00:01United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for the removal of all sanctions on Syria
00:07as he concluded a two-day visit to the country on Sunday.
00:11During his visit, Guterres met with senior officials and members of civil society,
00:15as well as the UN peacekeeping force deployed in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
00:21He also visited Sidnaya prison near the capital,
00:24Syria's most notoriously brutal facility under longtime leader Bashar al-Assad.
00:30Syria's new authorities, who ousted al-Assad in December 2024,
00:35are trying to turn the page after more than 13 years of war
00:38and to reboot the economy and rebuild infrastructure and institutions.
00:43Western countries have announced the easing of sanctions on Syria, but investors have remained cautious,
00:48while the World Bank has estimated the country's post-war reconstruction could cost up to 190 billion euros.
00:56Guterres emphasized the need for international support to rebuild the country
01:00and help the return of refugees and internally displaced people.
01:04Since al-Assad's ousting, some 1.7 million refugees have returned to Syria, according to the UN,
01:11while around 5.5 million people remain displaced inside the country and 6 million overseas.
