00:05What's Zim?
00:07Oh! Zim?
00:09Well, okay, the long and the short of it is this.
00:11I had been doing a series called The Angry Beavers at Nickelodeon.
00:14I played the voice of Daggett.
00:17And Jonah had come to town to do a new show called Invaders of the Moon.
00:22And originally, I had interviewed and auditioned for it.
00:26And Nickelodeon didn't want to use me at the time because I was already doing Daggett on The Angry Beavers.
00:31So after they did the pilot for Invader Zim, The Angry Beavers had ended.
00:37And I then was asked to come back again and revoice the person who had done the pilot of Invader
00:46Zim.
00:46And we pitched it up a little bit and Nick New York went for it.
00:50And the rest is history.
00:52Today, we become the enemy.
01:05I remember when Jonan first pitched the idea of Zim to Nickelodeon,
01:15I went over to his little office that he had there.
01:18And he wanted to show me what he was working on.
01:20And he had all characters up on a wall.
01:24And I didn't really like any of them.
01:26Except Ger.
01:27He had Ger in his costume.
01:29And I just went right over to him.
01:31He was staring at me with his little beady eyes and green.
01:35And I was like, who's that?
01:38And he described to me what Ger was about.
01:41And I was like, wow, he's so cool.
01:44And then I punched him.
01:48No, I came later.
01:50So the question is, what was it like when Jonan hollowed out my body and used my skin as a
01:58flesh suit?
02:00To kind of walk around as the character?
02:02What was that like?
02:03Is that what you're asking?
02:07I quite enjoyed it.
02:10That's all.
02:11Jonan provided such a great atmosphere for us to create and just be crazy.
02:17And Richard and Andy and Ricky and Jonan and the whole team just created this crazy kind of family environment.
02:27We all trusted each other.
02:28We were allowed to be a little crazy and see what comes out.
02:34And I don't think it was ever too much.
02:35Just like, I guess, whenever you start filming, a little while into it, I'll just come in and be like,
02:41isn't this great?
02:42Isn't this great, everybody?
02:43This is great!
02:47Well, this is the thing.
02:49You know, Jonan, you won't want to hear this at all, but Jonan is a genius, basically.
02:54And so, you know, anyone in his eyes is like a lowly peon.
02:58And, you know, I accept that in that role.
03:01So, you know, I mean, a lot of people think that animation is this combination of a lot of people's
03:06efforts,
03:07you know, from storyboard artists to colorists to the people that market the show to the people that do the
03:12voices.
03:12It's really not true in this case.
03:14This is entirely Jonan's baby.
03:16This is Jonan's inspiration.
03:18And so whatever Jonan wants to say about me, do you really say that about me?
03:25Jonan hanging me by the skull with cables.
03:31Nickelodeon incurred quite a large expense, hanging Kevin and I by the skull with large cables in the studio so
03:39we could really get into our characters.
03:40And that only lasted for a few weeks and then Nickelodeon said, no, we don't want to pay for that
03:45anymore because, you know, it was getting really, really expensive to be floating us above the floor.
03:51Ah, you seem to have grown since last you stood before us, soldier.
03:55I don't think he had feet.
03:57I think he just sort of floated into the front.
04:02And then from there he started calling me and I tried changing my phone number and he just kept calling.
04:12How did I come to work on Zim?
04:14Through an audition process and my agent and casting director Donna Grillo, who is a friend of mine,
04:18and said you have to try and get on the show because it's whacked and you're whacked and you'd be
04:23a perfect mix.
04:26I believe the legend has it that I was originally cast as purple, almighty tallest purple.
04:32And then they found out that Kevin McDonald from Kids in the Hall was available and thought that he'd be
04:36a better purple and I'd be a better red.
04:37So they did the switcheroo.
04:39Oh, no, that's just sad.
04:41Could you get any shorter?
04:44You will be assigned a Blorch, home of the slaughtering rat people. Thank you.
04:48People who find me at conventions or actually had people recognize me for some reason at a restaurant once and
04:55pounced on me.
04:56It was kind of creepy.
04:59But they were nice people.
05:02I can only think that sometimes they must be disappointed because they don't sound like her in real life.
05:07Wait, if you destroyed Dev in the past, then he won't ever be your enemy.
05:10Then you won't have to send a robot back to destroy him.
05:13And then he will be your enemy, so then you will have to send a robot back!
05:19I sound more like Bloaty the Pig, who I did the voice for too.
05:25Not what I'm doing this, but what I'm doing.
05:27Hey! You eat some pizza!
05:32Jonah would have a very specific idea of how Gur should sound.
05:36You know, he would say, do it like this!
05:38And I would go, okay, do it like this!
05:41And sometimes, though, I would take it farther than that.
05:44Especially if it was like in an episode called Door to Door.
05:51There's a scene where Gur was supposed to say, uh...
05:56Why is his head so big?
05:58I think that was the line.
06:00And I did it four different times in whatever way I wanted.
06:04Why is his head so big?
06:07And Jonah liked all of them, so he ran all of them together.
06:11So now Gur is like he's going...
06:13You know, like he's got a glitch or something.
06:15That ended up happening a lot.
06:17So that was...
06:18I guess my one contribution was multiple inflections.
06:28Did I find doing the voice of Zim hard on my voice?
06:32How do I put this?
06:34Yes.
06:44What are you hiding, dogman?
06:46Tell me! Tell me!
06:49PB! Turn back now!
06:51Do not invoke the wrath of the Urken Elites!
