00:00We're here at the Griffith Observatory.
00:02Let's check it out!
00:03Okay, first we have to look around outside.
00:06The observatory is in Griffith Park in Los Angeles, and it has some incredible views.
00:11You can see the Hollywood sign, you can see all across the city, and you can even see
00:16the filming locations from some iconic films like Rebel Without a Cause with James Dean
00:21and La La Land.
00:23Okay, back to the observatory, let's go inside.
00:26My favorite thing about this place is actually that it's free, and has been since it opened
00:31in 1935.
00:33The benefactor who funded the observatory, Griffith J. Griffith, real name, stipulated in his will
00:39that the observatory remain open with no admission.
00:42And so it has.
00:43Inside you can find incredible imagery of outer space, an infrared camera, telescopes galore,
00:49and incredible pieces of space history.
00:52They have a real periodic table of elements, including the radioactive ones, a real piece
00:57of the moon, meteorites, a seismograph actively detecting earthquakes, a theater named after
01:03Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy, and so much more.
01:06There's way too much inside to fully detail in this video, but there is a lot to explore.
01:13Up on the roof is the piece de resistance, the big telescope, the 12-inch refracting telescope
01:18that you can visit.
01:19And sometimes at night, they will even host star parties, and you can look at the stars
01:24through the telescope for yourself.
01:27Not part of the free experience, but the observatory also has a planetarium.
01:31And right now, the show Signs of Life explores humanity's hunt for life throughout our solar
01:37system and beyond.
01:38And who doesn't love a planetarium show?
01:41And I'm a sucker for a museum gift shop, so I had to swing on through before leaving,
01:45but wow, what a wonderful day.
01:47See you later, Griffith Observatory!
