00:22carbon-emitting sporting events in history. And the numbers are staggering. According to
00:28a new executive report by World Climate Athletes, published in London on July 20, 2026, the
00:34expanded FIFA World Cup generated an estimated 7.8 to 9 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent
00:41emissions. That's more than double the reported carbon footprint of the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
00:47The report, titled The Climate Bill of the Expanded FIFA 2026 Game, studied the entire 39-day
00:54tournament hosted across Canada, Mexico and the United States, involving 48 teams, 104 matches
01:00and 16 host cities. Its conclusion? The climate burden of mega-sporting events has fundamentally
01:07changed. For years, environmental criticism of World Cups focused on constructing new stadiums,
01:13concrete, steel, land use, massive infrastructure projects. But FIFA 2026 was different. Most matches
01:23were played in existing commercial stadiums, dramatically reducing construction-related emissions.
01:29According to the report, infrastructure accounted for just 238,000 tons of CO2e, only 3.1% of the
01:38tournament's total emissions. For an event of this size, that's remarkably low. So where did the
01:44emissions come from? The answer is simple. Travel. Spectator Transport alone accounted for an estimated
01:5287.8% of the tournament's emissions. That's around 6.8 million tons of CO2e. The report describes it as

03:49climate records of the host nations. Why? Because international aviation emissions are treated differently under
03:56current climate accounting systems. Countries submit climate commitments called nationally determined
04:01contributions or NDCs under the Paris agreement. But international flight emissions are often
04:08reported separately rather than counted directly in national totals. World climate athletes calls this
04:14the NDC accounting loophole. In simple terms, millions of tons of emissions can be generated because of a
04:22world cup. Yet those emissions may not clearly appear within the climate commitments of the United States,

04:59cooling loads. Compared to aviation, that's relatively small. But it highlights another growing issue.
05:06Future tournaments will increasingly face hotter summers, greater electricity demand, and higher energy
05:14consumption to keep players and spectators safe. The report says future stadiums will need cleaner electricity,
05:20better ventilation, improved passive cooling, more shade, and smarter scheduling. So how can future tournaments
05:29reduce their climate impact? The report offers three major recommendations. First, passenger travel should become
05:37part of official event carbon accounting. Organizers should estimate travel emissions before selecting host nations
05:44and compare different tournament formats. Second, host countries should track aviation surges caused
05:50by major sporting events. Rather than leaving these emissions outside official climate records.
05:56The report recommends publishing a dedicated inventory showing the additional flight activity
06:02generated by the tournament. Third, athletes should lead campaigns encouraging fans to make lower
06:08carbon travel choices. That could include choosing trains or coaches wherever practical, staying longer in one host
06:16region instead of flying between several cities, using local public transport, reducing energy use in accommodation,
06:24and supporting credible climate action linked to the tournament. The report also acknowledges one important reality.
06:32Fans cannot choose low carbon transport if that transport simply doesn't exist. Structural change is still essential.
06:39The World Cup is continuing to grow. More teams, more matches, more countries involved, larger audiences,
06:49higher revenues. But the report warns that bigger tournaments also mean more travel and potentially far greater emissions.
06:57It argues that simply reusing stadiums is no longer enough. Future organizers will have to answer difficult questions.