06:53I would sometimes have to recoup for a day or day and a half beyond that.
06:58And originally we were supposed to do sometimes like two episodes a session
07:01and it was just impossible because I'd be like this by the...
07:04You know, because in general it's like it was more than just actual screaming.
07:09If you notice, Zim screams a lot just when he's talking.
07:13It's like, Grr!
07:14It's never like, Grr?
07:16Evaluation?
07:17Pathetic!
07:18Pathetic Earth Vehicle!
07:20I am Zim!
07:22You!
07:22Obey the Fist!
07:24Those are two of my favorites.
07:26Uh, my favorite exchange of all time of Invader Zim and Invader Zim,
07:31the things I got to say over and over again.
07:33Uh, there was actually just one time I said this, but, um...
07:37It was in Rise of the Zit Boy and it's when the zit first starts to appear and, uh, I
07:44tell Grr to quickly get me the soap.
07:47And the soap is wrapped in bacon and I say, uh, after scrubbing it all over my face or Zim
07:53scrubs it on his face, I did too because I'm a method voiceover person.
07:57Uh, I said, uh, why was there bacon in the soap?
08:01And Grr says, I made it myself!
08:04That's my favorite exchange of all time.
08:06I don't know why.
08:13Um, is it supposed to be stupid?
08:17It's not stupid!
08:18It's advanced!
08:20I said, well, I just want to kind of, my, put him more up here, basically.
08:24Hello!
08:25Wow!
08:25Welcome, brave irken soldiers!
08:27Well, isn't that nice?
08:29That kind of thing.
08:30And, uh, just kind of more of a very, uh, lilting, kind of, nasally kind of, well, Zim?
08:36You know, that kind of thing.
08:37And then Kevin did a great job, of course, as Purple with his, uh, his voice way up here!
08:40He's, he's brilliant.
08:42He's a genius.
08:42He was very fun to watch during the session.
08:44So, it all worked out.
08:46Um, I'm actually not allowed to ad-lib my lines even now.
08:49I feel like I, when I go to make a phone call, if I'm even gonna call my folks in
08:52Chicago,
08:53I call Jonah first to find out exactly what I need to say.
08:57Uh, no.
08:57There is no ad-libbing going on.
08:59Um, every single move, every single gesture, every single, like, even if I make a face, that,
09:05I have to ask Jonah first before I do that.
09:08There's nothing in comparison to creating a voice and then seeing a character animated
09:16to your voice.
09:17Um, there's, there's nothing like it.
09:20That was your fate of the world work?
09:22Jumping in a puddle?
09:23You do realize I'm gonna have to destroy you now.
09:25It was worth it.
09:27Score one for the human race.
09:28Score nothing for the Zim thingy race.
09:33I will destroy you.
09:34One thing that really, really surprised me about, you know, working on, on Zim was how good
09:39I really was.
09:41You know, I mean, I really didn't, I thought, hey, I'll just give this thing a shot.
09:45We'll see how it goes.
09:45I was just constantly amazed with the quality of work that I was, like, churning out and
09:50what I was really bringing to the series.
09:53Yes, I think Dib's head is big.
09:56Um, I think anyone's head relative to my actual head is big because I have such a small head.
10:02I don't know if we want to model that.
10:04Um, but yeah, I have a tiny little head, so for me, you know, anyone's head is big.
10:09Andy's head is big.
10:11Maybe bigger.
10:15Oh man, he's sitting near us!
10:19I think, actually, the idea that Dib was as hated as he was, um, is sort of what I bring
10:25to the role since that's kind of the way that I grew up.
10:28Not very well liked.
10:29And, uh, you know, I think that you get that even from a two-dimensional character.
10:34It's a bigfoot baby!
10:36I know it!
10:38Leave me alone!
10:40I think I bring that through.
10:41The amount of, like, self-loathing.
10:43A way to prove that I'm, that I'm, that I'm crazy!
10:49Okay, now that makes sense.
10:51Man, we almost believed him.
10:55I absolutely feel sympathy for Dib and his struggles.
10:58Um, I still do.
10:59Uh, even now that, uh, we've parted ways.
11:02I, you know, I live on, essentially, as Dib.
11:05People don't realize that.
11:06They think that, everyone let their characters go.
11:07I didn't really let my character go.
11:09I still, you know, I'm still fighting aliens, and I'm still out there living the Dib way.
11:14If I capture him now, no one will be able to stop the hamster!
11:17But if I let him go to my peepee, he's just gonna keep on trying to destroy mankind!
11:22This stinks!
11:24Okay, so if I saves him, then he'll move on to destroy mankind and upset the balance of the entire
11:30Earth!
11:30I mean, Gaz is really smart, she could play a great video game, and she loves piggies!
11:36What more do you want?
11:38Quarter circle back!
11:40What?!
11:40The transformation move, it's always quarter circle back!
11:46Oh, hey! Look at that!
11:52When you die, can I play?
11:53Um, since I've pretty much worn out my other piggy, a new one would be nice.
12:02I won't be as rough with this one.
12:13I love my plush piggy!
12:15Piggies roll!
12:23Piggies roll!
12:24Piggies roll!
12:28Piggies roll!
12:29Piggies roll!
12:30I would love a moose!
12:32Ohhhh, and it...
12:34squeaks!
12:36Is that for me?
12:38Is...
12:39This is for...
12:40That's for you.
12:41This...
12:42This is for me.
12:46Buddy.
12:50No, the show hasn't had any impact on me at all.
