On Good Friday, March 27, 1964, at 5:36 PM, the ground beneath Alaska began to move — and for nearly four and a half minutes, it refused to stop. What followed was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in US history: a magnitude 9.2 monster that tore along the seafloor for hundreds of miles and reshaped the map of an entire coastline.

In Anchorage, entire city blocks dropped nearly nine feet. Streets split open, buildings folded, and the ground itself heaved like an open sea. Along the coast, towering tsunamis raced toward fishing villages that had no warning, no sirens, and no word yet for the wave that was coming. Valdez, Seward, Chenega, and Kodiak would never be the same.

But the true legacy of the Great Alaska Earthquake was written in the science it unlocked. When USGS geologist George Plafker walked the shattered, uplifted coastline, his careful measurements finally proved a theory scientists had doubted for decades: plate tectonics. Alaska 1964 became the world's first clearly measured subduction earthquake — the moment we understood how our planet truly works.
