Around 60,000 migrants crossed from Morocco into the Spanish exclave of Ceuta on July 29 and 30. The National Review calls the scale and speed unprecedented for the territory, whose population is 83,500. The Atlantic reports the crossings followed social media posts, including a TikTok video, that falsely claimed the Spanish border was open and crossable without papers.
At least 70 people died in the water, including children, and Spanish police let the migrants land on the beach. DW puts the death toll at 72.
In the aftermath, far-right politicians and activists descended on Ceuta. According to DW, Vox leader Santiago Abascal called the surge an invasion and an act of war, urged that the border with Morocco be closed immediately, and called for scrapping the EU-Morocco agreement.
People's Party leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo traveled to Ceuta and criticized Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez for failing to prevent the rush. Far-right MEP Alvise Perez called for migrants to be expelled during a confrontation with rival protesters, then had to shelter in a bar before police escorted him away.
The New York Times headlined its coverage on far-right leaders calling on Spain to expel migrants.
