00:00Welcome to This Explainer. Today, we're diving into what is honestly one of the longest, most complex, and highly scrutinized
00:07land disputes in all of human history.
00:09We're looking at a single, incredibly cinematic plot of land in India, literally just a few acres in size, that
00:15has completely changed the political and social landscape of a billion-person democracy.
00:19So, this isn't just a legal case. What we have here is a 450-year-old, multi-generational epic. It's
00:26a story packed with ancient faith, colonial era boundaries, deep archaeological excavations, and eventually modern judicial finality.
00:34The stakes here, which touch on the very secular fabric of modern India, could not have been higher, culminating in
00:40a definitive Supreme Court verdict.
00:42To understand how we got there, we have to set the scene. So, let's start with Act 1, a centuries
00:48-old dispute, taking place in the ancient city of Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh.
00:53At the absolute heart of this story is Ram Janmabhumi. For centuries, a massive number of Hindus have believed this
01:00exact geographical spot to be the mythical birthplace of Rama, one of the principal deities of Hinduism.
01:07But, standing right on this very spot for hundreds of years was a 16th-century structure known as the Babri
01:13Masjid. The way these two identities are intertwined is just profound.
01:17Actually, historical records show that even before the 1940s, the mosque was officially referred to in documents as Masjid Ijanmastan,
01:25which translates directly to the Mosque of the Birthplace.
01:28Let's sweep through the timeline. In 1528, the mosque is constructed by a commander of the Mughal Emperor Babur.
01:35And things are relatively quiet for a long time, until 1853, which marks the first recorded major armed clashes over
01:43the site between Hindu ascetics and Muslims.
01:46Things get so tense that by 1855, the civil administration literally has to step in and build a boundary wall,
01:53physically dividing the premises.
01:54You had Muslims offering prayers in the inner courtyard, and Hindus offering prayers on a raised platform in the outer
02:00courtyard.
02:01This delicate physical division holds all the way until 1949, when, out of nowhere, idols of Rama appear inside the
02:09mosque.
02:10Because of this, the government locks down the building completely to stop any more conflict.
02:14That lockdown basically froze the site in time for decades, but now the pacing accelerates as we enter Act II,
02:22the boiling point.
02:23We're moving from a slow historical burn right into the rapidly escalating events of the 1980s.
02:30In 1984, the movement gathers this unstoppable momentum when the Vishwa Hindu Parishad initiates a huge public campaign to build
02:37a temple.
02:38Then, 1986, brings a massive turning point.
02:41A court actually orders the locks on the gates to be removed, which grants Hindus full access to worship.
02:47By 1989, they are allowed to lay a foundation stone.
02:50And then, just look at the sheer scale of the escalation.
02:53In 1990, BJP leader L.K. Advani embarks on a 10,000-kilometer chariot procession.
03:00He starts way down in the south of India and heads straight for Ayodhya.
03:03At this point, the entire nation is glued to this single piece of land.
03:07Which brings us to the tragic climax of this timeline.
03:11December 6, 1992.
03:13The Demolition.
03:14Just wrap your head around this number for a second.
03:18150,000.
03:19That's the estimated number of car savics, or volunteers, who gathered at the site that day for what was supposed
03:25to be a symbolic ceremony.
03:27But around noon, the outer cordon breaks.
03:29This massive crowd surges forward, and within a matter of hours, they completely raise the 400-year-old Babri Mosques
03:36to rubble, leaving a makeshift temple in its place.
03:39In the aftermath of this, the government forms the Liberhan Commission to investigate exactly what happened.
03:45It took them 17 years and 48 extensions to finalize the report.
03:49And when they finally did in 2009, their conclusion was incredibly stark.
03:53They stated the demolition was meticulously planned and called it one of the worst abhorrent acts in the history of
04:00the nation.
04:01The report even indicted several high-profile political leaders, basically saying that the build-up to this was totally calculated.
04:07But the fallout on the ground was immediate and it was devastating.
04:11Two to three thousand people.
04:13Take a quiet second to really reflect on that number.
04:15This represents the human cost of the nationwide communal riots that erupted instantly between Hindus and Muslims.
04:21And this violence wasn't just contained to Ayodhya.
04:24It spread like wildfire through major cities as far away as Mumbai.
04:27The shockwaves even crossed international borders, triggering retaliatory attacks on Hindu temples in neighboring Pakistan and Bangladesh.
04:34Following that intense violence on the streets, the battle shifts away from the physical ground and into the quiet, analytical
04:42halls of India's highest courtrooms.
04:44Act 3, the gavel.
04:46Decades of legal battles.
04:48Now the courts have to untangle centuries of faith and history and they bring in hard archaeological science to help.
04:55In 2003, the high court orders the Archaeological Survey of India to excavate beneath the disputed site.
05:01What do they find?
05:02Well, they unearthed remnants of a distinctly indigenous, non-Islamic structure right beneath the mosque.
05:08But, and this is a really crucial balance for the courts,
05:11While an older structure did exist, the archaeologists found absolutely no direct evidence that this specific underlying structure was actively
05:19demolished for the purpose of constructing the Babri Mashid.
05:22It's a highly complex piece of evidence, but it deeply influenced the judges.
05:26As you can imagine, the judicial journey was a maze.
05:29In 2010, the Alabad High Court tried to find a middle ground.
05:32They ordered a three-way split of the property, one-third to the Muslim walks board and two-thirds to
05:37different Hindu groups.
05:38Well, nobody was satisfied with that, and every single party appealed.
05:42Finally, in 2019, a five-judge constitution bench of the Supreme Court stepped in and totally quashed that three-way
05:48split.
05:48Instead, they awarded the entire 2.77-acre disputed site to a Hindu trust for the construction of a temple,
05:55and ordered the government to provide a completely alternate five-acre plot to the Muslim community to build a new
06:00mosque.
06:00November 9, 2019.
06:02That is the date the gavel comes down for the final time.
06:06The Supreme Court definitively ends a title dispute that had formerly been in the courts since the 1880s,
06:12and historically contested for almost 450 years.
06:15It's an absolute milestone in Indian history, aiming to bring legal finality to an intensely emotional conflict.
06:22The alternate land for the mosque, by the way, was allotted in a village called Dunipour,
06:26which is about 30 kilometers away by road from the original site.
06:29So what does the reality on the ground look like today?
06:32Let's step into our final chapter, New Foundations and Future.
06:36If we look at the physical fallout of the court's historic decision today, there is a stark contrast.
06:42In January 2024, the Ram Mandir, the Grand Hindu Temple, was officially built, consecrated, and opened
06:48right at the original disputed site in Ayodhya.
06:51But conversely, as of late 2024, reports show that the construction of the Mohammed bin Abdullah Masid
06:56on that alternate five-acre plot in Dunipour has effectively stalled.
07:00The project has faced a really severe lack of funding,
07:03along with a degree of community antipathy towards the proposed design and the location itself.
07:07Which leaves us with this final, lingering thought.
07:10The Supreme Court has closed the legal books, the title suits are totally over,
07:14and the concrete is quite literally being poured.
07:17But as we zoom out and look back at the sweeping, deeply cinematic, and often tragic history
07:22that spans emperors, colonial rulers, and modern judges, we have to ask ourselves,
07:27with the legal battle concluded and new foundations laid,
07:30how will the legacy of this 450-year dispute shape the future of communal harmony in India?
07:35Thank you so much for joining me on this explainer.
07:38Keep analyzing, keep learning, and I'll see you next time.
