00:00Did you know?
00:02Did you know?
00:06Did you know?
00:09Elephants threw dust all over themselves to keep little bugs off and help them stay clean.
00:19You can bet that if you threw dust all over yourself, your clothes would end up in the washing machine.
00:34It had been a dull, rainy spring day.
00:38Orby discovered that when you leave puzzle pieces out in the rain, the picture peels off.
00:44Katie found out that if you close your eyes, you'll feel tickly whiskers long before you hear chants.
00:49And they both learned that if you sit on the porch when it's wet, a lot of water ends up
00:55on your jeans.
00:56Katie and Orby were glad it had cleared up.
01:00When Mom was cleaning the kitchen, they found two bags of bread crusts that she'd put aside for cooking.
01:06They were still good, but there was no way they were going to last much longer.
01:10She thought maybe they should go down to the pond and give the ducks a treat.
01:14As you can imagine, Katie and Orby just loved this idea.
01:20When they were turning the doorknob to leave, the doorbell rang.
01:25Orby opened the door slowly.
01:28There was the mailman with a great big smile on his face.
01:31He told Orby he wanted to deliver this letter personally because it was addressed to Katie and Orby.
01:38Katie bounced to the door, followed by Mom.
01:42They thanked the mailman.
01:46Orby opened the letter.
01:48Katie unfolded it.
01:51And Mom read it to them.
01:54It was from their grandparents.
01:55And it told about all the fun things they'd been doing.
02:00Orby looked at all the printing.
02:02It seemed to him that Katie's grandparents were having loads of fun.
02:08As they walked along the sidewalk, Orby told Mom that maybe he and Katie weren't having loads of fun.
02:14I mean, they were having fun, but it hadn't been that exciting lately.
02:19Mom kissed Orby and told him that excitement was where you found it,
02:23which meant you couldn't always plan it.
02:27Soon Orby forgot about that and told Katie that they should play Hansel and Gretel
02:32and leave a trail of breadcrumbs on the path down to the pond.
02:37Each friend took a piece of bread and dropped little tiny pieces.
02:41They giggled as they did it because, of course, Mom knew the way back.
02:48At the pond, they saw a family of ducks waddling towards the pond.
02:52The four ducklings followed right behind the mother.
02:55Wherever the mother went, so did the ducklings.
03:00Mom spread out her arms and walked in a wavy way.
03:04Suddenly, her little ducklings, Katie and Orby, did exactly the same thing.
03:11When they finally got to the bench, everybody laughed.
03:14Katie and Orby grinned at Mom.
03:17That's how baby animals learn, she pointed out.
03:19They watched their mothers and do everything the same way.
03:26Katie noticed that the mother and her ducklings were headed right into the pond.
03:31Katie was worried that the ducklings might not know how to swim.
03:35Mom told her she was in for a big surprise.
03:40Each duckling plopped into the water right behind their mother
03:43and did what their mother was doing, which was swim.
03:48There were geese in the water, too,
03:50and some of the older ducks and geese were gathered in front of the bench,
03:53waiting to see if the visitors to their pond had brought any treats.
03:58When Katie and Orby realized they were waiting for treats,
04:01they jumped right off the bench and grabbed the bag.
04:04The sudden movement sent all the geese and ducks flying away across the pond.
04:09Mom reminded them that all of nature appreciates quiet.
04:14The two friends tiptoed to the edge of the pond.
04:19Mom reminded them not to go too close, and they were very careful.
04:25After a while, Orby noticed that all the big ducks and geese were eating,
04:30but the little ones weren't getting anything.
04:33He didn't think that was very fair.
04:36And when he told Mom, she agreed.
04:38Maybe Katie could keep feeding the big ones at one place in the pond,
04:42and Orby could move to another part,
04:44and hope that the little ducks would follow him.
04:47That was a great idea.
04:49And it almost worked.
04:52Almost.
04:53Until Orby threw his first piece of bread.
04:55With a man swooping and splashing of wings,
04:59some of the big ducks and geese flew over to him.
05:01Some even got on the land around him.
05:05Orby laughed and then asked Mom what to do.
05:09Mom was laughing, too.
05:10It was funny to see Orby surrounded by so many ducks and geese.
05:14Her plan certainly didn't work.
05:17And just as Mom was calling to Orby to feed them anyway,
05:21an awful thing happened.
05:22Orby stepped back from a rather large duck that had gotten behind him.
05:26As he turned, he slipped right off the edge of the pond and fell into the water.
05:33In less than a flash, Mom was up and across the grass and into the pond, too.
05:38Katie screamed and the birds took off.
05:41Mom grabbed Orby, only to discover that the water came up to her knees.
05:47Orby and Mom were covered in pond sludge, and they looked pretty awful.
05:51Once Katie was sure that they were all right, she couldn't help it.
05:55She had to laugh.
05:57And Mom hugged Orby, who was a little frightened, and she started to laugh, too.
06:03There were slime and weeds all over them.
06:08At the other end of the pond, all the ducks were looking in astonishment.
06:12No one who wasn't a duck or a goose or a fish had ever swum in their pond.
06:17They were very surprised.
06:19Mom put Orby up in the grass and then pulled herself out.
06:23She took off her running shoes.
06:25When she threw them upside down, water and little green bits of things fell to the ground.
06:31Orby pulled strips of weeds away from his body.
06:35Katie tried to help, but Mom and Orby were both a little stinky.
06:40Orby told Mom he was sorry.
06:42He didn't mean to fall into the pond.
06:45Mom told him that was all right, and nothing else at that moment mattered to her.
06:49Except maybe a nice warm bath.
06:53Katie threw the rest of the crumbs up in the air as fast and as far as she could.
06:57The ducks and geese came back, and even the ducklings had the treat.
07:03As they dripped and squelched up the path, Mom pointed out that someone else had had a treat, too.
07:09She showed Katie and Orby that the breadcrumbs on the path were gone.
07:14Up in a tree, a squirrel watched them go by.
07:17He looked very full.
07:20As they entered the bathroom, Orby spun around and said that they had something very exciting, if not a little
07:26scrouchy, to tell Grandma and Grandpa.
07:30Mom agreed.
07:31She ran the bath and asked Orby not to feel that he had to make every letter to their grandparents
07:36as exciting as this one.
07:39Orby gave Mom a dirty, soggy hug.
07:42He promised he'd be more careful from now on.
07:45It's very important to be careful.
07:48I hope you remember to be careful, too, because I happen to know that you are very precious to a
07:57whole lot of people.
08:10Seeds spread themselves in different ways.
08:15Some seeds pop when they're attached.
08:19Some fly with the wind.
08:24But watch out for the burr bush.
08:26Burrs love to stick to you.
08:29Burrs love to stick to you.
08:31Burrs love to stick to you.
08:31Burrs love to stick to you.
