep things going?
05:19It was, yeah.
05:21It was just a choice, right?
05:23I think that very early on when we realized we were going to commit to each other, that
05:29we knew we had to invest the time and the energy and whatever it took to make that happen.
05:33And so, yes, with the filming schedule, it was not the easiest because it, of course, included
05:40a lot of travel back and forth.
05:42But I don't think you've had any idea what time zone you've been on for the last year
05:46and a half.
05:47No.
05:48Coming over here four days or a week and then going back and then straight into filming the
05:52next day, 4 a.m. wake-up calls on a Monday, straight into set, you know.
05:57Right off the plane and straight to set and just coming back and doing it again.
06:00Just trying to stay as close as possible, but, you know, on two different time zones and
06:04five hours apart does have its challenges.
06:06But, you know, we made it work and now we're here, so we're thrilled.
06:11But in the case of your relationship, unlike for most people, there's this whole layer of
06:15what it means to get involved with someone from the royal family.
06:19How much of a sense did you have, Megan, of the enormity of what you were getting into,
06:23what it might mean for your life?
06:24I think I can very safely say, as naive as it sounds now, having gone through this learning
06:31curve in the past year and a half, I did not have any understanding of just what it would
06:36be like.
06:37I don't think either of us did that.
06:38We both said that, even though we knew that it would be...
06:40I tried to warn you as much as possible, but I think both of us were totally surprised
06:48by the reaction after the first five, six months of what we had to ourselves of what actually
06:53happened from then, so I think you can have as many conversations as you want and try
06:57and prepare as much as possible, but we were totally unprepared for what happened after that.
07:03The scrutiny.
07:04Well, all sorts.
07:05Well, I mean, I think also because there's a misconception that because I have worked
07:11in the entertainment industry that this would be something I would be familiar with, but
07:15even though I'd been on my show for, I guess, six years at that point and working before
07:20that, I've never been part of tabloid culture.
07:22I've never been in pop culture to that degree and lived a relatively quiet life, even though
07:28I focus so much on my job.
07:30And so that was a really stark difference out of the gate.
07:36And I think we were just hit so hard at the beginning with a lot of mistruths that I made
07:41the choice to not read anything, positive or negative.
07:44It just didn't make sense.
07:45And instead, we focused all of our energies just on nurturing our relationship.
07:50And some of that scrutiny, and you ended up making a very public statement about it, some
07:54of that scrutiny was centred around your ethnicity, Megan.
07:58And when you realized that, what did you think?
08:01Of course, it's disheartening.
08:03You know, it's a shame that that is the climate in this world to focus that much on that or
08:10that that would be discriminatory in that sense.
08:12But I think, you know, at the end of the day, I'm really just proud of who I am and
08:17where
08:17I come from.
08:18And we have never put any focus on that.
08:22We've just focused on who we are as a couple.
08:25And so when you take all those extra layers away and all of that noise, I think it makes
08:31it really easy to just enjoy being together and tune all the rest of that out.
08:36But now that it is all official, Prince Harry, do you have that sense that the combination
08:40of the two of you, your different backgrounds, that you together represent something new for
08:45the royal family?
08:46I don't know if it's something new.
08:47I think it's, you know, for me, it's an added member of the family.
08:52It's another team player as part of the bigger team.
08:55And, you know, for all of us, what we want to do is be able to carry out the right
09:00engagements,
09:01carry out our work, and try and encourage others and the younger generation to be able
09:05to see the world in the correct sense rather than perhaps having a distorted view.
09:12So, you know, the fact that I fell in love with Meghan so incredibly quickly was a sort
09:19of confirmation to me that everything, all the stars were aligned, everything was just
09:24perfect.
09:24It was this beautiful woman just sort of literally tripped and fell into my life.
09:28I fell into her life.
09:29And the fact that she, I know the fact that she'll be really unbelievably good at the
09:36job part of it as well is obviously a huge relief to me because she'll be able to deal
09:41with everything else that comes with it.
09:43But, no, you know, we're a fantastic team.
09:46We know we are.
09:47And we hope to, you know, over time, try and have as much impact for the things that we
09:53care about as much as possible.
09:54I am very excited about that.
09:56Yeah.
09:56And, Meghan, given your acting and the profile you had, you'd already been involved in various
10:00causes.
10:00You've been an ambassador for UN Women.
10:02Mm-hmm.
10:03What about this new role?
10:05I mean, you're going to have a bigger platform, a bigger voice.
10:08What do you want to do with it?
10:09I mean, how...
10:11I can't imagine.
10:13No, I'm not a singer.
10:15I think what's been really exciting as we talk about the transition of this out of my
10:21career but into the role is that, as you said, the causes that have been very important to
10:25me I can focus even more energy on because very early out of the gate I think you realize
10:31once you have access or a voice that people are willing to listen to with that comes a lot
10:35of responsibility, which I take seriously.
