00:04You're watching Euronews' fact-checking show, The Cube.
00:07Within hours of the deadly attack at Berlin's annual Pride event,
00:11false and misleading claims began spreading online,
00:14while police were still searching for the suspect.
00:17One woman was killed, and at least 29 people were injured
00:21after a white van drove into a crowd near the main parade.
00:25But as authorities worked to establish what happened,
00:27an information vacuum quickly emerged.
00:30After the incident, videos appear to show a man in a white t-shirt
00:34being detained by police.
00:36The footage was shared widely alongside claims
00:39that the Pride attacker had been arrested at the scene.
00:42It also circulated through pro-Russian telegram groups
00:45and a German-language website belonging to the Pravda network,
00:49which researchers have linked to pro-Kremlin influence operations.
00:53But police said no suspect had been arrested at that point,
00:56meaning the claim attached to the footage is misleading.
01:00Another video circulated on TikTok claimed to show people running away from the attack.
01:05But it's not from Berlin at all.
01:06The video is from a shooting at the Salsa on St. Clair Festival in Toronto,
01:10where two people were killed in July.
01:13As the manhunt continued, social media users also falsely identified TikTok creator
01:19Abdul Malik as the attacker.
01:21The videos were shared alongside political posts criticizing Germany's immigration
01:25and deportation policies, even though police had not yet confirmed the suspect's identity.
01:31In a video, Malik denied any involvement and said the accusation had put both him and his family at risk.
01:38Officials later identified the suspect as a different man, 21-year-old Abdul B,
01:43who was shot dead during a police operation the following evening.
