Russian missiles struck Kyiv before dawn on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2026, killing nine people and injuring more than 30 others. It was the second ballistic missile assault on the city that week. The attack involved 35 missiles and 185 attack drones.
Zelensky said only one of 27 ballistic missiles was shot down, citing a shortage of Patriot interceptors. He said Ukraine had run out of air defense interceptors. Mayor Vitali Klitschko called it a horrific night for Kyiv.
The Darnytskyi district suffered the heaviest toll, with seven deaths and 14 injured. In the Solomianskyi district a five-story building was hit and collapsed, killing two and injuring children among 35 residents rescued.
Zelensky had appealed for American air-defense missiles during a White House meeting on Tuesday. The New York Times reported that the strikes came after Trump backed off an air-defense pledge.