10:37And, at the same time, I think in these beginning few months and now being boots on the ground
10:43in the UK, I'm excited to just really get to know more about the different communities
10:48here, smaller organizations who are working on the same causes that I've always been passionate
10:53about under this umbrella and also being able to go around to the Commonwealth.
10:58I think it's just the beginning of the...
11:00There's a lot to do.
11:01Really?
11:01There's a lot to do.
11:03And it's an immense change.
11:04And you're getting a new country out of it, a husband obviously, but also giving up your
11:12career.
11:13Sounds nice, isn't it?
11:14Yes.
11:14Yes.
11:15But I don't see it as giving anything up.
11:18I just see it as a change.
11:20It's a new challenge.
11:21It's a new...
11:21It's a new chapter, right?
11:23And also keep in mind, I've been working on my show for seven years.
11:28So, we are very, very fortunate to be able to have that sort of longevity on a series.
11:33And for me, once we hit the hundred episode marker, I thought, you know what, I have ticked
11:38this box and I feel really proud of the work I've done there.
11:40And now it's time to, as you said, work as a team with you.
11:46I do.
11:47Yeah.
11:47But do you have that sense of responsibility, Prince Harry, for what you're asking Meghan
11:51to do?
11:52Of course.
11:54That sense of responsibility was essentially from day one or maybe a couple of months in
11:59when I suddenly realised, actually, this is, you know, I feel, I know that I'm in love
12:04with this girl and I hope that she's in love with me, but we still had to sit down on
12:08the
12:08sofa and I still, you know, I still had to have some pretty, you know, frank conversations
12:12with her to say that, you know, what you're letting yourself in for is, it is, it's a big,
12:16it's a big deal.
12:17And it's, you know, it's not, I wouldn't, it's not, it's not easy for anybody.
12:22But I know that, you know, at the end of the day, she, she chooses me and I choose her.
12:28And therefore, you know, whatever, whatever we have to tackle together or individually will
12:32always be us together as a team.
12:34So I think, I think she's capable of...
12:38I don't know.
12:39She's capable of, she's capable of anything.
12:41Thank you.
12:41And together, as I said, there's, there's a hell of a lot of stuff and work that needs
12:46doing.
12:47At the moment for us, it's going to be making sure that our relationship is always put first.
12:51But no, look, both of us have passions for, for, for wanting to make change, change for
12:58good.
12:58And, you know, with lots of young people running around the Commonwealth, that's where we're
13:02going to spend most of our time, hopefully.
13:03And it was really one of the first things we connected on.
13:05It was one of the first things we started talking about when we met was just the
13:08different things that we wanted to do in the world and how passionate we were about seeing
13:12change.
13:13I think that was, that's what got date two in the books, probably.
13:19Plenty to talk about.
13:20Children?
13:22Plans?
13:22Not currently, no.
13:24No, of course, you know, I think, you know, one, one, one step at a time and hopefully we'll
13:29start a family in the near future.
13:30Have you met each other's families?
13:33I imagine.
13:34Yes, his family has been so welcoming.
13:36And you've met quite a few of them actually.
13:38I have on both sides of his family's mom's side as well, which has been really important
13:41to me too.
13:42But yes, the family has been great.
13:44And over the past year and a half, we've just had a really nice time getting to know
13:49them and progressively helping me feel a part of, of not just the institution, but also
13:54part of the family, which has been really, really special.
13:58Trying to track them down and make sure that they're around at the same time that she's
14:01popping in without telling too many people and we've managed, we've actually done incredibly
14:06well to make sure that you've met all the, all the key people.
14:09So does that mean a lot of the time that you've been together in this last year and a half,
14:12you've been, you've been at home a lot.
14:15Yes.
14:15No, we've, we've, well, yeah, we had to sort of reverse the whole process and cosy nights
14:23in, in front of the television, cooking dinner with, you know, just the two of us by ourselves
14:27in our little cottage, rather than going out for dinner and being seen in public.
14:31So we, we have, we reversed the whole process, which is, it's, it's, it's provided different
14:36opportunities and it's made us a hell of a lot closer in a shorter space of time.
14:39That's true.
14:40That's, you know, without question.
14:41So, you know, if anybody else at home is listening, then maybe, you know, slow down on the dates
14:45and maybe spend more time at home.
14:47But no, it's, it's for us, it's, it's an opportunity to, to really get to know each other
14:52without other people, you know, looking or trying to take photos on their phones and all
14:56that kind of stuff.
14:56You know, with that, that comes, that comes, comes with the, comes with the job, comes with
15:00the role, but where possible.
15:02Yeah.
15:02And we were able to really get to know each other that way, but also then to go and have
15:06friends
15:06over for dinner or to go to his family's tea or any of those sort of things.
15:11And even, you know, just to take the, take the time to be able to go on long country walks
15:17and just talk.
15:19We've been all over the place.
15:20Have you met the Queen?
15:22I have, yes.
15:22Couple of times.
15:23What was that like?
15:24Sure, a couple of times.
15:25Um, it's incredible.
