Crucial for the efficiency of the plug-in hybrid drive are the phases in which the driver lifts their foot off the accelerator pedal. In such situations, the recuperation is regulated by a defined deceleration, depending on the selected driving mode. Additionally, automatic recuperation can be set in the MMI. In this mode, the vehicle automatically varies the recuperation level.

The degree of recuperation in the RS 5's electric driving mode (EV mode) can also be adjusted in three stages using the paddles on the steering wheel, just like in the all-electric models. The new RS 5 also offers two operating modes: "EV" and "Hybrid." In EV mode, the high-performance model drives exclusively on electric power. Beyond the automatic hybrid mode, a digital slider allows the driver to individually select the desired state of charge. This way, users can determine the desired state of charge of the high-voltage battery themselves.

In hybrid mode, for example, the charge level can be set before the journey so that sufficient energy is available if electric driving is desired at the destination or if no charging option is available. In the RS 5, the predictive operating strategy also optimizes energy planning for the upcoming route. The goal is to cover cities and traffic jams electrically as much as possible – for greater efficiency, lower local emissions, and a tangible hybrid system experience.
