00:24Only a few hours earlier, the renowned author learned she was the 1993 winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature.
00:31At first it was disbelief and then I, you know, felt this sort of tremor and then I, some other
00:39people called me
00:40so I thought, oh yes, it must be true.
00:42A professor of creative writing at Princeton University, Morrison's work has been praised
00:47for its richly expressive depictions of black America.
00:49From her first book, Bluest Eye, to the Pulitzer Prize winning Beloved.
00:54The Swedish Academy said in its decision, Morrison delves into the language itself,
00:58a language she wants to liberate from the fetters of race.
01:01I think I write well.
01:03And I think I have a distinctive voice.
01:08That is something that I share with other writers who also write well and have distinctive voices.
01:14But that's what makes writing this very difficult, very risky, very powerful enterprise.
01:19A year ago in Good Morning America, she read from some of her work.
01:22The minute they arrive at the train station or get off the ferry and glimpse the wide streets
01:27and the wasteful lamps lighting them, they know they're born for it.
01:32The prize comes with an $825,000 cash reward.
01:37Morrison says she's going to celebrate tonight with some of her friends here at Princeton,
01:40but she still doesn't know what she's going to do with the money.