15:27I think, you know, A, to be able to meet her through his lens, not just with his honour
15:34and respect for her as the monarch, but the love that he has for her as his grandmother.
15:40All of those layers have been so important for me so that when I met her, I had such a
15:45deep
15:45understanding and of course, incredible respect for being able to have that time with her.
15:50And, and we've had a really, she's, she's an incredible woman.
15:55And the corgis took to you straight away.
15:56That's true.
15:57For the last 33 years being barked at.
15:59This one walks in absolutely nothing.
16:01Just laying on my feet during tea.
16:03It was very sweet.
16:04And I was just like, oh.
16:05That has to be a good sign.
16:07Speaking of dogs, have you brought yours to the UK?
16:09Well, I have two dogs that I've had for quite a long time, both my rescue pups.
16:14And one is now staying with very close friends.
16:16And my other little guy is, yes, he's in the UK.
16:20He's been here for a while.
16:21Okay.
16:22Let's hope he adjusts well.
16:23I think he's doing just fine.
16:25What was it like introducing Megan to your father and your brother?
16:30Um, what was it like?
16:34It was exciting.
16:35I mean, I, you know, I've been seeing her for a period of time when I literally didn't
16:39tell anybody at all.
16:41And then William was longing to meet her.
16:44And so was Catherine.
16:45So, you know, being our neighbors, we managed to get, get that in a couple of, well, quite
16:50a few times now.
16:51Um, and Catherine's been absolutely, um, amazing as is William as well.
16:56You know, fantastic support.
16:57And then my, my father's already had, you know, a couple of, no more than that.
17:00We've had a handful of teas and meetings and, and all sorts of gatherings over, over at
17:06his place as well.
17:06So, um, no, the family together have been absolutely, um, you know, solid support.
17:12And, and my grandparents as well have been, have been wonderful throughout this whole process.
17:16And they've known for quite some time.
17:17So how they, how they haven't told anybody is, is again, a miracle in itself.
17:22But, um, no, the whole family have come together and, and have been a huge amount of support.
17:27They've been amazing.
17:28And Megan, your parents, do you think, you know, well, very happy for you, obviously.
17:33Yes.
17:33Do you think they have worried at all about the scale of what you're getting into?
17:36Well, I'm sure at the onset, uh, both my parents and my close friends were concerned
17:42because we got very quickly swept up in a media storm that, as I, I shared, was not part of
17:49my life before that.
17:50But they also had never seen me so happy.
17:54And, um, and I think also once my friends, excuse me, were able to, to really meet Harry
18:00and my mom, who we've spent a lot of time with, who was so much fun.
18:05Your mom's amazing.
18:06It was just, you know, it was just obvious that no matter what we were being put through,
18:13that it was just temporary and that we were going to be able to get through that.
18:18So everyone was really happy with me.
18:19He's talked to my dad a few times, hasn't been able to meet him just yet.
18:22Um, but it's all been, it's all been worth every effort.
18:26Yeah, it's been great.
18:28Um, your ring.
18:29Oh yeah.
18:31Tell us about your ring.
18:33Um, the ring is, is obviously yellow gold because that's, um, her favourite.
18:38And the main stone itself, um, are sourced from Botswana.
18:41And the, uh, the little diamonds either side are from my mother's jewelry collection
18:46to make sure that she's with us on this, on this crazy journey together.
18:51Um, and.
18:52It's beautiful.
18:53And he designed it.
18:54It's incredible.
18:56Um.
18:57Yeah.
18:58Yeah.
18:58Make sure it stays on that finger.
19:00Of course.
19:01Of course.
19:01Of course.
19:02What does it mean to you, Megan, to have those stones on your finger that once belonged to
19:06Princess Diana?
19:07I, I think everything about, um, Harry's thoughtfulness is, and the inclusion of that and obviously
19:16not being able to meet his mom.
19:19It's so important to me to, to know that she's a part of this with us.
19:24And, and I think in being able to meet his aunts and, and also to be like Julia and just
19:30different
19:30people who are so important to his mom.
19:32I'm able to, in some way, know a part of her through them and of course through him.
19:37And it's, um, it's incredibly special and, you know, to be able to have this which sort
19:42of links where you come from and Botswana which is important to us.
19:47And it's, uh, it's perfect.
19:50What do you think your mother would have thought of Megan or said about Megan?
19:54Oh, these days they'd be thick as thieves.
19:57Without question.
19:58I think she would be over the moon, jumping up and down, you know, so excited for, for me.
20:04But then, as I said, we've probably been best friends, best friends with Megan.
20:08So, no, it's, I, you know, it's, it is days like, days like today when, when I really miss
20:13having her around and miss being able to share the, the happy news.
20:16But, you know, with, with the ring and with everything else that's going on, I'm sure she's,
20:19She's with us.
20:20I'm sure she's with us, you know, you know, jumping up and down somewhere else.
20:24Prince Harry, Megan Markle, thank you both very much.
20:27Thank you so much.
